More than just a meal About us Hertfordshire Independent Living Service (HILS) is a charitable, not for profit, social enterprise that operates from four sites across the county, 365 days a year. We deliver 500,000 meals, and our vehicles travel the equivalent of the distance to the moon and back, each year. Our charitable purpose is to help older and vulnerable people in our community live happy, healthy, and independent lives in their own homes. We support thousands of people in Hertfordshire, and ensuring our clients wellbeing and safety is our priority. Who delivers your meals? Meals are delivered by our dedicated and caring Community Team delivery drivers between 11:30am and 2pm every day. All of our staff have police checks, are regularly trained in supporting older people and those living with dementia, as well as being trained in food safety and nutrition. All of our staff are paid at least the Living Wage. How do we support our clients at home? We work closely with the Fire & Rescue Service, Police, and Trading Standards, who occasionally come out with our Community Team delivery drivers on their rounds to make sure our clients are safe and secure. We also have a no reply procedure in place to ensure that if a client does not answer the door, we follow up to make sure that every client is safe. We also work closely with other organisations, such as Age UK Hertfordshire, Carers in Herts, Herts Careline, HertsHelp, and Small Acts of Kindness to ensure our clients are safe and well. Our Community Team members will carry out welfare checks to ensure our clients wellbeing, such as checking they are drinking enough in hot weather and that they are keeping warm in winter. We will plate or cut up meals if required, and will get our clients a drink if they would like one. Contacting us? Our sites are open from 8am until 3.30pm, 7 days a week. You can call or email our friendly team to change or cancel your meals. Out of hours, you can also leave a message on our answering machine which is checked every morning.
