1 SAFER EATING GUIDE FOOD SAFETY DURING PREGNANCY
2 MEAT, POULTRY & SEAFOOD PROCESSED MEAT (DELI) RAW MEAT POULTRY PÂTE Ham, salami, luncheon, chicken meat, etc. Any raw meat, raw chicken or other poultry, beef, pork, etc. Cold chicken or turkey, for example used in sandwich bars. Hot takeaway chicken. Home-cooked. Refrigerated pâte or meat spreads. Raw seafood. DON T EAT unless thoroughly cooked to at least 75ºC and eaten soon afterwards. Purchase freshly cooked and eat while hot. Store leftovers in fridge to reheat to at least 60ºC, and use within a day of cooking. Ensure chicken is cooked thoroughly to at least 74ºC and eat while hot. Store any leftovers in fridge to reheat to at least 60ºC and use within a day of cooking. SEAFOOD SUSHI COOKED MEATS Ready-to-eat chilled peeled prawns. Cooked fish and seafood (Note: You must be careful about which fish you choose as some fish may contain mercury levels that may harm an unborn baby or young child s developing nervous system). Store-bought. Beef, pork, chicken or mince. 63ºC and eat while hot. Store leftovers in the fridge to reheat to at least 60ºC and use within a day of cooking. Don t use raw meat or seafood, eat immediately. 71ºC (medium), eat while hot.
3 DAIRY & EGGS CHEESE ICE CREAM DAIRY CUSTARD EGGS Soft and semi-soft cheese, for example brie, camembert, ricotta, fetta, bocconcini and blue. Processed cheese, cheese spreads, cottage cheese, cream cheese, etc. Hard cheese, for example cheddar, tasty cheese. Soft serve. Fried ice-cream. Packaged frozen ice-cream. Unpasteurised (raw). Pasteurised, for example milk, cream, yoghurt. Store-bought. Cooked egg dishes, for example fried eggs, scrambled eggs, quiche. Raw egg in food, for example home-made mayonnaise, aioli, chocolate mousse, cake batter, pancake batter. In non-refrigerated commercial products, for example mayonnaise, aioli. DON T EAT unless thoroughly cooked to at least 75ºC and eaten soon afterwards. Store in the fridge, eat within two days of opening pack. Store in the fridge. Keep and eat frozen. DON T CONSUME OR USE. Can be eaten cold if freshly opened. Store in fridge. Reheat to at least 60ºC and use within a day of opening. use-by date. 71ºC and eat while hot. Store in fridge. Always reheat to at least 60ºC and use within a day of making. 71ºC. Don t use cracked or dirty eggs.
4 FRUIT & VEGETABLES SALADS Pre-prepared or pre-packaged salads including fruit salad, for example from salad bars, smorgasbords. Wash salad ingredients well just before making and eating salads, store any leftover salads in fridge and use within a day of preparation. FRUIT Whole fresh fruits. Wash well before eating. VEGETABLES & HERBS Fresh vegetables and herbs. Frozen vegetables. Wash well just before eating raw or wash before cooking. Cook, don t eat uncooked. BEAN SPROUTS Alfalfa sprouts, broccoli sprouts, onion sprouts, sunflower sprouts, clover sprouts, radish sprouts, snowpea sprouts, mung beans and soybean sprouts. DON T EAT raw or lightly cooked.
5 OTHER FOODS LEFTOVERS Cooked foods. Store leftovers covered in the fridge, eat within a day and always reheat to at least 60ºC. CANNED FOODS STUFFING Tinned fruit, vegetables, fish, etc. Stuffing from chicken or poultry. Store unused portions in the fridge in clean, sealed containers and use within a day. DON T EAT unless cooked separately and eat hot. HOMMUS SOY SANDWICHES Store-bought or home-made. All soy products, for example tofu, soy milk, soy yoghurt, etc. Pre-prepared or pre-packaged sandwiches or wraps. Store in fridge, eat within two days of opening or making. Reference:
