1 Healthy Eating Active Living, Schuyler County NY HEAL Schuyler Newsletter Volume 2, Issue 1, February April 2017 Quick Summary from 2016 HEAL Schuyler Annual Report HEAL Schuyler was successful in implementing 15 interventions identified for 2014 through HEAL Schuyler s Worksite Wellness interventions included The Biggest Loser and the Schuyler Steps Out program. Both programs have proved to be successful the past three years and HEAL Schuyler was able to expand the program to other worksites in HEAL Schuyler also saw an increase in participation in adult community activities that promoted physical activity. HEAL Schuyler published their first quarterly newsletter in 2016 and their first walking trail maps project, Schuyler Walks on their website and plan to distribute brochure maps in HEAL Schuyler has increased their promotion of healthy lifestyles, through participating in events and publishing information through social media and newspapers. HEAL Schuyler s promotion and tracking of youth activities was limited. Some youth activities were established through HEAL partners and proved to be successful. Expanding the knowledge base of partners in obesity prevention increased in 2015 and 2016 with identifying emerging best practices and implementing them. Identifying new obesity prevention work added 2 interventions in 2015 that HEAL Schuyler partners implemented. The two new interventions included the Baby Café at the Montour Falls Library and the Choose HEALth Voluntary Food Standards for Eateries. Seed Library at Montour Falls Library Daniel Butler at the Montour Falls Library has started something new in Schuyler County, a Seed Library. He was inspired to bring the concept of a seed library to Montour Falls Library after seeing one in Rochester. He had sent out numerous request out to seed companies asking for donations to the seed library and started getting a variety of vegetable and flower seeds in return. A family can take as many as 15 seed packets and also bring in their unused seeds to the library for other people to use. The goal of the seed library is to offer families a healthy alternative to getting fresh produce on the table. The program also hopes to educate children on the wonder of gardening.

2 My Personal Pizza Ingredients 1/2 whole wheat English muffin 1 1/2 Tbsp spaghetti or pizza sauce 1 Tbsp grated cheese, such as cheddar or mozzarella 4 Tbsp chopped broccoli or other favorite vegetables Steps 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees or use a toaster oven. 4. Add cheese and broccoli or other pizza toppings of your choice. 5. Bake 5-7 minutes until muffin is lightly browned and cheese is melted. 6. Allow to cool slightly before eating. 7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours. 2. Lightly toast English muffin. 3. Spread with spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce. 3 Enjoy Your Food, but Eat Less Create an eating style that can improve your health now and in the future by making small changes over time. Consider changes that reflect your personal preferences, culture and traditions. Think of each change as a win as you build positive habits and find solutions that reflect your healthy eating style. Use the tips and links below to find little victories that work for you. Make small shifts in the type and amounts of food you eat: o Make a goal to eat one more vegetable each day o Choose whole wheat bread instead of white bread o Shift from whole milk to low fat or fat-free milk in your breakfast cereal o Vary your protein choices eat less meat and more beans, nuts, tofu and fish o Reduce the amount of saturated fats, added sugars and salt you consume each day Be mindful as you eat: o Take the time to sit and enjoy your food Avoid oversize portions: o Use a smaller plate this helps you to control your portions effortlessly! o If you eat out: Select baked or broiled foods instead of fried foods Ask for sauces and salad dressings on the side Restaurant portions are often large split your entrée with a friend, or take half your entrée home. Check out the USDA s SuperTracker tool at Use SuperTracker to: Find out which foods and how much to eat Get a personalized food plan for your age, gender and physical activity level Compare nutrient content of foods Find more recipes on Finger Lakes Eat Smart Website: Winter Squash and Black Bean Chili Ingredients 1 tablespoon canola oil 6 cups cubed Butternut or Hubbard squash 1 cup sliced carrots 1/2 cup onion, chopped 3 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper 2 cloves garlic, minced 28 ounce can stewed, low salt tomatoes 1 cup water 15 ounce can low-sodium black beans, drained 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (optional) Steps 1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium high heat. Add squash and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden. Remove squash from pot and set aside. 2. Return empty pot to stove. Saut carrots and onion until well browned, stirring constantly to prevent burning. Stir in chili powder, cumin, cayenne pepper and garlic. Cook one minute, stirring well. 3. Add tomatoes with their liquid and the 1 cup water. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to low heat. Cover and simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally with a spoon to break up tomatoes. 4. Stir in squash and black beans. Raise heat and bring to a boil. Lower heat, cover and simmer 15 minutes, or until squash is tender and chili thickens. Stir in cilantro, if desired, and serve.

4 Registration Now Open for Charity Race, Arc Grand Prix Run at Watkins Glen International Lace up your sneakers for the biggest running event in Watkins Glen, The Arc Grand Prix Run at Watkins Glen International. This 3.4 mile run/walk on the world famous road course returns for its fourth year on Saturday, April 8 during WGI s Opening Weekend. Race day registration begins at 7 AM and the race starts at 8 AM. Online registration for the race is now open at Early registration fees are $25 for adults and $10 for youth ages Race organizers are encouraging participants to register early to guarantee their shirt size and avoid the $5 registration increase after March 11. Medals are awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place male and female finishers in 16 age divisions. Prizes are awarded to the top pledge raiser and to the team with the most members. Volunteers receive a free shirt and can register online. Race merchandise is available for sale on the website. The race is organized by a committee of Arc staff and volunteers. As in former years, Watkins Glen International Opening Weekend activities, including pace laps, will begin at 10:00 AM. The after party at Grist Iron Brewing Company starts at 11 AM with food, brews, live music, and raffles. A New Healthy Option for Everyone Two years ago St Mary s of the Lake adopted a new mission, a Community Table where everyone regardless of income level or religious affiliation could come together and enjoy a free healthy meal and fellowship. Every week volunteers prepare a meal to share at St Mary s Center at th Street in Watkins Glen and everyone is welcome to come enjoy the meal and the company from 5-6 PM every Tuesday. Schuyler Outreach of Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler Counties is also located in St Mary s Center. They are open from 9-2 on Tuesdays and Thursdays and Fridays from We receive generous donations of food from the Watkins Glen Walmart every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, says Kris Morseman, pantry coordinator. Many times it is more than we can distribute to our pantry visitors during their monthly visits. Elimination of food waste is high on our priority list so we have joined forces with the Community Table and encourage diners to take the fresh fruits, vegetables and bread home with them to enjoy or to pass on to someone who could use a little extra nutrition. This just makes sense because working families often can t get to the pantry during the day. They can take the night off from shopping, cooking and cleaning up after and get a break on their grocery bills by picking up some fresh fruits and vegetables. Both programs are member agencies of The Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
