PRESS KIT LUNGAROTTI GROUP
LUNGAROTTI GROUP It all began with Rubesco, the iconic label of the Cantine Lungarotti winery, whose name derives from the Latin rubescere, to blush. Today the Umbrian group, guided by Chiara Lungarotti (C.E.O.) and her sister Teresa Severini, produces 2.5 million bottles each year of 27 different wines exported to 50 countries worldwide from 250 hectares of vineyards (between the Torgiano and Montefalco estates), with an overall turnover of 10.3 million Euros. With these figures Cantine Lungarotti can be considered a true testimonial for the Umbrian land, thanks to their integrated promotional system, of which they were forerunners, and a complete production cycle including agricultural exploitation (olive oil and balsamic condiment) but above all, unique cultural and tourist activities. A case in point is the Lungarotti Foundation directed by the founder s wife, Maria Grazia, who founded the Lungarotti Wine Museum (MUVIT) of Torgiano (Perugia), the best in Italy (source: New York Times) and the Olive and Oil Museum (MOO). Hospitality is represented by Poggio alle Vigne Agritourism: 10 independent apartments and 2 independent homes with pool, set among the Rubesco vineyards. A technical pit-stop is currently under way for Le Tre Vaselle Wine Resort which after 39 years of operations is currently undergoing renovations and will re-open in mid-march 2018 in time for its 40 th anniversary. Among the founding and innate values of the Lungarotti Group (about 100 employees) are the constant quest for quality, combined with sustainability from the vineyards to the cellars, including projects for compensating and reducing the C02 emissions produced and organic certification for the vineyards and winery in Turrita di Montefalco. LUNGAROTTI WINERY The Lungarotti winery has its productive and historical headquarters in Torgiano where its iconic wines are produced from the 230 hectares of vineyards owned by the family: the foremost is undoubtedly Rubesco Rosso di Torgiano DOC which has been epitomizing Umbria s winemaking excellence for more than 50 years in Italy and worldwide. Its ruby red colour evokes the origins of its name: Rubesco, from the Latin verb rubescere, to blush. With its average annual production of 500,000 bottles, Rubesco, Rosso di Torgiano DOC, is Lungarotti s most distributed wine, with its unmistakable label that depicts a bas-relief of the harvest represented on the Fontana Maggiore in Perugia, one of Italy s most beautiful 13 th century monumental fountains. From the DOC to the DOCG wine, with Rubesco Riserva, Vigna Monticchio Torgiano Rosso: the 2011 harvest is once again in this year s top ten by Gentleman, the magazine by Class Editori (Milano Finanza) which has surveyed the ratings of Italy's six most authoritative wine guides (Gambero Rosso, Bibenda, Daniele Cernilli, Veronelli, Vitae and Luca Maroni) to compile the new Top 100 for A wine that is enjoyed in 45 countries world-wide, this premium version of Rubesco undergoes an aging period of about 5 years, with average production of about 50,000 bottles. Great ratings have also been given to the 2012 harvest in the major 2018 wine guides: Tre Bicchieri in Gambero Rosso; 4 vines attributed by Vitae (Italian Sommelier Association); ; 96 points in The Ultimate Guide to Italian Wine by Doctor Wine (Daniele Cernilli); the Three Super Stars in Veronelli s Guida Oro; 5 Bunches in the Bibenda guide; 98 points for the Luca Maroni 2018 wine guide; the Crown in Vinibuoni d Italia by Touring Club; and inclusion in the list of the 100 wines to drink now in the Vini d Italia guide by L Espresso.
Another historic Lungarotti wine hails from the Torgiano estate: the white Torre di Giano, Bianco di Torgiano DOC. With 300,000 bottles (average annual production) Torre di Giano is fresh and fruity, produced exclusively with free-run juice. Lungarotti was also one of the pioneers of barriquefermented and -aged whites; indeed, as early as the 1970 s they have been producing Torre di Giano Vigna Il Pino, Bianco di Torgiano DOC (20,000 bottles annually). Developed for a young market and for all seasons, Brezza is a fresh and easy-to-enjoy wine perfect for relaxing moments, also available in the rosé and red versions. Among the latest additions to the lineup are L U Bianco (Umbria Bianco Igt - Vermentino and Chardonnay) and L U Rosso (Umbria Rosso Igt - Sangiovese, Merlot and other local red varietals harvested in September-October), two modern wines that are also suitable for young wine-lovers. In Turrita di Montefalco, headquarters of Lungarotti s second winery, are more than 20 hectares of vineyards which in 2014, along with the winery, obtained organic certification. This is the vineyard which produces Lungarotti s new entry for The wine, called ILBIO, is the first Lungarotti red wine from organically grown grapes to be releasedo the Italian market (launch during Vinitaly). A medium-bodied red wine for medium to long aging, ILBIO (Umbria Rosso IGT 2015) is fermented in stainless steel for 25 days with skin contact, then aged 10 months in casks of 30 Hl, followed by 6 months in bottle. The colour is intense and brilliant ruby red, while the flavor is elegant with lovely notes of red fruit and a balsamic touch and an aging potential of even more than 10 years. The label depicts the land registry map of the Montefalco Estate. In the past, land registry maps used to list the principal elements of each farm (number of inhabitants and workers, crops, yields, etc.), so in a similar fashion we list the main characteristics of both the vineyard where we organically grow the grapes, as well as of the wine itself. Among the other top wines produced at Turrita di Montefalco: Montefalco Rosso DOC; Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, a wine with great character and noteworthy drinkability produced exclusively with Sagrantino grapes (one of Umbria s historic native varietals whose richness in polyphenols is one of the highest in the world) and Sagrantino Passito DOCG. Technical sheets on All of Lungarotti s top wines can be found on the wine lists of the world s best dining establishments: from the Bulgari restaurant and Nobu in Tokyo to Pelago in Chicago and Campagnolo in Toronto; from Enoteca Il Buco in New York to Grill Royal in Berlin and Gallo Nero in Hamburg. Among the hotel placements: the Four Seasons hotel in Bangkok, Grand Hyatt in Seoul, up to the exclusive Gora Gadan in the national park of Hakone (Japan). Lungarotti wines are also found in all the Eataly stores both in Italy and abroad (New York, Chicago, Sao Paolo, Copenhagen, Istanbul, Munich and Moscow).
NOT ONLY WINE Olive Oil. With its 12 hectares of olive groves, in 2016 Lungarotti produced about 20,000 bottles of extra virgin olive oil between Dop Umbria Colli Martani and Cantico Extra Virgin Olive Oil). Balsamic Grape Condiment. Each year 2,000 cruets are produced in the balsamic condiment cellar in Torgiano. A gourmet product originating from white grape must (Trebbiano and Grechetto) simmered in a bain marie and aged for over 10 years in casks of decreasing size made of 7 different types of wood (oak, chestnut, cherry, ash, acacia, mulberry and juniper) according to the traditional method for balsamic vinegar. Its origin from grape must differentiates it from the traditional condiments based on wine vinegar. Grappa s. Grappa di Sagrantino, barrique aged and Grappa Rubesco, a young grappa. CULTURE: LUNGAROTTI FOUNDATION The cultural fulcrum of the Lungarotti group, that for 30 years has been at the centre of promoting the arts, knowledge and craftsmanship, is the Lungarotti Foundation, a non-profit organization created in 1987 by Giorgio and Maria Grazia Lungarotti. Directed by Maria Grazia Marchetti Lungarotti, art historian and archivist, the Foundation boasts a busy agenda of conferences, meetings and theme-based workshops and has published various works, recipients of prestigious, even international, awards. Among its activities is also the management of Lungarotti s two major exhibition spaces in Torgiano, the Wine Museum and the Olive and Oil Museum. With a collection of more than 3,000 works, the Lungarotti Wine Museum (MUVIT) tells the story of viticulture in the Mediterranean in an unprecedented manner. Reviewed as the best in Italy by the New York Times, the Museum is a journey over five thousand years through collections of wine vessels, cups, jugs, amphoras, a noteworthy collection of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque ceramics up to the contemporary period, as well as ethnographic collections. The Museum headquarters located in Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni also house one of the largest collections in Europe of engravings on a Bacchic theme, among which is an inebriating Bacchanal by Pablo Picasso (1959), and of antique wafer irons. The museum also displays vinification equipment, including the monumental press described by Caton and used in the Umbrian countryside until just a few decades ago. Opened to the public in 1974, the Museum celebrated its 40th anniversary with special events and initiatives, including a Limited, Muvit edition wine label depicting one of its iconic pieces, the Plate with Satyr by Jean Cocteau, enamel on terracotta. (Paris, 1958). The 600-plus pieces on display at the Lungarotti Olive and Oil Museum (MOO) highlight two universal symbols of Mediterranean culture. A precious product that has also been defined as green gold and a constant presence in the history of man from antiquity to today: from medicine to commerce, from the worship of gods to cosmetology which in the 17 th century considered it as the major ingredient in the recipe for the elixir of long life. Among the works on display: millstones, containers, cruets and an extraordinary collection of oil lamps that demonstrate oil s original use as a source of light. In addition, notebooks, sketches, travel kits and watercolour paintings from the accounts of intellectuals travelling on the Grand tour, who were fascinated by the landscapes of olive groves and vineyards found in this part of Italy.
HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM Hospitality and tourism complete the activities of the Lungarotti Group, one of the first Italian companies to practice a system of integrated and coordinated promotion of their local area. Le Tre Vaselle (Torgiano PG) From late 2016, after 39 years of operations, the 5-star wine resort is now under renovations. L U Winebar. The venue created within the old ceramics kiln of Torgiano in the historical center.
