2 Coming's Microwave Formula It happens too often. Mealtime sneaks up on you during a busy day and, suddenly, you've got too much work and too little time. Well, when this happens to me, I rely on this handy magic formula: CORNING + Microwave = Timesavings It really works... whether for a whole meal in the microwave or for selected prepwork shortcuts like melting things or heating an accompanying vegetable for a conventionally cooked meal. With the variety of shapes and sizes in PYREX and in Photo - George M. Cochran CORNING WARE pieces, I know I'll have the right dish to fit the recipe and one I can use in any oven at all. And, if I want to saute something on the rangetop and then speed-cook it in the microwave or microwave it and then run the food under the broiler to brown I reach for a CORNING WARE piece. You just can't beat Corning for versatility. And Corning has another magic formula for getting crispy, browned foods from your microwave oven. It's super simple: CORNING Microwave Browners. There are several to choose from, and they're great at turning out perfect (and perfect-looking) "grilled" chops and burgers, toasted sandwiches, stir-fried vegetables, or even a frozen pizza all at microwave speed. Why is all this true? Because the glass and glass-ceramic materials Corning uses in making PYREX and CORNING WARE products have two big things going for them when used in the microwave. First, they're transparent to microwaves, so just about all of the oven's energy is used to heat the food. Second, they won't transfer heat away from the cooked food. That means cooked food stays warm longer. That's a specially good advantage with microwave recipes that call for "standing time." Speaking of time, I've taken enough of yours. To make up for it, this book is loaded with recipes based on that magic formula: CORNING + Microwave =Timesaving. Try them and prove it to yourself. 3 Microwave Browning Skillets You can't use Grandma's cast-iron skillet in the microwave oven. But microwave oven owners can still get that golden brown look and texture in microwave meals. CORNING WARE Microwave Browners put the "crunch" in your microwave cooking! Now you can enjoy golden grilled sandwiches, sunny eggs and omelets, crunchy chicken and fish even stir-fried vegetables and French toast all from your microwave oven. Even Grandma would be pleased at how fast "crisp" can be! A CORNING WARE Microwave Browner does this because it has a special coating on the outside bottom. The coating gets very hot when preheated and that heat is transferred to the inner cooking surface. Food placed on the hot surface will sizzle and sear much as it does on conventional skillets and grills. The chart and steps below are your guide to getting crisp, browner microwave meals. BROWNING STEPS (Refer to chart below for timing): 1) Preheat the empty browner by placing it, without cover, in your microwave oven. Set the oven at HIGH (100%) power for the recommended preheat time. Halfway through preheat time, rotate dish. 2) At end of the preheat time, (if desired, coat browner cooking surface with butter or margarine) quickly place food on browner cooking surface, preferably without removing dish from oven. 3) Check your recipe for recommended cooking times; and microwave for half this cooking time. (Slightly decrease cooking time if recipe does not say to use a microwave browner.) 4) Turn food over and rotate dish. Complete cooking time as recommended. Microwave Browner Preheat Chart NOTE: READ the important use-and-care information on page 6 before using your browner. Preheat times given here are approximate and are designed for ovens having watts (as declared by manufacturer); if your oven is of lower wattage, increase preheat times. 6 Microwave Browners Use and Care CORNING Microwave Browners Read Instructions, Page 3. USE: For maximum browning, make sure food is dry and defrosted. Press food on preheated browner surface with spatula. You may also increase preheat time, but DO NOT exceed maximum preheat time! To decrease amount of browning, decrease preheat time. To preheat browner for a second serving, remove leftover food and drippings first; then, preheat for 1 /2 the original time. Using browner with plastic or paper accessories is not recommended. It is normal for the browner's cooking surface to turn yellow when hot. Browners get very hot. Always use potholders and trivets when handling. Conventional oven or stovetop use is not recommended; it may damage the browner's special coating. CAUTIONS: Failure to follow instructions may cause damage or breakage of products, oven shelf or glass covers. DO NOT preheat browners longer than maximum recommended time. (See chart, page 3.) DO NOT use Browning Skillet's glass cover during preheating. DO NOT remove preheated browner from oven when adding food. PYREX Ovenware Use and Care USE: Use PYREX Ovenware in microwave, conventional or convection ovens, or in refrigerators or freezers. It can go directly from freezer to oven to table. CAUTIONS: Failure to follow these instructions may cause breakage. DO NOT USE ON TOP OF STOVE. DO NOT use under a broiler or in a toaster oven. DO NOT add liquid to a hot dish, place hot dish on a wet or cold surface, or handle with a wet cloth. DO NOT use chipped or cracked ware. DO NOT use metal cleaning pads or metal utensils; these will scratch the ware. CORNING WARE Products Use and Care USE: Use CORNING WARE products in microwave, conventional or convection ovens, or in refrigerators or freezers. The ware can go directly from freezer to cooking unit to table. Use CORNING WARE products in toaster ovens or broilers, but WITHOUT the clear glass covers, which could break. Set dish on baking sheet for easier handling in awkward spaces. Keep in mind that using shallow containers to broil fatty foods may cause spattering. Use only non-metal utensils; metal ones may leave grey marks on the ware. CAUTIONS: Failure to follow these instructions may cause damage or breakage. Use caution when using CORNING WARE Little Dishes on top of the stove. Although stovetop use will not damage the glass-ceramic material, the design of the cookware makes it impractical for this purpose. DO NOT use glass covers (included with some items) under a broiler or in a toaster oven. DO NOT handle hot covers with a wet cloth or put on a cool or wet surface. DO NOT use glass covers or CORNING WARE if chipped or cracked. DO NOT use plastic covers for any heat-related purpose. They are for storage only. DO NOT use metal cleaning pads or metal utensils; these will scratch the ware.
