Quantities and sizes are limited for many of these species. There is no pre-ordering of plants. Plants were provided by Pinelands Nursery & Supply in Columbus, Fernbrook Nursery in Chesterfield and RareFind Nursery in Jackson. Many thanks to them for their support of this event! Scientific Name: Andropogon virginicus Common Name: Broomsedge Bluestem Container Size: 2" plug Price: $2.50 Description: Common species of dry, open sites. Like Little Bluestem, but leafier and stouter flowers tucked inside bracts. 2'-5' high. Upland, dry sites. Semi-shade. Attracts birds and butterflies. Flowers mid-august to late Sept. Scientific Name: Aronia arbutifolia Common Name: Red Chokeberry Container Size: #1 6-12" Price: $10 Description: Shrub with densely hairy lower leaf surfaces. Found in forested wetlands and shrub bogs. White to pink flowers on hairy stalks develop into 1/4" red fruits. 5'-10'. Lovely color all year round, attracts birds. Prefers wetter acidic soils and full sun. Scientific Name: Aronia melanocarpa Common Name: Black Chokeberry Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Shrub with smooth leaf surfaces. Found in forested wetlands and shrub bogs. White to pink flowers on smooth stalks develop into 1/4" black fruits. 5'-10' high. Can grow in wet or dry areas. Prefers partial shade. Flood tolerant. Scientific Name: Asclepias tuberosa Common Name: Butterfly Milkweed Container Size: 2" plug Price: $2.50 Description: A tough drought-tolerant native with intense orange flowers May - September. Attracts many varieties of butterfly and is especially attractive to Monarchs. Occurs in dry fields and roadsides. Prefers full sun but can grow in part shade. Maximum height 12"-18". Moist to dry soils. Scientific Name: Aster linariifolius Common Name: Flaxleaf Whitetop Aster Container Size: Quart Price: $12 Description: This herbaceous perennial is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well drained soils in full sun. Can grow in shade. Prefers acidic, sandy soils. Numerous short stems form a mound of flowers in colors ranging from deep lavender to pinks and white. Flowers Aug. to Oct. Grows in clumps 15"-20" tall. Long blooming aster that is a great cut flower.

Prefers moist, rich soil. Lavender, purple or blue flowers August - October. Pinching back the stems several times by mid-july will help control plant height, promote bushiness and relieve the need for staking. Attracts bees and butterflies. Somewhat drought tolerant. 3'-5' high. Scientific Name: Aster novi-belgii Common Name: New York Aster Container Size: 2" plug Price: $2.50 Description: Perennial with violet blue flower heads. To 5' high. Wetland species and prefers full sun. Attracts butterflies. Flowers early September to late October. Scientific Name: Aster spectabilis Common Name: Eastern Showy Aster Container Size: Quart Price: $12 Description: Perennial with open clusters of showy flower heads with bright lavender rays surrounding a yellow central disk. This very showy, large flowered, short-stemmed aster is easily cultivated and flowers August - October. Prefers dry clearings and sandy woods. Sun to partial shade. Scientific Name: Baptisia tinctoria Common Name: Wild Indigo Container Size: Quart Price: $6 Description: Multitudes of small, cheerful yellow pea-type flowers cover this bushy perennial from May - July. Tolerates drought and poor soils. Plants form slowly expanding clumps with deep and extensive root systems that should not be disturbed once established. Full sun, dry acidic soil. To 30". Scientific Name: Betula populifolia Common Name: Gray Birch Container Size: #2 /2-3' Price: $16 Description: Small, often multi-stemmed tree with white bark. Similar to Paper Birch but smaller with non-shredding bark. Leaves turn yellow in fall. 20'-40'. Attracts butterflies. Can grow in dry, damp or wet soils. Sun, partial shade or shade. Scientific Name: Cephalanthus occidentalis Common Name: Buttonbush Container Size: #1 6-12" Price: $10 Description: Medium-sized shrub often growing in 1 foot or more of water. Flowers early June to late August. Small white flowers cluster together forming "buttons". 3' to 6' can reach 15'. Grows best in partial shade can grow in full shade. Obligate wetland species. Scientific Name: Chrysopsis mariana Common Name: Maryland golden-aster Container Size: Quart Price: $16 Description: Sturdy perennial of pine woods and sandy areas. Clusters of bright yellow flowers about 2" wide appear Aug, Sept, Oct. Grows to 1' tall. Grows best in full sun. Very drought tolerant, likes sandy well-drained soils. Scientific Name: Clethra alnifolia Common Name: Sweet Pepperbush Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Medium size shrub of wetlands, swamps and sandy woods. Racemes of very fragrant, white flowers blossom July - August. 3'-8' or larger in moist soil. Prefers wet or moist acidic soil but can grow in dry soils. Sun, partial-shade, shade.

Fern-like leaves & stems have a distinct spicy odor. 2'-4' tall. Likes dry acidic soils and partial shade. Attracts birds and butterflies. Scientific Name: Cornus florida Common Name: Flowering Dogwood Container Size: # " Price: $16 Description: A small round-crowned, shade-tolerant tree that rarely exceeds 25' in height. Graceful, horizontal-tiered branching; red fruits; and long-lasting, showy, white and pink flowers March - May. Grows in moist to dry acidic soils and likes partial or full shade. Scientific Name: Eupatorium perfoliatum Common Name: Boneset Container Size: 2" plug Price: $2.50 Description: Flat-topped, coarse-leaved, perennial with abundant clusters of small ivory flowers, attracts butterflies. Found in low woods and wet meadows. Flowers late July to October. 2'-5' tall. Likes moist to wet soils and tolerates sun, partial shade and shade. Flowers July - September. 4'-6' tall. Prefers moist soil but can grow in dry areas. Sun, partial shade and full shade. Important source of honey - very attractive to pollinators. Scientific Name: Helianthus angustifolius Common Name: Swamp Sunflower Container Size: Quart Price: $16 Description: This herbaceous perennial has brilliant yellow flowers in late summer, early fall. Can grow to about 6' tall with stems that branch and flowers about 2" in size. Prefers moist, sandy, acidic soil but will thrive in well-drained soil if watered during dry spells. Does best in full sun but can grow in partial shade. Can tolerate waterlogged soils for extended periods of time. Nice ornamental plant for bog or pond area. Scientific Name: Heliopsis helianthoides Common Name: Smooth Oxeye/False Sunflower Container Size: Quart Price: $6 Description: Adaptable perennial of dry open sites. Showy golden flowers in summer. From 3'-4' tall. Likes sandy soil. Needs full sun and can tolerate moist to dry conditions. Scientific Name: Ilex glabra Common Name: Inkberry Holly Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Midsized evergreen, dioecious shrub of acidic soils. The only Ilex species to sucker. 6'-8' tall. Female plant makes shiny black berries. Semi-shade to shade. Prefers moisture but can tolerate dry conditions. Flowers mid- June to early July. Fruit mid-september to November. Scientific Name: Ilex verticillata Common Name: Winterberry Holly Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Medium size, deciduous multi-stemmed, dioecious shrub of swamps & forested wetlands. Bright red berries in fall & winter are good for wildlife food. Fruit mid-september to October. 6'-10' tall. Prefers wet conditions but can grow in dry conditions once established. Sun, partial shade and shade.

Will spread by self-seeding and extension of rhizomes. Scientific Name: Itea virginica Common Name: Virginia Sweetspire Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Small deciduous shrub of wet acidic sites. Very ornamental with fragrant white flowers in the late spring & lovely burgundy fall color. Flowers early June to July. 3'-6' tall but can reach 10'. Prefers medium to wet soils but can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Prefers partial shade but can be grown in full sun once established. Scientific Name: Kalmia angustifolia Common Name: Sheep Laurel Container Size: 8-12" Price: $15 Description: Perennial evergreen shrub from between 1 '- 3' tall. Has deep purple to red bell shaped flowers in June - July. Likes partial shade and prefers moist acidic soils. Can grow in dry soils once established. Scientific Name: Kalmia latifolia Common Name: Mountain Laurel Container Size: 12-18" Price: $15 Description: Perennial shrub from between 12'-20' tall. Evergreen with showy white to pink bell-shaped flowers appearing June - July. Likes moist acidic soils. Can grow in full sun to full shade but grows best in partial shade. Scientific Name: Kalmia latifolia "Olympic Fire" Common Name: Mountain Laurel Container Size: 15/18" Price: $18 Description: Perennial shrub from between 12'-20' tall. Evergreen with dark red buds and showy solid pink bellshaped flowers appearing June - July. Likes moist acidic soils and partial shade. Scientific Name: Kalmia latifolia 'Kaleidoscope' Common Name: Red & White Mountain Laurel Container Size: 15-18" Price: $18 Description: Perennial shrub that grows to 5' tall by 4 1/2' wide. Raspberry-red buds open to burgundy flowers with white edges appearing June - July. Likes moist acidic soils. Can grow in full sun to full shade but grows best in partial shade. Scientific Name: Liatris spicata Common Name: Dense Blazing Star Container Size: Quart Price: $6 Description: Slender, erect perennial that reaches a height of 3-4 ft. A dense spike of purple flowers appear July - Sept. Likes full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Grows best in moist, acidic sandy soil. Attractive to bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. Low maintenance plant that may be resistant to deer. Scientific Name: Lobelia cardinalis Common Name: Cardinal Flower Container Size: 2" plug Price: $2.50 Description: Pretty herb of wetlands with striking, bright red flowers & toothed alternate leaves. Flowers May - October. Attracts hummingbirds. To 5' tall. Needs wet or moist soil and likes sun, partial shade or shade. Scientific Name: Lupinus perennis Common Name: Sundial Lupine Container Size: Quart Price: $12 Description: Native perennial with clusers of purple pea-like flowers on 1-2 ft. stems. Flowers appear May - June and can be pink to white in color. A legume, this plant fixes nitrogen from the atmosphere. Flowers attact butterflies and hummingbirds. Can grow in full to partial sun, likes dry, well-drained, sandy soils.

Has yellow two-lipped flowers flowers flecked with purple. Long summer bloom period from April to August. To 2'. Requires some sun. Tends to self-seed. Deadhead flowers to prolong summer bloom. Attracts hummingbirds. Scientific Name: Myrica pensylvanica Common Name: Northern Bayberry Container Size: # " Price: $10 Description: Medium size, semi-evergreen shrub found on a variety of sites. Aromatic leaves and berries. Salt tolerant, good for coastal & highway plantings. A nitrogen fixer. 5'-12' tall. Prefers moist soils but is drought tolerant. Likes partial shade. Scientific Name: Nyssa sylvatica Common Name: Blackgum or Black Tupelo Container Size: 2 Price: $16 Description: Medium to large tree often found growing in forested wetlands and moist uplands. Scarlet fall color, one of the first species to turn color in the fall ' with horizontally spreading branches. Flowers appear May to June and are an excellent source of nectar for bees. Tolerates sun, partial shade and shade. Prefers moist, acidic soils. Difficult to transplant once established due to long taproot. A good erosion control plant, tolerant of salt spray. 2'-5' tall. Likes sunny, dry conditions but can grow in moist soil. Scientific Name: Panicum virgatum Common Name: Switchgrass Container Size: 1 Price: $9 Description: Very common bunch grass of medium to dry open sites. Attractive fall and winter color. To 6' tall. Scientific Name: Prunus serotina Common Name: Black Cherry Container Size: #2 2-3' Price: $16 Description: Medium size, craggy tree grows 50'-60' tall and can reach 100'. Cherries are an important food source for many animal species and appear late summer. Likes sun but can tolerate shade. Moist to dry soil conditions. Scientific Name: Rhododendron periclymenoides Common Name: Pinxterbloom/Pink Azalea Container Size: 15-18" Price: $18 Description: This deciduous shrub gets fragrant pink flowers in May just before the leaves are fully expanded. A plant for all season with attractive flowers, tasty fruit, scarlet fall foliage & red winter stem color. Fruits early July to early August. To 12' tall. Likes moist soils but with some irrigation can also be grown on drier sites. Sun, partial shade, shade. Scientific Name: Vernonia noveboracensis Common Name: New York Ironweed Container Size: 2" Plug Price: $2.50 Description: Tall clump-forming perennial, growing 5-8' in height. Small flower heads of deep reddish-purple appear August - September. Likes moist, acidic soils and full sun. Will flourish in regular or dry soil. Tolerates clay and acidic to neutral acidic conditions. Scientific Name: Woodwardia virginica Common Name: Virginia Chain Fern Container Size: Quart Price: $16 Description: Great fern for moist, shady sites. It will fill in quickly to form groundcover.
