3 THE OHIO AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTER Northwest Branch, Custar, Ohio Department of Horticulture Mimeograph Series Noo 344 January 22, 1968 FIELD TOMATO VARIETY TRIALS 1967 Custar, Ohio WALTER No BROw~ * The 1967 field tomato variety trials included twentyfour varieties replicated five times (Table 1), and twentyfour varieties in single plots (Table 2)~ All vari ties reported herein were hand harvested for a total of three to five times~ CULTURAL INFORMATION Plants~ Greenhouse and framegrown, 70 per standard flat from seed sown April 11, for replicated varieties and April 13 for single plot~ Transplanted to Field~ June 6, with single row transplanter, using starter at rate of 6 lbs./ioo gals. of water, ~ pint/plante ertilizer~ on December 19, 1000 Ibs fa drilled on chopped corn stubble, and plowed Land disked, cultipacked and harrowed on June 5, 1967~ 1966~, Plot Size and Spacing~ Twenty plants per single row plot, spaced 2 feet in rows 5 feet apart~ Each plot consisted of an additional 20 plants used in the simulated machine harvest phase of the project~ Herbicide: Broadcast Amiben 10 granular at 40 Ibsc/A on July 1 after cultivating on June 30, 1967Q I June 9 July 17 July 27 August 5 ct and Disease Control~ The following schedule of materials was applied: DDT l#/a Manzate 3#/A + Malathion 1# Manzate 3#/A Manzate 3#/A + Dieldrin \# Aug~ 15 Manzate 3#/A + TDE l~# + Aldrin ~# Auge 25 Manzate 3#/A + TDE 1\# + Dieldrin ~# Sept~ 13 Copper 611A + Dieldrin ~# Weather Dala~ Although rainfall was near normal for April and May the distribution was such chat land could not be worked until May 23v Temperatures for June av raged 2~8 above normal but July, August and September were several degrees below normal. ~ light frost on September 5 burned some foliage, additional frosts on 6, 7 and 8th did not injure fruit se~iqu~ly. 4 vc f67, p. 2 HARVEST INFORMATION The first harvest was made on August 30 and the last on October 11. All fruits were graded on the basis of U,.S. NOfti 1, No.2 for defects, No.2 for color, and culls$ These grades are recorded as percentages of total weight for each individual harvest period for the seasonos yield. Each fruit was classified as to cracked or~bbt cracked, and the percentage of cracked fruit computed, with no attempt to classify the fruits as to the extent and kind of crackinge The yield and other data are recorded in Tables I and 2 according to~ Aug. 30 and Sept~ 8; Septe 20; Sept~ 28 and Oct 11; and for the entire five hand harvests.
