ESG Day Ukraine 9 th November 2013 Hello everyone! ESG Day is coming soon and we will celebrate this pretty interesting event on Saturday November 9 th. So, take your group and have fun with the Ukrainian Scout programme. It is made for approx 2 hours for any part of the day. But you can use just parts of it and make it suitable for your group. This programme is prepared by YMCA Ukraine Scouts and shared with all scout across the Europe. If you have spent a good time in this day we would be glad to receive the postcards with your feedback to the following address. Viktor Melnyk YMCA Ukraine 13 Kikvidze Str., office 43 Kyiv, 01103, Ukraine Have you ever heard something from the ESG? It's a programme group from YMCA Europe and it stands for European Scouting and Jungschar Group. Every year we have a seminar and leadership training for leaders somewhere in Europe. This year you could meet during the YMCA Prague Festival on the festival area. For more information about YMCA Ukraine you are welcome to visit official web-site: http://ymca.org.ua/en/. There you will be able to find information about all activities and programs of YMCA Ukraine. So, are you ready for ESG Day in Ukrainian style? Devotion Let s start from short Devotion as it customary in YMCA Ukraine. And for Devotion we would like to talk one story called Time. Let s listen Imagine there is a bank that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course! Each of us has such a bank. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." You must live in the present on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and success! The clock is running.
Make the most of today. To realize the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who failed a grade. To realize the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To realize the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly newspaper. To realize the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to meet. To realize the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the train. To realize the value of ONE-SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an accident. Treasure every moment that you have! And treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time. Remember that time waits for no one. Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is mystery. Today is a gift. That's why it's called the present! Games After this spiritual action we are ready for some funny games, hopefully. You are able to play two kinds of games: indoor (Bizz Buzz) and outdoor (Stalker). So, let s start to play! Bizz Buzz Notes: Improve mental quickness and concentration. Good for filler while sitting around. Group sits in circle facing in. In a clock-wise direction, scouts count up from 1. Instead of 7 and all multiples of 7, and all numbers that contain 7, say 'Buzz'. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Buzz, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, Buzz, 15, 16, Buzz, 18,... If there is a mistake, start over at 1 with the next scout in line. Once it is going well and the group has reached 50 or so, stop them and add 'Bizz' to the game. Now, substitute 'Bizz' for 5. For example, 1, 2, 3, 4, Bizz, 6, Buzz, 8, 9, Bizz, 11, 12, 13, Buzz, Bizz, 16, Buzz, 18, 19, Bizz, Buzz, 22,... If the number is a multiple of 5 and 7, or has 5 and 7 in it, like 35 or 57 or 70 or 75, say 'Bizz Buzz'! Try for a group record or reaching 100. Eliminate scouts that make mistakes until only the champion is left. Stalking Notes: Best played in a well-wooded area. Playing at dusk gives the stalkers a better chance. One scout is the 'deer' and goes out into the play area. After 1 minute, all other scouts begin stalking the deer. If the deer sees a stalker but can not recognize him, the deer may bolt in the opposite direction 5 steps. If the deer sees a stalker and identifies him by name, the stalker must stand up and move at least 50 feet away from his last position. After a set time limit of 5-10 minutes, blow a whistle to signal the end of the game. All stalkers stand up and the patrol with the closest stalker gets 10 points, next closest stalker gets 7 points, and 3rd closest gets 5 points.
Cooking So, obviously we have spent a lot of energy for the games and need to replenish our physical energy. Thus, we are going to cook some kinds of common Ukrainian dishes. We would like to represent two dishes you can choose. Ukrainian Borsch Preparation time: 30 mins Cook time: 30 mins Total time: 1 hr Skill level: Medium Cost to make: $6-$7 Serving: 10 Ingredients: 2 large or 3 medium potatoes, sliced into bite-sized pieces ½ head of cabbage, thinly chopped 2 large or 3 medium beets, washed and peeled 1 bell pepper (optional) 1 medium onion, finely chopped 2 carrots, grated 4 Tbsp oil 5 Tbsp ketchup 2 bay leaves 2 Tbsp Organic Better Than Bouillon Chicken Base Paste 4 Tbsp lemon juice ¼ tsp freshly ground pepper 1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp chopped dill 1 can white beans with their juice 1. On the fine mandolin slicer, cut your peeled beets into matchsticks. Grate carrots and finely dice onions. Finely slice bell peppers if you are using them (optional). 2. Slice potatoes in ¼ thick pieces and finely slice ½ head of cabbage. 3. Fill a large soup pot with 16 cups of water and bring to a boil. Add potatoes and cook 15-20 minutes or until potatoes are almost cooked. 4. When the potatoes are almost cooked and you can smoothly pierce them with a butter knife, add cabbage and continue to cook 5 minutes. 5. While potatoes are cooking, heat a large skillet over medium/high heat. Add 4 Tbsp olive oil. Sautée your beets, carrots, onions and bell pepper (optional). Sauté until vegetables are soft (10-15 minutes). Stir in 5 Tbsp ketchup when veggies are almost done cooking. Add sauteed veggies to the soup pot. 6. Add 2 Tbsp of Bouillon paste, 4 Tbsp of lemon juice, ¼ tsp ground pepper, 1 tsp of salt, 2 bay leaves, 2 Tbsp of chopped fresh dill and can of white beans (with their juice) to the pot. 7. Cook another 5 minutes, or until the cabbage is very soft and well cooked.
Ukrainian Potato Pancakes (Deruny) Preparation time: 15 mins Cook time: 8 mins Total time: 23 mins Skill level: Easy Cost to make: $3 Serving: 6-8 Ingredients: 5 medium size potatoes (about 1.5 lb) 1 onion 1 egg 3 tbsp of all purpose flour 1 tbsp of sour cream 1 tsp of salt and pepper to taste Vegetable oil Instructions 1. Peel potatoes and onion: 2. Take big bowl, grate potatoes and onion (on the star shaped grater), taking turns and mixing grated mixture. Onion juice will keep potatoes from browning. 3. Add flour, egg, sour cream and mix it well, then add 1 tsp of salt and some black pepper, batter should be still liquid enough so you can easily ladle it. 4. Warm up a skillet with 2-3 tbsp of vegetable oil over medium/high heat. Add 1 heaping Tbsp of mixture at a time to the skillet fry on one side until golden brown in color, then flip to other side and fry for the same amount of time.
