Contro of Substances - Heath and Safety Important This appiance may contain some of the materias that are indicated. It is the Users/Instaers responsibiity to ensure that the necessary INTRODUCTION The Rayburn 300W has been designed to burn wood ogs ony. The grate baffe pates must be in pace before using the appiance. THIS APPLIANCE IS NOT APPROVED TO BURN SOLID MINERAL FUELS. Under norma use it is not necessary to ridde the grate. The correct setting of the spinwhee and fue damper wi be found after having some experience with the appiance and wi ater according to day-to-day requirements. persona protective cothing is worn when handing, where appicabe, the pertinent parts that contain any of the isted materias that coud be interpreted as being injurious to heath and safety, see beow for information. Firebricks, Fue beds, Fues - when handing use disposabe goves. Fire Cement - when handing use disposabe goves. Gues and Seaants - exercise caution - if these are sti in iquid form use face mask and disposabe goves. Gass Yarn, Minera Woo, Insuation Pads, Ceramic Fibre, Kerosene Oi - may be harmfu if inhaed, may be irritating to skin, eyes, nose and throat. When handing avoid inhaing and contact with skin or eyes. Use disposabe goves, face-masks and eye protection. After handing wash hands and other exposed parts. When disposing of the product, reduce dust with water spray, ensure that parts are securey wrapped. Grate Restriction Pate The appiance comes suppied with three rectanguar air restriction pates on the bottomgrate. These shoud aways be in pace during operation to contro the amount of air into the firebox. They shoud be removed to cean the bottomgrate and to use the ridding rod on the eft hand side of the unit, but must be repaced after ceaning. Secondary Air Side. On opening the firedoor the secondary air side is seen on the base of the opening and shoud be set according to the type of wood used. Air Side haf open - most wood types Air Side Cosed - some hard woods such as oak or when first starting the fire. Fig. 1 WARNING: HOT SURFACES, use the too suppied to operate this appiance. It is recommended to use the heatproof gove suppied when raising the dome ids to use the hotpate. Repacement goves can be obtained from the AGA Shop. 2 RECOMMENDED FUELS The appiance has been tested using wood ogs ony. It is not suitabe to burn soid minera fues. Fue shoud be stored under cover and ventiated, and kept dry. Wet kitchen refuse shoud not be burned. CHIMNEY FIRES Prevention: Chimney fires do not occur in cean, intact, propery instaed chimneys. Have a professiona chimney sweep cean and inspect your appiance at east once a year. More frequent ceaning may be required, based on the type of fue burned, the type of appiance, and the frequency of use. In genera, an oder appiance or one that is used frequenty, wi require more than one cean per year. Fig. 2 DESN Detection: The first indication of a chimney fire is usuay the noise - a roaring sound grows ouder as the fire s intensity increases. Couds of back smoke and sparks wi be seen exiting the top of the chimney; in severe fires, fames can extend severa feet about the chimney. Action: In case of a chimney fire foow these steps but do not put yoursef or others in peri: 1. Ca the fire brigade immediatey. 2. Get everyone out of the property. 3. Cose down the air suppy to the appiance i.e. the primary air spinner and the fue damper. Limiting the fires air suppy wi reduce its intensity. If there is a damper in the chimney connector, pug or cose the opening. 4. If a fire extinguisher is avaiabe, open the appiance fire door just enough to insert the nozze of a 10b, dry chemica fire extinguisher rated for Cass ABC fires. Discharge the entire content of the fire extinguisher into the appiance and shut the door. 5. If possibe, wet down the roof and other outside combustibes to prevent fires ignited by shooting sparks and fames. 6. Cosey monitor a combustibe surfaces near the chimney. During severe chimney fires, these surfaces can become hot enough to ignite. After a chimney fire, have the chimney inspected by a professiona chimney sweep or cooker instaer. Fig. 3 DOOR OPERATION OVEN DOOR OPERATION - SEE FIG. 2 DESN To open the doors. Twist the hande sighty to ift up the door catch from the ocking spinde and pu the door open. To cose the doors. Genty push the door shut unti the door catch makes contact with the ocking spinde. FIREDOOR/ASHPIT DOOR OPERATION The fire door and ashpit door are kept cosed by a turn screw. A too is suppied to operate these when hot and they can be adjusted to ensure both these doors cose tighty. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE PROPER CLOSURE OF THESE DOORS TO PREVENT OVERFIRING. 2

FUELLING WITH WOOD OR PEAT The cooker wi satisfactoriy burn wood ogs, bocks or peat briquettes, but ogs shoud be perfecty dry in order to obtain the best cooker performance and minimise the deposits of creosote. Wood ogs may aso provide overnight banking probems and the foowing hints are recommended:- a) Burn dry soft wood in the day time and dry hard wood overnight if possibe. b) Avoid using green wood on overnight banking as creosote deposits wi be increased. c) Using hard wood in the day time wi give proonged burning but heating response is sower. d) Wet kitchen refuse shoud not be burned. e) Before refueing, open the fue chamber damper to its fu extent and fi the firebox up to the bottom of the firedoor opening. f) To obtain the optimum burning rate a grate baffes must be ocated on the top face of the reciprocating bars at the rear of the firebox (See Fig. 4). Grate ridding is not required. Do not be tempted to fi the firebox fu with fue.refue itte and often unti experienced with the performance of the cooker. Fig. 4 This appiance wi be recoverabe quite quicky, after going out. It is better to experiment with etting the fire die down before re-fueing, rather than keeping the fire too bright. The smoudering embers of a wood fire wi ast for hours so rather than putting too much heat into the oven, it is better to et the fire die down. Add fue as one or two ogs unti you have an idea of the burning rate. 3 FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE COOKER Fig. 5 LIGHTING THE FIRE DESN A Wood and Paper a) Check the fue pipe is free of bockage. b) Open firebox door. c) Open ashpit door. d) De-ash and remove ashpan, empty and repace (Fig. 9). e) Open fue chamber damper to maximum and cose fue chamber door (Fig. 7). f) Lay a ibera suppy of wood and paper on top of the bottomgrate together with a sma quantity of fue and ight. g) Cose and ock the ashpit door with the spinwhee contro open. h) Cose and ock the firedoor. i) With fire estabished, open firebox door and fi firebox with fue. Secondary air side setting can be midposition (Fig. 6). Cose and ock firebox door. Push fue chamber damper back to position which has been found to give desired burning rate and heat to oven. Using a Gas Poker a) Check fue pipe is free of bockage. b) Open firebox door. c) Open ashpit door. d) De-ash (Fig. 8) and remove cinker door (Fig. 10). Insert fat bayonet type gas poker on top of grate baffes. e) Remove ashpan and empty (Fig. 9). f) Open fue chamber door to maximum and cose fue chamber door (Fig. 7). g) Lay a mm (3-4 ) shaow depth of fue onto the grate and ight gas poker. h) Cose the ashpit and firebox doors as far as possibespinwhee contro open. i) When the fue is we aight, extinguish and remove the gas poker, repace the cinker door and ashpan, cose and ock the ashpit door with the spinwhee contro open. cose the firedoor.

j) With the fire estabished open the firebox door and fi firebox with fue. Check secondary air side setting Cose and ock the firebox door. Push the fue chamber damper bade back to position which has been found to give the best resuts Set spinwhee contro to give desired burning rate. When the fire is estabished 0-1/2 a turn may suffice. COOKER CONTROL Set the spinwhee open. The precise amount wi be shown by experience with the appiance, 1 turn wi do to start. Set the fue chamber damper fuy open after refueing and reset to position which has been found by practica experience to give the best resuts. Do not try to obtain a fast increase in temperature by opening fue chamber to its fuest extent. This resuts in most of the heat being wasted up the chimney. Avoid excessive fire temperature - they are unnecessary and may do serious harm to the cooker. The first symptoms of an overheated cooker is the formation of cinker (meted ash) which wi damage the firebricks. Damaged firebricks shoud be repaced as soon as possibe but may be temporariy repaired with fire cement. Keep the ashpit door securey cosed with the front pate catch. Fue Loading When bringing the cooker up to temperature add fue one or two sma ogs at a time. Overfiing the firebox wi resut in an initia oss of oven temperature as the fue heats up and then a rapid increase as the fue burns. This may resut in the oven temperature running away. Adding fue in sma quantities and keeping the firebox ow when cooking wi make cooker contro easier. This technique wi have to be earned by experience and in time the fexibiity of the cooker wi be appreciated. The temperature indicated by the thermodia when rising wi be about 50 C behind unti equiibrium is reached. To reach the desired temperature take action to reduce or stabiise the heat input we in advance otherwise the temperature wi overshoot. Spinwhee Generay increasing the air suppy via the spinwhee wi resut in a faster burning of fue and so more heat into the cooker. Cosing the spinwhee wi sow the fire. When at operating temperature this appiance works we with ess than haf a turn of the spinwhee. Damper The fue damper contro wi aso contro the rate of burn and the amount of heat in the oven. With a high fire, opening the damper (pu out) increases the burning rate. Cosing the damper sows the fire and retains heat in the oven. It is not usuay necessary to cose the damper beyond position 2 but oca conditions may differ. Conversey, when there is a ow fire, opening 4 Fig. 6 Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Fig. 9 Fig.10

the fue damper wi aow heat to escape from the oven and the temperature wi fa. Fue Chamber Door For some chimney conditions it is necessary to open the fue chamber door. Opening this contro wi aow air from the room to go up the chimney and aeviate the amount of combustion air being drawn through the grate. This contro can be varied as required and wi sow the burning rate of the fire. The amount of opening wi vary with day-to-day fue conditions, but opening wi be usua when overnight burning takes pace. If it is found that with the spinwhee shut, the fire sti runs away, set this fue chamber door fuy open to subdue the fire. If when using this contro, the fire goes out, the draught is too sma and the door is open too much. Shoud there be any fume spiage from this point the appiance shoud be shut down and the chimney inspected, as there wi probaby be a bockage. Whenever refueing takes pace the chamber door must be in the cosed position, otherwise smoke may spi when the firedoor is opened. OVERNIGHT BANKING This appiance is designed for continuous burning and the best resuts wi ony be obtained if it is aowed to burn overnight. It is no more expensive in fue costs. Last thing at night, de-ash the fire, empty the ashpan and fuy refue. Ensure that the firebox and ashpit doors are securey cosed, and after cosing the spinwhee, re-open it a quarter of a turn. Open the fue chamber door contro to the desired setting. NOTE: THE BEST POSITION FOR THE FLUE CHAMBER DAMPER CAN BE FOUND ONLY BY EXPERIMENT BUT ALWAYS TRY THE LOW SETTING FIRST. In the morning, open the spinwhee fuy. Open the fue chamber damper to maximum. When it is burning brighty, cose the fue chamber damper to hafway and ighty re-fue, if the hotpate is required immediatey. Re-set the fue chamber damper and door contro. 5

NOTE: THE PRECISE AMOUNT OF OPENING DEPENDS ON THE CHIMNEY DRAUGHT AND THE TYPE/CONDITION OF WOOD TO BE BURNT. THIS MAY TAKE 2 OR 3 DAYS TO ASCERTAIN. If the fue does not burn but dies out, the draught shoud be increased by increasing the opening setting of the fue chamber damper. NOTE: BUILD-UP OF CREOSOTE DEPOSITS IN THE FLUE AND CHIMNEY CAN IN TIME, LEAD TO A CHIMNEY FIRE. THESE DEPOSITS CAN BE PREVENTED BY THE REGULAR USE OF A PROPRIETARY BRAND OF CHEMICAL CREOSOTE REMOVER, WHICH REDUCES THE ADHESION STRENGTH OF THE CREOSOTE DEPOSITS. IMPORTANT: CHEMICAL CLEANERS MUST NOT BE CONSIDERED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO CHIMNEY SWEEPING, ONLY AS SUPPLEMENTARY. DE-ASHING DE-ASH BEFORE RE-FUELLING. It is usefu to remove accumuation of ash from any edges and the bottomgrate with a poke if necessary. Open the ashpit door to give access to the ashpan (See Fig. 9). Empty as required. Cooker usage governs the frequency of re-fueing. NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW ASH TO ACCUMULATE IN THE ASHPAN UNTIL IT TOUCHES THE UNDERSIDE OF THE BOTTOMGRATE BARS OR THEY MAY BURN OUT. Ensure the ashpan is fuy home otherwise the ashpit door may not cose and ock competey. Leaving the ashpit door open wi cause the fire to run away and may cause damage if eft unattended. Under norma use it is not necessary to ridde the fire. Wood ash is sma enough to fa through on its own. The ridding ever is shown in Fig. 8. USE OF THE HOT PLATE The best resuts can be obtained by using machined base utensis. The hottest part of the hotpate is immediatey above the fire, the other end being for simmering. The circuar pug in the hotpate (near the fue chamber end) is for fue ceaning and must not be removed for cooking. Keep the hotpate cean with a wire brush. NOTE: TO OBTAIN OPTIMUM HOTPLATE PERFORMANCE FOR FAST BOILING OR HOTPLATE COOKING, FUEL THE FIREBOX WITH 1 OR 2 LOGS. WARNING: THE COOKER TOP PLATE SURFACE AROUND THE HOTPLATE WILL BECOME HOT UNDER USE AND CARE MUST BE OBSERVED. PLEASE REFER TO THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS REGARDING MINIMUM CLEARANCES TO COMBUSTIBLE SURFACES AND MATERIALS. USE OF THE TOP ROASTING OVEN The correct adjustment of the spinwhee and fue chamber damper to obtain the oven temperature required varies with the chimney draught, and can be found ony by experiment. The foowing is a suggested method ony, and may need modification to suit oca conditions. Suppose an oven temperature for roasting is desired, and that the cooker is iding. Thoroughy de-ash the fire as described in the respective paragraph, and re-fue. Set the fue chamber damper to No. 3 setting and open the spinwhee as described under COOKER CONTROL. As soon as the fire produces fame, cose the fue chamber damper. Do not aow the fire to run away. The temperature of the oven shoud now rise steadiy. When it reaches a point about 50 C beow that required, cose the spinwhee to approximatey 1/4 turn open. Thereafter contro the temperature of the oven by adjusting the spinwhee. NOTE: THE METHOD SHOULD PROVE SUCCESSFUL IN ALMOST ALL CASES, BUT IF CLOSING THE FLUE CHAMBER DAMPER CAUSES THE FIRE TO SMOKE, IT SHOULD BE OPENED GRADUALLY UNTIL THE SMOKING STOPS. Keeping the fue eve ow wi make the oven more controabe. The oven may be ceaned with a stiff wire brush, when it is very hot. 6

OVEN TEMPERATURES:- HOT C ( F) MODERATE C ( F) SLOW C ( F) Check with pointer reading on oven door thermometer. USE OF THE BOTTOM COOKING OVEN It is not possibe to contro this oven, but during the course of roasting, sufficient heat input permits simmering of dishes that have been taken from the roasting oven. OVEN TEMPERATURES:- Iding 95 C min. During cooking C max. During the cooker iding periods, the oven is idea for heating pates and keeping food warm. Fig.11 If the top oven overheats the bottom oven temperature wi rise accordingy. FLUEWAY CLEANING Fig.12 Foowing a proonged shutdown of the appiance, perhaps after the summer break, ensure the fueway is free from obstruction prior to re-ighting. The appiance fueways shoud be checked on a reguar four weeky basis, and ceaned if necessary. Proonged soot formation may resut in fueways becoming bocked and coud give rise to the reease of carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas into the room. Faiure to ensure cean fueways, fue pipes and bends may ead to emission of dangerous gases and an inferior performance from your appiance. Cooker Fueway - Aow the fire to burn out, open the fue chamber damper to its maximum and remove the fue chamber door. Fig.13 Brush the soot or fy ash from the fue pipe aowing it to fa onto the top of the oven. (See Fig. 11). Remove the hotpate pug and push the deposits forward, into the firebox. (See Figs. 12 & 13). It may be necessary to remove the hot pate to inspect the fue restrictor pate which is between the firebox and the oven. This pate must be ceaned reguary. Repace fue chamber door and hotpate pug and ridde the bottomgrate thoroughy to cear the bottomgrate ready for re-ighting. NOTE: THE APPLIANCE IS DESIGNED AND INTENDED TO BE UNDER CONTINUOUS FIRING BUT IF IT IS NOT IN USE ASHPIT AND FLUE CHAMBER DOORS SHOULD BE LEFT OPEN TO ENSURE FREE PASSAGE OF AIR THROUGH THE APPLIANCE AND AVOID CONDENSATION PROBLEMS. 7 Fig.14

CHIMNEY SWEEPING SPARES LIST As a minimum, sweep 6 monthy and inspect soot box at 1 monthy intervas and remove any deposits. NOTE: SWEEPS BRUSHES MUST BE OF THE TYPE WITH WIRE CENTRES AND GUIDE WHEELS. TO REPLACE BOTTOMGRATE BARS Aow fire to burn out first, then open the ashpit door and ift off the cinker door. Remove dead fue with hooked poker into ashpan and then ift up each individua bar, puing forward to remove. NOTE: THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF BARS FITTED AND THE REPLACEMENT BARS SHOULD BE CHECKED AGAINST REPLACED BAR BEFORE REPLACEMENT. SERVICING Aways use a quaified service/heating engineer when servicing is required. Use ony authorised repacement parts. Do not make unauthorised modifications. Any air inet gries must be maintained so that they are free from bockage. Faiing to maintain your cooker propery can ead to a chimney fire. Chimney fires occur when combustibe deposits on the inner was of the chimney ignite. These combustibe deposits, caed creosote, are a natura byproduct of wood burning. A fire hazard exists if 1/4 of creosote (or more) coats the inner was of the chimney. SMOKE/SMELL EMITTED DURING INITIAL USAGE Some parts of the cooker have been coated with a ight covering of protective oi. During initia operation of the cooker, this may cause smoke/sme to be emitted and is norma and not a faut with the appiance, it is therefore advisabe to open doors and or windows to aow for ventiation. Lift the insuating ids to prevent staining the inings. FUME EMISSION WARNING Propery instaed and operated, this cooker wi not emit fumes. Occasiona fumes from de-ashing and re-fueing may occur but persistent fume emission must not be toerated. If fume emission does persist, then the foowing immediate action shoud be taken:- a) Open doors and windows to ventiate room. b) Let the fire out or remove it fue from cooker. c) Check for fue or chimney bockage, and cean if required. d) Do not attempt to reight fire unti cause of fumes has been identified, and if necessary, seek professiona advice 8

Ceaning and Care for your Rayburn REMEMBER: BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT APPLIANCE. DO NOT USE A STEAM CLEANER TO CLEAN THIS COOKER. Enameed Top Pate and Front Pate It is not advisabe to put very wet cothes onto the handrai, as this may craze ename. To keep the vitreous enameed surface bright and cean, wipe over daiy with a soapy damp coth, foowed by a cean dry coth. Wipe off any condensation on the front pate as they occur or the vitreous ename may be permanenty discooured. If mik or fruit juice or anything containing acid is spit on the top pate or down the cooker, be sure to wipe it immediatey or the vitreous ename may be permanenty discooured. Keep a damp coth handy whie cooking, to wipe up spis as they occur, so they do not harden and become more difficut to remove ater. Look for ceaners carrying the VEA (Vitreous Ename Association) approva ogo as this indicates they can be used on your Rayburn. For stubborn deposits, gente ocaised soaking, not fooding is easier than rubbing and hot water and detergent wi soften most burnt on stains in about 10 minutes. A soap impregnated pad can be carefuy used on the vitreous ename (ook for VEA mark on suitabe ceaners). VITREOUS ENAMEL ASS. Tested and recommended for use on vitreous ename Important: AGA recommend Vitreous Ename Association approved ceaners for ceaning the vitreous enameed surfaces of this product. But they are unsuitabe for use on chrome and stainess stee components, incuding the hand-rais and their brackets. The insuating covers shoud be ceaned reguary with a NON-ABRASIVE mid detergent, appied with a soft (coarse free) coth and ighty poished up afterwards with a soft (coarse free) duster or tissue, to bring it back to its origina ustre. DO NOT USE ABRASIVE PADS, THAT ARE NOT VEA APPROVED, OVEN CLEANER, OR CLEANERS CONTAINING CITRIC ACID ON ENAMELLED SURFACES. Oven Door Linings Using oven goves carefuy ift off the oven doors, ay them on a tea towe to protect the ename. They can then be ceaned with a cream ceanser or soap impregnated pad. Do not however, immerse the doors in water as they are packed with insuating materia which wi be damaged by excessive moisture. Insuating Lids Chrome Wipe over with a soapy damp coth foowed by a poish with a cean dry coth. Linings The inings of the insuating ids may be ceaned with a cream ceanser or soap impregnated pad. Ovens and Hotpate Use a wirebrush for ceaning the hotpate to remove burnt on spis. In the main oven spis and fat spashes are carbonised at high temperatures, occasionay brush out with a wire brush. Do not use oven ceaners. The Lower Oven shoud aso be brushed or wiped out occasionay. DO NOT USE ANY OVEN CLEANERS Accessories Oven furniture such as Roasting Tins, Soid Pain sheves, Grid Sheves and Gri Racks shoud be ceaned in hot soapy water, soak if necessary, a nyon scouring pad can be used.
