1 page 1 Cepa Gavilan, Ribera del Duero 2010 From the Pérez Pascuas brothers, the brains behind Viña Pedrosa, this supercharged Ribera red is 100% tempranillo (called tinto del país hereabouts) matured in French and American oak barrels for twelve months. Having started the estate in 1980, today they own 150 hectares of prime vineyards near the villages of Pedrosa de Duero and Roa, north of the river Duero in the province of Burgos. The secret behind the quality of the grapes is the high altitude (850 metres), which offsets the intense heat of this continental region, and the age of the vines (an average of 35 years). This results in grapes with incredibly intense flavours yet supported by fresh, natural acidity and fine, velvety tannins. The brothers are between 71 and 85 yearsof-age now and since 1989 Benjamin's son José Manuel Pérez Ovejas has been in charge of winemaking. They make several wines, starting with the classy Cepa Gavilàn for everyday drinking, right up to reserva and gran reserva wines which can age magnificently in bottle.

This is from a small estate in the highly regarded Pic Saint Loup, small enough to have been ignored by most writers. Pic Saint Loup is a district to the north of Montpellier and is dominated by an eerie, tooth-like peak. Cool breezes sweep down from the Massif Central and provide the perfect conditions for growing grapes. The syrah in particular thrives here and many producers are making wines of northern Rhône stature that are becoming fashionable and much sought after. Fabien Reboul of Château de Valflaunès makes several reds with different levels of complexity and concentration. This is his easiest to understand. 3 page 3 Producer : Château de Valflaunès Pic Saint Loup is a district to the north of Montpellier and is dominated by an eerie, tooth-like peak. Cool breezes sweep down from the Massif Central and provide the perfect conditions for growing grapes. The syrah in particular thrives here and many producers are making wines of northern Rhône stature that are becoming fashionable and much sought after This is a small estate with cellars beneath the old chateau in the village of Valflaunes. The winemaker is Fabien Reboul with the looks and physique of a rock musician. Over the years his style of winemaking has changed from big, heavy wines to wines that have more freshness. 'I simply got tired of my own wines,' he used to say. The first wine to change was the white made from marsanne and roussanne grapes. The grapes are still picked perfectly ripe and yields remain low. Indeed his vineyards on poor soil couldn't produce much more. The real difference is in the winemaking. Only stainless steel tanks are used with little in the way of intervention. Bottling is early to preserve fruit flavours.

5 page 5 Producer : Château Sainte-Eulalie Château Sainte-Eulalie is an outstanding estate run by a young and enthusiastic couple, Laurent and Isabelle Coustal. The domaine was first established in the earlier part of the 20th century, but it has been since this dynamic pair took over in 1996 that it has gained its excellent status. The property is known as a campagne meaning that the vineyards, winery, main house, workers lodgings, and cellar are all located on one site and Isabelle and Laurent have worked hard to revitalise the entire complex. Sainte-Eulalie lies in the heart of the Minervois appellation in the south of France, just above the tiny village of La Livinière. The vineyards are spread over the Aude Valley, on the south side of the Black Mountain and Massif Central and not far from the Canal du Midi. This area isn t just an idyllic, laid-back sun-trap, it s also brilliant for vines: Eulalie s terraced vineyards lie on south-facing slopes at between m altitude, where they are protected from the northern winds. The 34 hectares of vines planted on pebbly soils with a high proportion of chalk, clay and manganese are mostly over 20 years old, with the exception of two hectares of syrah planted by the Coustals in The balance of vines comprises 36% syrah, 28% grenache noir, 27% carignan and 9% cinsault. Machine harvesting is responsible for most of the picking, but once the grapes reach the winery they are sorted by hand to ensure only the best fruit is used. Grapes then undergo fermentation and are aged in a mixture of vessels. The everyday Minervois spends months in traditional concrete tanks, whereas the premium bottling, Cuvée Cantilène, which comes from old vines and contains more syrah, ages for a year in barrels, 25-50% of which are new oak, depending on vintage conditions. The rosé is much fresher, containing more grapes from the younger syrah vines, and is designed for younger drinking with fresh summer fare.

This unusual mix of grapes, created by The Society's Toby Morrhall and winemaker Cristobal Undurraga, is deep, dark and sensuous with rich fruit and perfectly judged ripe tannins. 7 page 7 Producer : Viña Koyle Koyle is the new project of the Undurraga family (Max, accounts, Alfonso, sales and Cristobal, viticulture and winemaking), who have sold the company that bears their name and bought a lovely estate near Los Lingues, called Viña Koyle, in Alto Colchagua to make, principally, fine red wines. They planted 50 ha in 2006/7 (cabernet sauvignon, carmenère, syrah, malbec, petit verdot, mourvèdre, tempranillo) and a further 30 ha in 2010 (cabernet franc, merlot, carignan, grenache, sangiovese and petit syrah) totalling thirteen varieties. The vineyards are at the base of some hills at m altitude in quite a windy situation, particularly in summer, where the maximum average temperature in the hottest month is about 26ºC. Annual rainfall is between mm and may allow some vineyard blocks to be dry farmed once the young vines have established deep roots. The soil is red clay over friable granite soils. The vineyard faces north-west and is divided into three terraces. The bottom terrace has more clay and alluvial soils, while the middle and upper ones have decreasing proportions of clay and increasing amounts of stones and friable granite. The altitude gives a 2ºC difference in temperature. The vineyard is currently undergoing a transformation to biodynamic viticulture. There is huge potential to make lovely wines here; Cristobal, who lives in a house built on the property, has a real feeling for vineyards and viticulture and is also a very experienced winemaker, having worked in Australia at Rosemount with Phillip Shaw, in Bordeaux at Château Margaux with Paul Pontallier and in Mendoza for Kaiken with Aurelio Montes. The early stars have been carmenère and mourvèdre. One can sense great quality potential here.

9 page 9 Producer : Bleasdale Vineyards The historic Bleasdale vineyards were founded in 1850 by Frank Potts, who arrived in South Australia from Portsmouth, England in Potts spotted the potential of the rich alluvial soils of the area and the impact of the Bremer River on which the isolated, tiny town of Langhorne Creek region depends for flood irrigation. His sons and grandsons operated and built up the winery, and even today the fourth and fifth generation of the Potts family are still involved in the winemaking and running of the winery. Their property, much of which enjoys conservation status, offers a fascinating insight into the history of Australia s early settlers. The cellars at Bleasdale are a national monument, constructed from red gumwood and limestone, and some of the original winemaking equipment is still occasionally used. Nevertheless, the emphasis here is on using modern technology to produce wines of consistently high quality. Until the 1990s much of the region s fruit went into multiregional blends and it was only when a group of long-term family growers including Bleasdale started promoting 100% Langhorne Creek wines that the region became recognised in its own right. We are proud that The Society s Spicy Australian Red, a robust and generous blend, true to the Bleasdale spirit, originates from these family vineyards.

Burge was no novice, having been an experienced industry veteran with other companies before taking on his own venture, and was also the fifth generation of a winemaking family that had originally emigrated to Australia from Wiltshire in Since the mid-2000s, he and his wife Helen have also welcomed their three children the sixth generation to the team. Burge now has extensive holdings in the rich, red-brown soils of the Barossa valley including some of the finest and oldest shiraz vineyards as well as other sites further afield. From these plots come a number of single vineyard wines, as well as the fruit for his whole range of cuvées, which are predominantly red. His most renowned wine, and one of Barossa s most powerful and long-lived, is Meshach Shiraz, named after Grant s great-great-grandfather and produced from 70-year old vines. Benchmark is a delicious entry-level shiraz made to enjoy when young and vibrant. The Filsell Old Vine Shiraz, from the eponymous vineyard, is an award-winning wine of marvellous concentration from very old vines.

11 page 11 Fitou, Château de la Grange 2011 Full-flavoured Languedoc red with ripe carignan an important feature in the blend. It is a wild and sparsely populated place where the local wine is much appreciated with hearty dishes fit for mountain living. Fitou was the first area of the Languedoc to be granted appellation status for red table wines. It gained huge popularity in the 1970s and then suffered a slow decline as a result of over selling. The Dell Ova family own this 65-hectare estate close to the sea at La Palme, an arid, windy stretch of land that can be flecked with sea spray when conditions are right, and Thierry and André Dell Ova have achieved organic certification in recent years. From their plantings of grenache, mourvèdre, syrah, carignan and muscat blanc à petits grains they produce several wines as well as the Fitou, including Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes.
