2 Dear Member, Welcome to our seeds catalogue which gives information about the seeds we are selling in the trading shop for the 2019 growing season. The seeds are supplied by Johnsons and are on sale at 25% off the retail sales price. Johnsons was established in 1820 and provides a premium range of flower and vegetable packet seeds. 3 F L O W E R S ANTIRRHINUM CIRCUS CLOWNS Snapdragon A. majus Bright and cheerful bicolour snaps, just a little different! Bright and cheerful, bicolour snapdragons add that something a little different to borders and bedding. They are also good for cutting. Usually grown as an annual. Height: 45cm. Plant Class: Half-Hardy Perennial. AQUILEGIA BIEDERMEIER MIXED Columbine A. vulgaris Dainty, short spurred blooms for early border colour. Dainty, short spurred, double flowers in a riot of colours rise on short stems from attractively divided blue-green foliage. For mixed borders and containers. Height: 60cm. Plant Class: Hardy Perennial. ASTER COLOUR CARPET MIXED China Aster Callistephus chinensis Dwarf plants for late summer colour in beds and containers. Double flowers that smother the low-growing, compact plants in colour. A wonderful choice for late summer colour in containers and bedding displays. Height: 20cm. Plant Class: Half-Hardy Annual. AUBRIETIA LARGE FLOWERED MIXED A. x cultorum Spring colour for rockeries, walls and ground cover. On sunny days, the fragrant flowers can attract clouds of butterflies hence its name of butterfly bush, plus other valuable insects. A wildlife garden essential, tolerant of most conditions. Popular variety that produces a high yield of large heads with thick fleshy scales on relatively compact plants. The thistle-like blue heads also look attractive in the flower garden. AUBERGINE EARLY LONG PURPLE 2 Aubergine Solanum melongena Plenty of large, elongated fruits for greenhouse crops. A favourite ingredient of Mediterranean food and easy to grow in a greenhouse or large frame. Prolific, large elongated fruits up to 25cm (10in) long. BEETROOT BOLTARDY Beetroot Beta vulgaris A favourite bolt-resistant variety, ideal for early sowings. Very popular bolt-resistant variety ideal for early sowings. Producing excellent quality, globe-shaped beets with great flavour and fine texture. BEETROOT CYLINDRA Beetroot Beta vulgaris A popular variety for slicing, with well-flavoured, long roots. So easy to slice, the dark red, smooth-skinned, cylindrical roots grow to approx. 10cm (4in) long and have good internal colour. Has good bolt tolerance for a longer harvest season. 13

If grown under cloches to give a protected environment, they can be ready in as little as 95 days. Mildew resistant. BROCCOLI EARLY PURPLE SPROUTING Broccoli Brassica oleracea Italica Early, nutritious vegetable with delicious purple shoots. A very hardy, cold-tolerant and nutritious vegetable that produces heavy crops of succulent and delicious purple spears when little else is available in the garden. BRUSSELS SPROUT GREEN MARBLE F1 Brussels Sprout Brassica oleracea Gemmifera The ideal, high-yielding Christmas and winter sprout. Great variety for Christmas sprouts with high yields of smooth, dark-green buttons with an attractive lighter centre and good, traditional flavour. CABBAGE (SAVOY) VERTUS Brassica oleracea Capitata Very hardy, reliable, extra-late, green Savoy with good flavour. Extra-late cropping, green Savoy with crinkled leaves and firm, rounded heads. Very hardy and reliable variety that you can be harvesting for Christmas dinner. Stands well in the ground until required. 14

A reliable, fast-maturing, pointed summer cabbage with a small heart and few outer leaves. The compact heads have excellent flavour. CABBAGE LANGEDIJK 4 Brassica oleracea Capitata Great autumn winter variety, stores for weeks after cutting. Great late season variety for autumn and winter use, excellent for storing. The round, dark green, compact heads will keep for several months after cutting. CARROT FLYAWAY F1 Carrot Daucus carota Popular variety, specially bred to deter carrot root fly. Already an established favourite, this tasty, heavyyielding autumn king type is specially bred to deter carrot root fly. It has a small, central core with long, tapering roots. CARROT NANTES 5 Carrot Daucus carota A very early variety. Ideal for finger and full-size carrots. A vigorous, early variety with straight, cylindrical, bluntended roots and very little core. Strong tops make harvesting easier. 15

16 V E G E T A B L E S CARROT ROYAL CHANTENAY 3 Carrot Daucus carota Sweet and tender roots which can be cooked whole. A high-yielding, delicious, sweet and tender carrot. The conical roots can be grown at close spacing to use as whole baby carrots or left to mature. CAULIFLOWER ALL THE YEAR ROUND Brassica oleracea Botrytis Popular variety with large heads and good flavour. An established and popular garden variety that produces large, white heads over a long season. Ideal for successional sowing. CAULIFLOWER ROMANESCO PRECOCE Brassica oleracea Botrytis Unusual variety with a slightly nutty flavour. Sometimes referred to as broccoli, this unusual vegetable has a distinctive sweet nutty taste, widely favoured by restaurant chefs. CELERY TITUS Apium graveolens Fast growing, tasty stems that hold well in the ground. A high quality, UK-bred variety with great tasting, smooth green stems that have good resistance to disease and bolting for a longer harvest period. 16

Highly ornamental and decorative established variety with bright red stalks, perfect for the flower and vegetable garden. Pick regularly for a delicious addition to salads. COURGETTE ALL GREEN BUSH Courgette Cucurbita pepo Harvest as courgettes or as marrows, from compact plants. A versatile variety that yields dark green, tender fruits in abundance. Can be harvested as courgettes or left to develop into marrows. COURGETTE GOLD RUSH F1 Courgette Cucurbita pepo Thin-skinned fruits on compact, high-yielding plants. A gourmet treat with smooth, thin, yellow skins and crisp flesh. The compact plants yield prolifically and are ideal for smaller gardens or pots. CUCUMBER LA DIVA Cucumis sativus Sweet, all-female variety, can crop outdoors. Highly recommended for succulent and sweet cucumbers. An all-female variety, it has excellent cold tolerance making it suitable to grow outdoors. 17

A high-yielding, vigorous variety producing long, straight, dark green fruits, with smooth skin and crisp flesh. Suitable for growing in a greenhouse or cold frame. FENNEL (FLORENCE) CHIARINO Fennel Foeniculum vulgare Fast-maturing variety with large bulbs and a distinct flavour. A fast-maturing variety with large, dense, white bulbs with intense aniseed flavour that are delicious roasted or sliced thinly and used raw in salads. Use the young, ferny foliage in salads and as flavouring. GREEN MANURE AUTUMN MIX Green Manure An effective soil-improving mixture designed for autumn sowing. A great way to protect and improve your soil. A cover of green manure discourages the spread of weeds and helps prevent valuable nutrients leaching away over winter. Digging it in provides a wealth of important organic nutrients. Covers 20 m². KALE DWARF GREEN CURLED Kale Brassica oleracea Acephala Very hardy for nutritious greens all winter. Also known as Borecole, this is one of the hardiest vegetables and its tightly-curled leaves will produce nutritious greens throughout the winter. 18

This reliable, easy-to-grow variety is slow to bolt in hot, summer weather. LETTUCE LITTLE GEM Lactuca sativa A favourite, compact variety, known for its sweet flavour. A deservedly popular variety known for its sweet flavour and crunchy texture. A small semi-cos, it is ideal for growing where space is limited. LETTUCE MIXED SALAD LEAVES Lettuce Lactuca sativa Very easy to grow, pick leaves as you need them. Grow your own mixed lettuce salad with different leaf shapes, colours, textures and flavours. Individual leaves can be cut as required and more will grow in their place. LETTUCE RED & GREEN SALAD BOWL MIXED Lettuce Lactuca sativa Easy to grow for baby leaves. MARROW TIGER CROSS F1 Marrow Cucurbita pepo Prolific and early, resistant to Cucumber Mosaic Virus. Early maturing, hybrid bush variety with good resistance to Cucumber Mosaic Virus. Produces prolific crops of dark green fruits set off by pale green stripes. MIXED SPICY SALAD LEAVES Salad A perfect mixed salad with a bit of bite. Perfect for those who like a little bit of heat or bite to their salad. The different leaf shapes, textures and flavours provide a ready mixed salad, just pick the leaves! MUSTARD WHITE Salad Brassica sinapsis alba An easy-to-grow, traditional salad garnish. Versatile and easy to grow. A very popular bunching onion that produces long, straight stems that are very slow to bulb. Well flavoured and tender, they are ideal for salads or stir-fries. ONION (SPRING) WHITE LISBON WINTER HARDY Spring Onion Allium cepa A very hardy strain, to harvest through most of the year. A very hardy strain which is slow to form bulbs. Can be sown until September for use the following spring, but is also ideal for spring and summer sowing. ONION AILSA CRAIG Onion Allium cepa Large, globe-shaped variety with exhibition quality bulbs. Large, globe-shaped, straw-coloured bulbs with a mild flavour. A very popular variety for growing heavyweight exhibition quality onions. Will store for a few months. PAK CHOI CHOKO F1 Salad Brassica rapa Chinensis Mild flavour and great, crisp texture. Dark green leaves with tender, green stems are easy to grow as baby leaves for salad and mature plants. Fast growing, it can be used in many types of dish. 22

British bred, vigorous hybrid with long, wedge-shaped roots of exhibition quality. Shows good resistance to canker and has great flavour. Perfect for roasting. PARSNIP TENDER AND TRUE Parsnip Pastinaca sativa Long roots, ideal for exhibition, shows some canker resistance. Ideal for exhibitions and in the garden with long, smoothskinned roots. PEPPER HOT & SWEET COLLECTION Capsicum annuum Sweet and mild to fiery and hot.
