The Pillsbury Doughboy will be a float as well as Ronald McDonald and the Aflac Duck. This years parade is sure to be a blast for everyone on November 23,Thanksgiving Day so tune in Bulldogs! Veterans Day in the Valley By Hanna Walsh Not to be confused with Memorial Day, Veteran s Day is a day where we celebrate the brave men and women who are or who have been in the military. If you ask your friends or teachers, you ll find that many of them know someone who is has been or is currently in the United states Military. In fact, 1.4 million Americans are currently serving in all the military branches. This is why every November 11th, we nationally honor the men and women who have chosen to serve in the U.S. military. Every town, city, and state celebrates Veteran s Day in their own way. In our town of Hemet, California, we have a tradition. At our local Gibble Park, we set up 1,776 flags in honor of our Vets and Independence Day. Local politicians make appearances, school bands play, and war stories are told. It s a great way to get out there and show your gratitude for local Veteran s. Another thing we do across the nation is free meals for Veterans. Popular places to go get a great free meal in Hemet are; IHOP, Denny s, Red Robin, and Chili s. One thing that did change this year was the fact that many places no longer require an ID to prove Vet status. All in all, Hemet had a very successful Veteran s Day and it was so wonderful to see the community come together to pull this day off.
Black Friday By Sabrina Hunter The first use of the phrase Black Friday referred to the crash of the U.S. Gold Market in Now, the phrase is used to talk about the discounts in stores the day after Thanksgiving. For retail workers this day is awful because they have to come into work after Thanksgiving, or even the night of Thanksgiving. Some stores open up for deals at 6 pm Thanksgiving day and cuts the happy holiday short for the employees, but the holiday pay convinces some workers to come in to help with some extra cash for Christmas. For shoppers, Black Friday is fantastic. Some families eat dinner early in order to get to the stores before the discounts end or the product runs out. Another family may have only one or two people who want to go shopping and they will go out alone. Another family could go out together, but separate in the store in order to buy each other presents. The Origin of Thanksgiving By Sonya Tyler Thanksgiving Day is a public holiday that is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the U. S. It was first started as a harvest festival. It has been celebrated since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation from George Washington. Since 1864, Thanksgiving has been celebrated as a federal holiday. During the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving as a national holiday. He proclaimed Thanksgiving would be for Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. Thanksgiving is part of the fall/winter holiday season. The First Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in The feast lasted three days. The New England colonists were accustomed to days of prayer, thanking God for blessings. The tradition of eating turkey on Thanksgiving started by: Colonists had hunted wild turkeys during the autumn of Turkey is also a uniquely American (delicious) bird. It gained traction as the Main Course on Thanksgiving for Americans. This was after Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday in To some families, Black Friday is almost repulsive. The idea of people leaving their families to shop on a day about family is disgusting. These people wait to eat Thanksgiving dinner at a normal time, and just enjoy each other s company until it s time to eat. The aggressiveness is also unappealing. In shows, people are often portrayed as willing to fight for the last product of their choice. They are willing to push and shove for the best deals. However your family spends the day after Thanksgiving, another family will spend it differently. Enjoy your discounts. Enjoy your family. Enjoy the period of time you are free from school. Be thankful this Thanksgiving. Journalism Staff Hemet High School E. 3 Thanksgiving is known for it s food, and your ability to enjoy yourself fully depends on your ability to stuff yourself. Getting ready to obtain belly purely made of gravy is no easy task. Lots of preparation is needed to devour that much food. Luckily, I m here to help you successfully feast this Thanksgiving. Step 1: The sweatpants No one should be wearing skinny jeans on Thanksgiving unless they re eating a little salad and one roll. You re kidding yourself. Where those sweatpants with pride, especially since you re going to need them. Step 2: The Pre-meal No breakfast and no lunch! If you re hungry, snack off some of those fried onions on top of the green bean casserole, you know the ones. If you eat a full meal before Thanksgiving prepare gastric bypass surgery because you ll have busted a gut. It s just a really bad idea. Step 3: The food, Round 1 The food is obviously the most important part of Advice: How to Eat the Most By Sydney Amestoy Thanksgiving. Prepare the first plate like there is no seconds allowed. The potatoes piled high, the turkey buried under gravy, a good serving of stuffing, and maybe a big spoonful of green bean casserole (no just me? Ok.) Eat slowly, you don t want to die. Step 4: The food, Round 2 Time for seconds and the food has never looked better. Now you know what you like so choose strategically. A little less food than last time, you don t want your stomach to be the size of your head. Proceed to thirds with extreme caution, there s still pie! Step 5: The pie One slice is good, unless the pie is amazing. Pie is the thing that really kills the roll of your food crawl. Just remember, pie is the final marker of a good Thanksgiving, so don t miss it! Step 6: The Aftermath Take a shower, clean off that gravy, and then immediately throw yourself in bed. That s all folks. Traditions By Sabrina Hunter family has some sort of tradition. The the privilege of eating at the adults table until Every classic tradition often portrayed in television is the breaking of the wishbone. In shows such as Bob s Burgers and FRIENDS they show them breaking the wishbone, whether as a tradition or for good luck. Even comics such as the Peanuts show this tradition. My fellow journalism members have some traditions as well. Hannah Walsh said that every year they spend Thanksgiving at her grandma s house and it has become a tradition to play trivial pursuit every year where they compete, despite playing it for so long that everyone knows the answers. In addition to the game, they have two separate tables where they eat dinner, the adults table and the kids table. They don t have they are 18! Sydney Amestoy has a tradition of going out to the desert every Thanksgiving break. Her family also always eats green bean casserole and attempt to watch football. MJ Vargas says the only tradition that has stood the test of time in her family is that they bake cookies every year. Natalie Martinez s family is one of the many families to participate in Black Friday. They eat really early then head to stores such as Target for the Black Friday savings. The few traditions held in every family leads to the question, Is our generation breaking tradition? The answer is unclear as it varies from family to family, but as long as your family is continuing being as annoying, lovable, or dysfunctional as usual, the holidays will continue happily as usual.
Give us a break! By: Natalie Martinez Well it came and went just like all the good ones, the long deserved three day weekend that us seniors craved, begged for, and needed. It was a three day weekend of course because veterans day fell on a Friday, and all of us were pretty excited to have one day less of school. I know right now that us seniors appreciate it a little more than the underclassmen due to us having to deal with college applications and scholarships and essays and somehow having to fit in Whalen s Gov. homework between all that. IT S REALLY STRESSFUL. guess you can say no one complain when we I figured out it was a three day weekend, and with the time change, a long one at that. I for one, spent the entire three days watching movies. Yup. THE ENTIRE THREE DAYS. I have no regrets. Us seniors just needed a little me time. It s hard to function with so much going on and it s nice to get this much needed break. We need to cherish them because sooner or later, finals are coming, and you know all of us are going to start malfunctioning and start flipping tables and pull out all our hair due to stress because we ALL decided to study and leave homework for last minute. We re just funny, odd, yet good human beings like that. So now that we ve had our momentary break, it s time to get our heads out of the clouds seniors and start going back into the daily grind. Finish those college applications and scholarship forms and succeed in everything you do. Now is not the time to fail. The Joys of Gravy By Sydney Amestoy Gravy is the liquid of the gods. Drippings worthy of drenching your entire Thanksgiving plate, or maybe some biscuits. Brown or white, sausage or turkey, gravy is the sauce that stands above the rest. The best thing about gravy is its simplicity. Sausage gravy, the creamy gravy that belongs over biscuits, is the easier of the two. Simply make your sausage, crumble it up, add some flour, a little stock and boom. Gravy. However, brown gravy is the cream of the crop. The beautiful sauce that adorns a good mashed potato or your dry Thanksgiving turkey in all its savory glory. There are some people who don t enjoy the joys of gravy. Sabrina Hunter says, I think gravy is gross. This attitude is, of course, fine to have. Everyone has the right to his or her own opinion. However her position intrigued me. So I asked why she didn t like what is clearly the best sauce on Earth. Sabrina Hunter replied and quote, Why don t you watch your attitude? guess that settles it, the gravy lovers and haters will fight till the end of time. Or at least I until Thanksgiving is over.
November Is National Native American Month! By MJ Vargas November is a really lovely month where the smell of sweet pumpkin spice fills the air and the leaves of many beautiful trees change color and fall down to the ground in the season of Autumn and Fall. People love all of the beautiful things that November has to offer and many enjoy the holiday of Thanksgiving, where people get to eat a lot of turkey and do many festive activities. But to many it really means something to them since they know the reason behind the really festive holiday. November is considered National Native American Month, Native Americans get recognition for their service in the military and helping the US with wars that were fought. Red Fox James, who was a Blackfoot Indian, rode on a horse from state to state seeking for an approval to honor Native Americans and what they have done to help the U.S. The very first Native American Day was declared was on Saturday of May in 1916 by the governor of New York. In 1990 President George Bush approved a joint resolution designating that November will be National American Indian Heritage Month. Native Americans will always be remembered for their support in the U.S. and the help that they have been to the country of the United States of America, their recognition is more than well deserved. ON SALE AT THE ASB WINDOW UNTIL THE END OF THE SEMESTER Where do you go for Thanksgiving? By Hanna Walsh It s that time of year again where you put on your eating pants and your family gets together to make fun of everyone, yes, it s Thanksgiving. You probably have plans to either go out of town or host the holiday at your house. You may have one with each parent or grandparent, and becomes so stuffed you couldn t possibly eat any more. Indeed, what a wonderful time of year it is. This is what your fellow Bulldogs are doing this Thanksgiving. Natalie Martinez is a senior and she hosts Thanksgiving at her house every year, and then takes the venture of participating in Black Friday shopping. At this time I d like to wish Natalie and any other student going to please be careful and avoid Wal-mart at all costs. Sydney Amestoy, a sophomore, is going with her family to the desert. Who wouldn t want to eat a three course meal and then go riding in ninety degree heat-am I right? All jokes aside, Sydney is looking forward to this tradition and some quality time with her family. Joelle Riccardi, senior, has two wonderful grandparents who invite the family up to their cabin and host it from there. They spend the day playing games and catching up on life and the family gossip. Amy Diaz, also a senior, has her family come over where they proceed to indulge in a traditional Thanksgiving and Guatemalan feast. Sounds to me like everyone has pretty interesting plans this year. So, I ll leave you with this Bulldogs, eat a lot, sleep a lot, and repeat this Thanksgiving. Happy Turkey Day!
Dia De Los Muertos By MJ Vargas Dia De Los Muertos is not Halloween in Mexico and it s not a scary tradition. It s a holiday in Mexico that Mexicans celebrate to honor their loved ones that have died. There are actually two days that compose of Dia De Los Muertos. The first day which is November 1, is the day of the innocent, this is when they honor children that have died and lost their live. The second day would be November 2, when they are joined by the spirits of departed adults. Not only are humans honored, animals are honored too! Many people have lost loved pets such as dogs, cats, turtles, rabbits, iguanas, any animal that you can think of. They go to their graves and honor those that they have lost, putting flowers and goods that they made for them on their grave. All of those loved ones who have died are remembered with joy and love and they re also given many flowers and things such as what they liked to eat, toys that they loved, and anything that people wanted to give them. They would go to the cemetery and look for their grave to give them all of the goods and gifts that they have for them even many loved pets and animals get a gift and many goodies! Dia De Los Muertos is celebrated every year in Mexico but is also celebrated in many other countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru, and Venezuela celebrate the holiday where many people honor their loved ones and enjoy the bright life that they had when they were with their family. Just say thank you already! By: Natalie Martinez Now thanksgiving is here and you Bulldogs have to start coughing up the Thank you s. It s not a hard thing to do, and you should say it more often, especially around this time of year! A lot of us forget to say the simple word, and we shouldn t. We have to be thankful for everything we have, nothing in this life is guaranteed. We take a lot of things for granted, like food, water, the clothes on our back, the roof over our heads. It s easy to forget to thank the people who provided all those things for us, and I m pretty sure that those people sacrifice themselves a lot to give us those things. think that by giving thanks, just saying it, I to all of those around you, you ll like the outcome. Seeing the smile and the love on their face as you thank them is such a beautiful thing, it s a beautiful feeling, putting the smile on someone else s face just because of a simple word. So give thanks. Thank them for their love, their friendship, their support, for being there when no one else was. Just say thank you. It s not that hard. Have a great day Bulldogs. Three reasons to love fall!!! By Sonya Tyler The Gorgeous scenery!!! The red, orange, and yellow leaves cover the ground in a beautiful, crunchy carpet and makes for a great photoop. You can Pumpkin Spice everything- Starbucks Pumpkin Lattes, cookies, and even scented candles. I love the smell and taste of Pumpkin spice during the whole season of fall. Football?? Yes, I am there! Fall is the best season to play and watch. The fresh air, bands, and even Hot Chocolate. I mean what s not to love about fall?!!!
Pumpkin Cookies with Cream Cheese By: Natalie Martinez Hey Bulldogs! Thanksgiving is coming up and we all know food is the number one thing on our minds! So I thought you would all enjoy a recipe so you can make a cool, easy, seasonal food at home! Ingredients: Cookies (muffin tops) 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1 cup butter 3/4 cup white sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 egg 1 (15 oz) can of pumpkin puree What s the best part about Thanksgiving??? By Sonya Tyler Mmmmm! Pies, turkey, cranberry sauce, and ham? Thanksgiving never tasted so good!!! Now, who doesn t like turkey or pie? This is way better than any restaurant. No one can beat this!!!! Yeah, I know, Thanksgiving isn t all about the food. It can be about traditions or even how Thanksgiving got this way. Maybe even Thanking God for all the many blessings. To be honest, my traditions every Thanksgiving is praying with my whole family, holding hands, and thanking God for all the food that was put on the table, and for bringing our family together. And actually, we also do that on Christmas. For me that is the best part about Thanksgiving. Frosting 1 (3 oz) package cream cheese softened 1/4 cup butter softened 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups confectioners sugar Directions: First you want to preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and lightly grease baking sheets so the cookies won t stick! No one wants cookies that fall apart! Second you have to sift together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and ginger in a bowl. Then you mix together in a separate bowl 1 cup of butter, white sugar, brown sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract and egg with a electric mixer and beat it until it s smooth. Next you add and beat in the pumpkin puree and add in the dry ingredients. Then you spoon the batter or pipe the batter onto the prepared baking sheets and bake in the preheated oven until cookies are lightly browned minutes. Let them cool for about 5 minutes before moving them to cool on waxed paper. Finally, beat the cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla with an electric mixer until it is soft and creamy, beat in confectioners sugar slowly ensuring frosting is smooth and spreadable then either top or use the frosting between cookies. And viola! You can now enjoy your delicious pumpkin cookies with cream cheese! Happy baking and savor them Bulldogs! Variety Show By Sabrina Hunter Every year Hemet High has a variety show. This year the show is taking place on Thursday, November 16, 2017 at 7 o clock in the theatre. The Thespian Officers will host the event. They also decided who would be in the performance. The show will display our students talents and abilities. From dancers and singers to skits performed, Hemet High has always had an abundance of talent. In the past, there have been political skits, group performances, and singers. Every year, there has been more talent in other aspects of the school including plays and tech, so it is almost guaranteed that the performances will be fantastic.
