3 Flookburgh August 2017 Very sad news Yates Brewery closed at the end of September! :( Efforts have been made to find a buyer over the last few years but none on the horizon, and Graeme and Caroline have decided it really is time to retire. Many thanks to them both for all the truly gorgeous beers they have made for us over the last years. They have gone from strength to strength and consistently been one of the most popular in Cumbria, no cask lasting for long! All good wishes go with them. Now anyone want to buy a brewery? What about a cooperative? 3 / 10

4 Seems like there are now 43 actually producing breweries, one commissioning brewery company, and 1, annually producing, real cider maker in Cumbria (Foxfield) New breweries - now brewing! Handsome... Helm Bar - near Appleby Karrock - Brampton - in Geltsdale premises Tarn Hows - Ambleside - Beatrix Potter theme for beer names Brack'N'Brew at Brackenrigg Inn, Watermillock First beer is Brack'n'Brew Blonde (no idea what the abv is - not on the pump clip) South Lakes - Ulverston Biggar - Walney Island 4 / 10

5 Name changes Windermere Brewing Co is another name used by Watermill; beers are brewed on the same kit - see Watermill page on left for more info. Tractor Shed is the new name for Mitchell Krause News! Beckstones Dave is brewing again, after a long period of poor health for that kind of work. Black Dog Freddy, Barley Juice and others have been seen and loved! New breweries - Now brewing Update 21/04/15 Appleby beers will be available from May 1st at Midland Hotel, Appleby, Stag Inn Dufton, Moo Bar Carlisle, Drover's Rest Carlisle, Crown Inn Newton in Cartmel and the Pheasant, Carlisle Appleby Brewery is set to commence commercial brewing Head Brewer and owner Fred Mills decided to embrace his passion for beer and brewing after a careeer in management consultancy and training. 5 / 10

6 Having secured premises in the Westmorland county town of Appleby, at the time of writing Fred is currently in the process of preparing the brewery with full-time brewing operations expected to start in March Four ales will feature in the initial line-up: Mid-Life Crisis a classic hoppy and bitter India Pale Ale, Senior Moment is their Best Bitter, a Golden ale named after the annual Appleby Horse Fair and Middle Aged Spread, a aptly named Stout! Keep an eye on their website for future developments: Micro-brewery planned for the Brackenrigg Inn, Watermillock. should be open in the next two months... (News & Star, Feb 2015) ""A new brewery will be opening at the Brackenrigg, Watermillock.. Work planned to start on former stable block late last August/early September. Hoping to produce three different beers initially supplying pubs in same chain (North Country Inns : The Bull Hotel, Sedbergh; The Queens, Warwick Bridge; The Gateway, Kendal), will enable ties to be freed on some of the other pubs in the chain. Hoping to supply others in area. The brewery name is still in development" And two other new breweries on the way in the county: 1) Tarn Hows - near Hawkshead - 2 barrel plant using wooden casks 2) Brewery unnamed as yet - in Biggar a cooperative venture using Unsworth Yard's previous kit. 6 / 10

7 New breweries - now brewing! Dec 2014 Chadwick's of Kendal. Tim, who used to brew at Foxfield, has the ex-great Gable kit and is now brewing under the name Chadwick's of Kendal. Beers are being well-received! April 2014 Brewshine Brewery, Kendal Cumbrian Boggart Brewery, Keswick New breweries - on the way! Or Not... as the CASE may be!! 1) The Grey Walls pub in Windermere are well on with starting their own micro, for sale in their pub, mainly... but it has been a long wait, so far! (October still waiting!) 2) Mardale - now seemingly an abandoned plan...: a new brewery, in a fire engine (to get past National Park planning laws) in a pub in Mardale... using redundant kit from 7 / 10

8 the Kirkstile Inn. First beer called Emergency Ale. This beer is already available but is contract brewed somewhere undisclosed! Latest: new licensee and no interest... not looking likely to happen, now! 3) King's Head at Kirkby Stephen - no news - this was a false rumour of mistaken info! 4) Red Man Brewery Egremont Waiting for planning permission at Florence mine - been waiting several years now - will it ever happen? The kit is still there.... 5) Farmers Arms, Newton (outside Dalton) which has a 1/2 barrel plant. Nothing more ever heard of brewing there - seems like it only ever did one brew! 6) Case's Historic brewery name, Case's Brewery, at Barrow may be resurrected, having been closed since the 60s. New owners/brewers have the original recipes - there's been no news on this for ages! 7) Bow Wave Kit was installed, brewing started, a fallout (April 2013) led to brewing being suspended. Further info when received 8) Bitter End Exciting news from the brewer in May 2013 : "brewing at the pub is about to recommence - watch out for the new beers in June!" Update June Pub still calls itself 'Pub & Brewery' but not brewing yet...! Loweswater, Nine Standards and Whitehaven breweries are no longer brewing but pages are in the list just for historical info. 8 / 10

9 Brewery losses! We were all enormously sad to learn that the Geltsdale Brewery closed and the kit sold. One of CAMRA's main promotions is about pub-going. It is not just pubs that are affected by supermarket prices. There is no doubt that Cumbria has a huge number of breweries per capita. Closure and sale of the Bitter End Brewery The 2.5 barrel plant brewing equipment was sold to a London pub, Tap East, situated in the brand new Westfield complex at Stratford, handy for the Olympics! They launched the inaugural Tap East beer, a 6.5% Extra Stout, on Wednesday November 9, 2011 Croglin Castle changed its name to Nine Standards - now closed and beer using same names now being brewed at Settle. Cider makers Solway Cider (regularly producing ) Foxfield Brewery (autumnly producing) Dyken Cider Co (community cider making at Foxfield) 9 / 10
