UK Overview Gene Café is part of Genesis a Korean company that has manufactured small home roasters for many years. They pioneered something they call off axis roasting, this couples hot air roasting with a rotating drum set at an angle which moves the beans from side to side as it turns. This hybrid system gives a good results and overcomes many disadvantages of pure air roasting. So was looking forward to putting the CBR-1200 through it's paces They excel in design, producing a clever, very well manufactured and assembled product. This roaster is quite different to the main commercial offerings out there, but in the demanding 1kg class, it is a very strong performer as we shall see later. My CBR-1200 arrived in a ribbed corrugated plastic box with an aluminium frame. Everything was held by packing and padding. I was expecting things to be damaged, but the box did keep the roaster secure. That said, I would always arrange to pick the roaster up personally if possible. The roaster is not that heavy but I would advise 2 people move the roaster to it's new home. The official statistics state that it weighs around 30kg without the chaff collector (I personally think it weight a little less. The separate chaff collector adds another 4.5kg. Externally the machine has a fantastic quality of finish and would look good if visible to customers. Components used are of the highest quality and it has a very well built feel. The construction is all metal apart from the, roasting chamber, electrics controls and switches, it s a coffee roaster after all and they get hot. The machine is not as quiet as a pure drum roaster because you have the noise of the air fans, but the sound is not too intrusive. The cooling tray is a very good size and cools the beans in a couple of minutes using a powerful cooling fan, which is a little noisier. The cooling tray slides in and out on rollers and can simply be removed so the roasted coffee can be tipped into a suitable container. As soon as you have dumped the beans into the cooling tray, you can drop another 1kg load of green beans into the roaster (ready and waiting in the top hopper), we call this, back to back roasting capability. Depending on the level of roast, about 3-3.5kg of green coffee can be roasted per hour. Tel: claudettep@towability.com

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 2 of 19 Overview cont. There are 3 motors in the machine each with its separate tasks. Fan motor moving hot air through the roasting chamber and into the chaff collector. Motor powering the roasting drum via a reduction gear drive. Fan motor moving cool air through the beans in the cooling tray. Two heating elements provide a total of 3kw heating power for the CBR Although this is a new product to market, it has actually been around in various prototype forms for a 2-3 years. The design is superb and it's a very well finished product, not a prototype.! Whoever designed this roaster knew their stuff and also knew about roasting. "we've got something good here". I've now spent nearly 3 months using the roaster When I got the roaster there was no information, no handbook, nothing except a short video on the web. My previous experience allowed me to come to grips with it very quickly. I tried roasting as per the web video and got terrible results. I reviewed the video again and noticed that the beans in the roaster looked as if they had been pre-roasted and placed there. The pretty model was quite distracting and I realised it was mainly marketing fluff produced by salesmen, no wonder it didn't work! I examined the roaster again, forgot everything I had read or been told about it. I looked at the controls, some which were never explained, and the drum temperature sensor (an analogue addition to the existing digital temperature sensor on the front panel). I gave some thought to; why there would be certain switches and options not touched upon in the sales video and why I would have had them if I was designing it? I let instinct and experience take over, forgot the video and tried to use the roaster as I have no doubt the original designer intended. Immediately the roasts improved and I realised, "we've got something good here". I've now spent nearly 3 months using the roaster, because it takes a while to really get to know something. It makes it difficult in some ways to write a review, because there is a tendency to forget to even mention some of the things you become so familiar with. The more I use it though the more I like it and realise just what a beautifully designed product it is. I know roasters don't have to look good, but this would make a real focal point in any Cafe or Coffee shop. Earlier I mentioned the demanding 1kg class of roaster, which seems to be a difficult area to get right.. Home roasters typically in the g range face significant challenges in getting good roasts. it can be done but requires experience, really good beans and sometimes modifications. At 1kg there's a lot more beans and it can be likened to the home oven vs. much larger mass of the bakers oven scenario. You're going to be able to get a better result and get it a little faster. With a small bean mass, heat it too fast and the resulting roast can be quite uneven. As roasters get larger, you get the advantages of larger bean mass and it's why I strongly recommend the CBR-1200 is used for the full 1kg of beans, because that's going to be the sweet spot for most beans (perhaps with the exception of Monsooned Malabar/Old brown Java). I have not tried smaller bean charges yet and I'm not sure how it would roast them, below 300g might be quite challenging, it's something I plan to try in the future though.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 3 of 19 Roasting Performance - How well does it do the job it s designed for It s best to start with a brief explanation of coffee roasting. Roasting is a big subject and what follows is a simplification of the whole process. The CBR-1200 excels in it's unrivalled view of the beans at all times through the glass roasting chamber Roasters operate at high temperatures, and the beans are roasted for a period of time depending on the degree of roast required. Commercial roasters are either horizontal rotating drums that tumble the green coffee beans as the heat energy is applied; the tumbling prevents burning and gives an even roast; or fluid bed roasters, where hot air is blown through the beans from the bottom and the air tumbles the beans. The CBR-1200 is a hybrid and does a little bit of both. As the bean absorbs heat, the colour shifts to yellow, then to a light "cinnamon" brown and then a dark and oily colour, The roasted green coffee beans expand, changing in colour and density. The roast will continue to darken until it is removed from the heat source. During roasting (or shortly after) oils can appear on the surface of the bean. Unless the roast is very dark, the oils are often reabsorbed back into the bean as the coffee cools. Coffee roasting coaxes flavour from a bland bean; unroasted beans have all of coffee s acids, protein, and caffeine, but none of its taste. It takes heat to spark the chemical reactions that turn carbohydrates and fats into aromatic oils, burn off moisture and carbon dioxide, and alternately break down and build up acids, unlocking the characteristic coffee flavour. Turning this.. Into this.. The other important indicators of roast development are 1st crack and 2nd crack, put simply: 1st crack is the initial expansion of the coffee bean and sounds a bit like breaking twigs or popcorn, this shows normal roast development and typically the end of first crack is associated with a light to medium roast. 2nd Crack is the fracturing of the cellular matrix and sounds a little like tinfoil being crumpled. It is also accompanied by increasing caramelisation of sugars which gives the characteristic bitter tang to darker roasts. Roasting to the end of second crack and beyond results in the darker roasts and eventually charcoal followed by fire! To preserve the characteristics of the coffee most roasts are just after first crack and the end of second crack. Much darker than this and the roast takes over, much lighter and the roast is not properly developed giving a variety of undesirable flavours. Master roasters assess roast development in a number of ways, including sight (via the trier or sample spoon), sound and smoke quality (f you can see the exit of your flue as I can). The samplers of traditional style 1kg roasters are very small, making it difficult to assess the colour of the roast as a whole. 1st and 2nd crack are difficult to hear on the CBR-1200, but this doesn't matter because the CBR-1200 excels in it's unrivalled view of the beans at all times through the glass roasting chamber. This allows you to stop the roast at exactly the right level, without worrying about sample spoons and pullers and the frenetic sample pulling at 5 second intervals near the end of a roast. Green coffee and roasted coffee. Turning Beans brown is not in itself difficult, but doing it correctly is an art, but that art has to be coupled with a capable tool. The CBR is able to roast beans from very light

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 4 of 19 Roasting Performance cont. through to very dark with no problems. So the lighter roasts of so called "3rd wave coffee", to the full range of deep roasts can be produced. I'm going to cover aspects of performance in order from switching on, through to completed roast. The CBR-1200 warms up from cold in a few minutes, much faster than most 1kg drum roasters that take up to 20m The controls of the roaster are simple, 3 buttons, and 2 knobs on a digital panel. Roasts are even and produced in a good time. The roaster has plenty of power, drawing just over 3kw, this makes it a very capable tool in all circumstances. In certain situations when it's very cold and the voltage sags (cold winter nights), some electric roasters will be challenged, I have not found this to be a problem with the CBR The CBR-1200 warms up from cold in a few minutes, much faster than most 1kg drum roasters s that take up to 20m before they are warm enough to start your first roast of the day. The CBR-1200 is warm in a few minutes (that's fast, very fast). On commercial roasters your first roast is different to subsequent roasts, this is because although the machine is warm enough to roast, it's still warming through the rest of the structure. The CBR-1200 is very good here, with there being little difference between the first and subsequent roasts, perhaps a 1m increase in total roast time for the first roast. This is great if you want to roast a smaller quantity each day, as a long warm up time tends to make you want to do longer roasting sessions. time during the roast. There are 2 temperature sensors (in fact there are 3) that display results the user can see. One is a thermocouple for exit air temp from the chamber, the other, an analogue mechanical gauge sensing the temperature inside the roasting chamber. The CBR-1200 has a speedy control response to temperature adjustments, unlike traditional drum roasters that take longer to respond to control inputs. Exit air temperature is displayed on the electronic panel and is something the roaster uses to maintain it's temperature around any set point you input. e.g. 236C It has only a loose relationship to bean mass temperature. However, the simple analogue probe attached to the drum with no fancy electronics...is the most important sensor in the machine as far as the user is concerned! This simple probe, is your guide throughout the roast and makes the difference between good and excellent roasts. I have a 100W halogen lamp mounted on the roaster (just a clip on lamp) and pointing at the drum. This gives me a standard view of the beans day or night, bright or sunny, allowing me to judge my roast colour by the "same" standard all the time. Control over the roast is good and both time and temperature can be instantly changed with a twist of one of the two knobs. The heaters have separate push button switches and either can be instantly turned off as desired at any

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 5 of 19 Roasting Performance cont. The glass drum is one of the most interesting and useful features of the CBR I don't know of any roaster that gives such a clear view of the entire roasting bean mass. it's really easy to see exactly when to end a roast. No sample spoons frantically trying to check the colour every 10 seconds and no guessing on roasters without proper samplers. The clear unambiguous visual view of the roasting beans is fantastic, especially if it's in a shop environment where the public can see the roaster. At the point where you want to stop the roast, a simple button press starts the automated dump process. The drum spins one last time, a special mechanism engages, the beans slide out into the cooling tray below and the cooling fan starts automatically. After a quick check for any trapped beans (and removal with a special long tool), another press of the button, the drum swings round to the loading position and your ready to roast again. Your beans remain cooling in the lower tray and you can load the drum and start another roast. This is called back to back roasting. It is only possible where roasters cool the beans in a separate place to the main roasting chamber. Some 1kg roasters cool their beans in the roasting chamber, this is not good because it doesn't allow for back to back roasting and cools the chamber down. Some have no mechanism for rapidly cooling the beans once they are out of the drum. The CBR does these things extremely well. There is minimal time between dumping the last roast and starting the next. Cooling is fast (about 2m) and efficient in the purpose built cooling tray. Lastly the roasts; you get a nice even result. Obviously the better the bean quality, the more even the roast. I also judge a roast by the grind and extraction later. You can have what I call a "juicy" or "dry" roast. Often beans can be roasted to the same colour, but one will extract in an espresso machine at a much finer grind than the other. Both produce the same volume of espresso in the same time, but one requires a significantly finer grind than the other... and seems "dry" vs "juicy". Small home roasters and some of the poorer quality 1kg roasters tend to produce a "dry" roast requiring quite a fine grind. This "drier" roast tends not to extract as well and not to taste as good. The CBR-1200 produces a "Juicy" roast and requires a grind as coarse for a particular roast level (if not coarser) than the excellent Toper 1kg drum roaster I used to own. I must admit to being surprised by this, as it's reasonable to think an "air" type roast will be dry...but no,, it produces an excellent roast. Roast times are good, with the CBR-1200 having enough power and control to produce roasts quickly or at a more leisurely pace. It can also do dark or light roasting, some roasters are not good at dark roasts, but the CBR-1200 has no problem. I prefer slightly longer roast times, as I find overly short roasting times produce much harsher tasting coffee. However, this is a personal preference. it might seem a little thing, but if your roasting in a shop or at home this matters. Usually with traditional roasters, you can't just switch them off. After roasting you have to let the drum continue to turn for minutes with the heater off and the airflow on. If you don't there is a risk of distortion to the drum or damage to the roaster. This applies to the large Probats and the smaller Topers. This means it's still running in the shop, or a later visit to the workshop to switch it all off. With the CBR 1200, once you have h finished roasting, simply switch it off and forget about it! The heating element inside the drum with its heat shield

Twist to set temperature 1. Press on/off, twist to set time The image above shows the control panel of the CBFR Below which are the 3 buttons for the cooling fan, and heating element on off switches. The panel information is very simple as well. The current panel shows (reading from left to right). The roaster in preheat mode, the max temp set to 260C (way too hot), the preheat temperature is currently 20C. The end roast time set for 15m and the current roast time at 0. This last display shows time in minutes and 10s of seconds e.g = 1m 20s, 1.5= 1m 50s etc.. The 3 buttons at the bottom of the picture are overrides for the cooling fan and heating elements I and II. They are simple press buttons. You may, for example, want to switch off the cooling fan early if the beans are cool enough after a few minutes, because by default the cooling fan switches off automatically after 3-4m. It's clear simple and gives almost all the information you need during a roast, plus some handy alert beeps when preheat has completed, or 2m before the end of the roast. Below is the typical sequence of control inputs to do a roast. Press button 1 to switch on, twist to set roast time in minutes Twist button 2 to set roasting temperature, press to start preheat (twist to set preheat temp if required). Lower bean hopper When preheat temp achieved, press 2 to allow insertion of beans Once beans in chamber long press 2, roasting begins Twist 1 or 2 at any time to change roasting temp or time Long Press 2 at any time to end roast and dump beans

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 8 of 19 Basic Installation requirements simple & easy to install It is a surprisingly easy roaster to use, but as with any roaster there are a few tips and tricks to getting the absolute best out of it.. Bella Barista will supply a user guide detailing basic maintenance and roasting techniques with the roaster, plus some Video of roasting techniques, with narration and a subtitles. These are not marketing videos, but real roasting videos, some in real time. These videos will get you successfully roasting with your CBR-1200 within hours, even if you have never roasted before. 4 main coffee types are covered, Brazilian, Costa Rican, Ethiopian and Sumatran. Installation is simple, the roaster is not too heavy to move and is reasonably compact (as much as a 1kg roaster can be). All the basic ducting and the chaff collector are supplied, however for any business, local health & safety may require venting, dual wall ducting etc. This will depend on local circumstances and you should always check.. Electrical requirements are modest with the roaster drawing approximately 3.2Kw, however the use of a 3 pin 16A industrial plug will be required similar to the picture below. The roaster will come with this plug type and a socket will need to be fitted. It should not require changes to your standard ring main and does not need 3 phase power. Bella barista are totally familiar with this type of electrical requirement (as it is used extensively in other parts of their business) and will be able to advise purchasers. Of course, any electrical changes should be done by a qualified electrician. With any roaster there is smoke and this requires the roasting products be extracted. This is best achieved by venting to the outside via ducting. Below is a photo of the roaster and it's standard transit packaging a specialised corrugated plastic, aluminium reinforced box. Below is the various parts including metal ducting, reinforced plastic ducting for the cooling tray and a smaller pipe for the connection between the roasting chamber and the chaff collector (plus a spare, not shown).

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 9 of 19 Servicing & maintenance - Easy, simple and not much to do At this time I have no servicing and maintenance manual from Genesis, but they do produce guidance for retailers and I am sure this will come in time. They are however good at responding to retailer support requests. I realise that servicing and maintenance is an important issue for any commercial roaster. What follows is my own personal assessment of the machine and the servicing that would be required. This is based in part on the servicing requirements of a Smaller Genecafe CBR-101, now 4 years old and an examination of the CBR roaster, together with some personal disassembly of the unit. roasters. The CBR-1200 is actually much less susceptible to this build up compared to traditional drum roasters. I attribute this to the higher airflow through roaster. The exit tubes right at the end of the drum rarely show any build up (certainly there is none in my 4 year old smaller CBR101). Then there is the flexible tube to the chaff collector, this would be easily cleaned and very cheap to simply replace. The area you may want to clean would be the chaff collector itself, but this would be fairly simple and it can easily be removed from the roaster for deep cleaning. I would not be surprised if you had to clean these areas more than once per year or less. There are no parts requiring very regular adjustment, lubrication or greasing as in a traditional drum roaster. Usually maintenance of this type of roaster would be done on a parts replacement basis. Parts look easy to replace and are usually well priced. I will now break down into sections the potential maintenance requirements. Lubrication - Possibly annually (or every 2 years) depending on usage and limited to one area, the drive cogs for the drum. These are at each end of the roaster and accessible with no disassembly, as they can be accessed by opening the side panels. It would be a simple silicon based lubricant. No other areas should require lubrication. Adjustments - bearings drum etc, none required. Electronics ics, limited to straight replacement of circuit boards, or plug in relays, heater units and motors. All very accessible and easy to change. These are replaced on an "as fail" basis. Cleaning - It is difficult to estimate this as it depends on usage. Roasting creates a brown, flock like deposit at the exhaust area of The roasting chamber itself is a different matter, this will get deposits accumulating on it depending on the amount of coffee roasted and the degree of roast (e.g. very dark roasts create more deposits). I've put a lot of coffee through the roaster and only cleaned the chamber just to check the procedure. I think it's something you might want to do every 1-3 months depending on usage (or weekly, if your usage is very high). If the glass doesn't look very dirty, simply wait until it does before cleaning. It can be cleaned in a sink with detergent and a brush. Stubborn stains have a simple removal procedure detailed in the Bella Barista user guide. The inner metal parts of the roasting chamber will also discolour and can be cleaned, but this is a matter of personal preference. I have never cleaned the internal metalwork of the 4 year old Gene CBR 101 and I probably won't clean the metal in this one either, because it adds no benefit. It easily removes, so you can clean it if you want to. Regular maintenance - Vacuum out the chaff from the chaff collector when it fills and perhaps once every 3-6 months (or more often with high usage), check the interior of the roaster and cooling tray area for any loose chaff that might need a light vacuum with a brush attachment.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 10 of 19 Key features and comments A more detailed probe Item/Description Picture Comments It is a reasonably quiet machine during roasting, noisier than traditional drum roasters due to the higher airflow, but would not be tiring to work around for long periods of time. The cooling fan can be noisy at the end of the roast The roaster is ready to go from a cold start in around 3-4 minutes, depending on ambient temperature. Access to the internal components is good and easy. Controls are clear and easy to use; the temperature is simplicity itself to set. The are no complex user programmable parameters to worry about and I like the fact that it's simple The mains connector should be an Industrial 3 pin on the CE aprproved roasters that will be available for sale. I would think to comply with many of the electrical regulations in industrial premises and the fact the roaster draws around 15A. Roast development (1 st and 2 nd crack) are not easily heard, but the continuous view of the beans while roasting more than makes up for it. Cooling although noisier than normal roasting only lasts a few minutes each roast and can be manually stopped immediately the beans are cool. However, cooling performance is far superior to most 1kg traditional shop roasters! This is really fast and the first roast, only takes 1m longer than subsequent roasts. This is much better than traditional roasters and an important factor when your roasting is split into smaller sessions. Everything is very accessible via each end panel secured by knurled screws that are finger tightened and require no special tools. For certain Allen key type screws on the roasting chamber, genesis provide a T bar extension Allen key tool. This will be a very easy roaster to work on. The simplicity of use does not mean that decent safety features and automated functions are not available. The roaster cannot rotate the drum with the bean hopper down, preheat will shut down after about 4 or 5 minutes of no user input. Roasts will end at whatever time you set and the dump process is fully automatic, or can be initiated at any time. Wiring boxes are available to convert your existing 3 pin outlet. Please note the roaster is single phase 240V, not 3 phase, even though the plug may look similar to a 3 phase plug.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 11 of 19 The glass roasting chamber with it's excellent view of the roasting beans. The glass is heat proof much thicker than you think. It's a substantial piece of glass. The glass chamber gives a view of the beans few other roasters can match The design of the roaster means you don't need large motors. They are industrial grade small direct drive motors. This is largely due to quality assembly, low weight and good design. Replacement if required, would be easy to do and the motor is only held in by a few easily accessible screws. Inside is a spare hose for the drum to chaff collector connection. Mine had it wedged inside as shown and should be removed before roasting The image on the right shows the main drum motor. The image on the right shows the heater fan motor. It is also simple to access and replace. My roaster also came with a bag of spare bits and bobs inside, a cog, some screws and an EPROM chip. Again if your roaster has this bag inside, it should be removed before roasting. If it doesn't, don't worry about it, I didn't see anything useful in there and it might have been because I had a test unit. In both the above photos, the end panels are removed in seconds just by undoing 2 thumb screws as found on computer cases.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 12 of 19 2 Pictures of the drum, in the first it is removed from the roaster and you get a clear view of the chamber analogue temperature gauge. I like this device because it's old tech and simple tech, which means reliable. As for accuracy, from gauge to gauge there may be variance, but it will indicate your personal chamber temperature year after year and give you a steady reference point. The second picture shows the drum in the roaster and you can see the probe inside. This is the point at which the temperature is measured. It dips in and out of the beans and is to one side away from the main hot air flow. This gives a good indicator of what the bean mass is doing. The chamber is made of a high temperature glass (Borosilicate glass). It is very thick as you can see, but very clear. It's something that is going to last...just dont drop it! I removed this glass for cleaning after a very dark roast when trying to copy the manufacturers roasting methods! After this I used my own techniques, which work far better.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 13 of 19 The chaff collector is very accessible with a hatch that simply opens for cleaning. I am vacuuming out the chaff and would probably need to do this every 3 or 4 roasts, depending on how chaffy the coffee is. It's a simple job that only takes a few seconds. The bean hopper, where you place up to 1kg of beans before releasing them into the roaster. This is done by pulling a slider at the point shown Also when this hopper is in the down position, it depresses a button underneath, which prevents the roasters drum from turning. Wiith the hopper in the up "roasting" position, the mechanism can be seen clearly. When the slider is pulled a "finger" appears at the end of the chute, which pushes a small sprung flap in the drum. This allows the beans to enter. The flap then closes to keep the heat in when the slider is released.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 14 of 19 The cooling tray is just under the main drum. This tray will hold 1kg of roasted coffee and slides out on rollers for easy emptying. Cooling is very fast, taking approximately 2 minutes. The beans are automatically dumped into the cooling tray at the end of the roast. The drum is easy to remove, simply undo 2 wing nuts by hand at each end of the drum. And lift out

The roasting smoke which is ducted outside exits here. Ducting and a connector is supplied for this point. The hot air from the roasting chamber enters here

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 18 of 19 Final Thoughts - How well does it do the job it s designed for Reviewing a roaster is a very difficult. You need to do enough testing to ensure that it works properly under all conditions.. I have h put approximately 120kg of coffee through this roaster over a period of 3 months. I wasn't rushed, because the release date for the UK will be sometime in January, so I had plenty of time. I personally have experience of much larger gas powered commercial roasters and the 1kg electric Toper Cafemino. It compares very well with the large commercial roasters and probably out roasts the Cafemino by a reasonable margin. Roasts from the CBR-1200 are really good! This roaster looks unusual (that's good) and it works really well. it has an economy of process that is welcomed by the busy commercial (or home roaster). With traditional roasters, you have the 15-20m warm up and the first couple of roasts are not as good because it's still sinking heat into the body of the roaster. With the CBR-1200, a few minutes pre-heat and your ready to roast. It is designed with the espresso bar, coffee shop, and retailer in mind. People who value the benefit of providing higher quality, fresher coffee and espresso to their customers. It certainly would (in my opinion) enhance any outlet in which it is placed and customers would enjoy the unusually clear view of the roasting coffee. It s a serious machine that will tell your customers that you re serious about coffee. It is definitely capable of roasting 3kg + of coffee per hour, this is not a wishful statement and is well within its capabilities. Many roasters do cooling and roasting simultaneously in the same drum, which is wasteful in energy and usually will only allow a couple of roasts per hour. The CBR has a dedicated cooling area and function allowing back to back roasting. It is not the usual massively heavyweight traditional roaster, because it's a very modern design. The best way I can describe it is to compare a car from the 60s and a modern car. The 60's car would be thick heavy steel, but very prone to rust, relatively low tech and not that reliable. Compare this to modern quality cars. Much thinner metal, but modern construction and technology make cars that are very reliable and don't rust as easily. The CBR-1200 is the same, it's lightweight and modern, but it works ever so well and it's really nicely made.. The range of its capacity was not tested as I only roasted a full Kg in it, mainly because this is what most people will do, it's rather pointless to roast less. If I had to guess, I would expect it could roast as little as 200g. In a small coffee bean outlet or a coffee shop it would easily have the capacity to meet your needs. In 4 hours roasting you would typically be able to roast 12kg or more of green coffee. Importantly, the roaster is designed to be operated for hours on end. Suitable for home use? It has never ceased to surprise me how dedicated home coffee users are and how much they will spend on equipment. One question a few of them may be asking is. is this suitable for home use? Well it s quite big and would need to be installed in a garage or workshop, but yes you could use this at home. It s not designed as a home roaster, but if you really want to, you can have it at home, because 3 phase power is not required, an ordinary ring main will do and it's not very heavy What about spares? Spare parts will be readily available from Bella Barista. The roaster is also designed to be easy for the owner to maintain (as it should be). Parts for roasters made by Genesis have not typically been expensive to buy and I would not expect that to be any different for this roaster.

GENE CAFÉ CBR KG ELECTRIC COFFEE ROASTER A CLOSER LOOK Page 19 of 19 Why buy a CBR-1200? It is really easy to learn how to use and the temperature controller means you don t constantly have to watch and control the temperature. Its performance is a par with much larger and more expensive commercial gas roasters. Installation is also far simpler for an electric roaster, especially when used in a small retail environment worth the money" I was sceptical until I got it and set it up. One look at it though and yes...it's worth the money! Everyone who has seen it roasting has been impressed, especially as they can clearly see the beans tumbling and changing colour as the roast progresses. More importantly, they all say how the good roasts taste! It is going to look very impressive indeed to any of your customers even though it only comes in red at the moment. Things work well and it s very low maintenance, especially compared to home roasters you may have used. Typically these home roasters need more maintenance than the CBR-1200 for roasting considerably less volumes of coffee. Bella Barista - Authorised UK distributor You have the security of dealing with a UK company and enjoy all the protections and safeguards that this offers. Bella Barista and its parent company Time Leisure have over 20 years experience in dealing with commercial catering equipment. This experience will be invaluable in ensuring your CBR-1200 performs impeccably from day one and is well supported from within the UK. It is important for any authorised distributor to be able to rely on the manufacturer and Bella Barista have enjoyed a long relationship going back many years with the manufacturer. Are there some improvements that could be made? For the home user (possibly), but for the commercial user, it's about right. In the commercial environment, things are best kept simple and easy. It looks great! I'm known for demanding value for money and when I heard how much this roaster was going to be, I thought, it's not cheap. The owner of Bella Barista said, when you see it, you will think "it's Bella Barista and its parent company Time It's not cheap, but it is well priced. For the busy commercial user, value for money is about 3 things Leisure have over 20 years experience in dealing with commercial catering equipment Value for money? Does it work well and is it easy to use Can it be easily maintained/is it reliable Will it look good to customers The answer to all 3 questions is yes! For home users you can get a roaster that will roast g for a fraction of the price, BUT, it won't roast as well, it won't last as long and it won't be suitable for commercial use. Interestingly a number of home users have expressed an interest in the CBR-1200 and I'm buying this one for my own personal use! The benefits of an electric Roaster Electric roasters are simple to set up and don't tend to have the safety complications of a gas roaster. If they need to be moved, it's simply plugging it into another outlet and sorting out the venting. The owner of Bella barista and I have looked at (and tested) many different roasters over the years and this one has been the first in a long time that has ticked all the boxes...it's..it's a great little roaster!
