Blue Lias Inn Stockton Road, Stockton, Southam, Warwickshire, CV47 8LD Telephone: 01926 812249 Email: jane@bluelias.com www.bluelias.com The Blue Lias Inn stands alongside the Grand Union Canal which is the main London to Birmingham waterway. It first became an Inn when the early canal travellers stopped for evening refreshment and overnight stabling for their horses. The Inn was originally an 18 th century farmhouse, which is also famous for its ghost of a ginger haired farmhand. The young boy was shot by the peg-legged farmer who, on returning from market, found him in a torrid liaison with his young wife. The ghost of the farmhand has often been seen during the winter months, together with the sound of the enraged farmer clonk-clonking his way across the floorboards still looking for the lost spirit of the amorous lad. The Blue Lias Inn is named after the limestone clay, which is quarried locally. The limestone is ground down and mixed with liquid chalk and sand which form the basic ingredients in the production of cement. The Brontosaurus on the Inn s signpost is a reminder of the times when dinosaurs roamed this area; their fossilised remains having been found in the Blue Lias limestone. A piece of Blue Lias complete with fossils can be seen in the pub s fireplace.
