Co-op Cooks & Co... 2 3 4 5 6 7 GoingAll In Keeping the family fam business in the family In 1979, membe John Mast, his wife Mahala and thei six childen moved to Cossville, Tennessee. They added thee moe childen to the fold and in 1985 they puchased a daiy to keep thei five boys busy. Son Tim has been involved on the fam since he was 11 yeas old, with the exception of a few yeas away teaching in a voluntay sevice pogam. In 2014, John and Tim welcomed son-in-law Mac Mille to the opeation. Mac bought a stong backgound in daiy poduction and a keen inteest in bottling milk to the family business. The eal hudle they faced was how to make the business wok. We e not in a daiy aea, and we didn t see an 80- cow daiy suppoting thee families. Instead of adding moe cows and poducing moe milk, we decided to see if we could get moe fo the milk that we wee aleady poducing, says Tim. I always thought ou aea deseved to have a poduct like ou own milk that is poduced locally, says 75-yea-old John. Moe and moe people want to know whee thei food comes fom. It was eithe go all in o add cows, adds Tim. All in they went, and what once had been a bight idea became a eality with the opening of Sunise Daiy, a full-sevice John Mast, Sunise Daiy patiach bottling facility, in Januay 2016. The Masts had bought a complete bottling system fom anothe Mennonite family exiting the business. John, Tim and Mac set it up just a half mile down the oad fom the fam, in what had been an old county stoe and deli. They tansfomed the space into thei own fam stoe whee they sell a nonhomogenized whole, 2-pecent, fat-fee, chocolate and stawbey milks, ice ceam, butte and meats. Some 18 months late, the family pocesses about 1,000 gallons each week, plus they un 150 gallons of ice ceam mix when needed. In thei pusuit of offeing the most fesh and natual poduct, the Masts have embaced a pocessing appoach that esults in a ich, flavoful taste. The pocedue stats on the fam with thei 80 Holsteins that ae milked twice-a-day in a doublesix heingbone palo. The Masts have always paid close attention to thei on-fam aw milk quality. They have thee plaques, making nealy 18 yeas of annual quality awads fom Mayland & Viginia. Tim utilizes DHIA testing and individual cow samples to monito milk quality. He aims fo somatic cell counts at 150,000 o bette, and he likes his peliminay incubation count 2,000 o less. The two tactics he cedits fo keeping down PI counts ae pesonally making sue soap is in the tank washe befoe it uns, and that evey week the fesh cow bucket milke is sanitized with soap and acid. WHETHER IT S YOUR REPRESENTATIVE OR A STAFFER TALKING TO SOMEBODY IS BETTER THAN TALKING TO NOBODY. Diving west on Route 28 in nothen Viginia, between Manassas and Culpeppe, you pass a handful of daiy fams amongst a sea of sububan planned communities. One of those fams is O.B. Messick and Sons, Inc., whose signs pomise fesh vegetables and fam-made fozen custad, enticing taveles to stop fo a visit. Bothes Ronnie and Jimmy ae the fouth geneation to fam 1,000 aces of land and manage a hed of moe than 350 head of daiy cattle. The Messick family has seen histoy unfold aound them. A numbe of gave stones pay espect to the fallen Civil Wa soldies that once mached acoss the family s fields. A small site of late 19th centuy gavestones ae fenced fo pesevation nea the fam s stawbey patch. Evey yea on the Fouth of July, the Messicks oll out fou antique cannons, and even fie a few. Ronnie Messick takes meticulous cae of his fathe s collection, thee fom the Civil Wa ea and one that pe-dates the Civil Wa. Since they do not use cannon balls when fiing, the Messicks use an old tick of mixing one pound of gunpowde to one pound of flou, which allows the flou to ignite and the gunpowde to explode fo a booming effect. The cannons ae authentic weapons; each with a stoy that Ronnie Messick is poud to shae. The 12-pound Mountain Howitze is light and disassembles so that it could be caied in pieces by mules and used in gueilla wafae engagements. The oldest elic in thei collection, an 1838 Heavy 12-pound Gaison Gun, was meant to be used in fotifications as a defensive weapon. At the end of the day s celebations, the cannons ae olled back to thei special shed and peseved fo the next yea. Ronnie evees thei value as family heilooms and pieces of Ameicana. We all know that quote, if you ignoe histoy you ae doomed to epeat it, he said We need to keep emembeing ou histoy. The Messicks hang thei hat on poducing 3,500 gallons of milk evey day. Due to the poximity to Washington, D.C, the fam faces heavy taffic coidos and pessues fom gowing housing development. The family is no stange to the challenges of the spawling Distict sububs, to which they ve met with innovation and inspiation. The newest poject is Messick s Fam Maket, a fully family-owned stoefont dedicated to poviding feshly picked, healthy, local foods at fai pices. This time of yea, ows of glistening dak beies and dating insects fill the fields, inviting customes to patake in the pick-you-own poduce expeience. Thee ae kid-fiendly distactions including a kangaoo bounce, goats, mist station and tacto ties to climb. The maket stoe is filled with eveything fom fam meats and dy goods to Messick s own jams, vegetables, hebs and cut flowes. Amanda Messick, Ronnie s youngest daughte, vivaciously talks about the new pojects and shaing the fam s stoy with visitos and neighbos. We stated the Fam Maket out of a shed fou yeas ago, and it has not been an easy tansition to make this offshoot a eality, she said. Howeve, they ae poud to be employing 25 people in the community and using good business pactices that ae yielding esults. Mayland & Viginia ecently nominated the Messick's fo a national sustainability awad fo thei faming pactices that include composting and soil and wate consevation. Though thei composting, the family has significantly educed the amount of nutients used on the fam. They have also pemanently potected moe than 700 aces by placing a famland pesevation easement on thei fam, leveaging the dollas fom the easement to einvest back into thei opeations. By installing watees, fencing out steams and using agonomic pactices, such as no-till to potect topsoil, they potect thei local wateways. The family s deep ties to thei community dives thei passion to continue seving Fauquie County and thei hometown of Bealteton with thei daiy fam, pick-you-own fuit, composting opeation and fam maket. We have histoy in these fields the milk, the food, the land it makes me poud evey day, said Amanda. I am poud to be a daiy fame - it keeps pushing me to get moe involved in what we do.
