After shooting three men Roy Bean was eventually hanged, but luckily, the rope stretched and Bean managed to stay alive long enough for the woman he had last fought for to cut him down. He bore the rope scars on his neck for the rest of his life. His famous saloon, 'The Jersey Lilly, in Langtry Texas, was named after the famous English actress, Lillie Langtry. Although he never met her he developed an abiding affection for the beautiful actress after seeing her in a magazine. He became a justice of the peace but knew little about the law. During the course of his duties, he once fined a dead man $40 for carrying a concealed weapon. When a lawyer used the term habeas corpus Bean threatened him with hanging for using profane language. Less amusing was Bean s decision to free a man accused of killing a Chinese rail worker on the grounds that Bean knew of no law making it a crime to kill a Chinaman. Reports of Bean s rulings made him and his saloon famous, and a sign proudly proclaimed Bean to be the Law West of the Pecos.
