EMERYVILLE: Expanded polystyrene ban, requirement that all takeout food packaging be recyclable or compostable. FAIRFAX: Expanded polystyrene ban for all restaurants and food retail vendors. FREMONT: Expanded polystyrene ban for food vendors, requirement that all takeout food packaging be recyclable or compostable. HALF MOON BAY: Half Moon Bay passed an ordinance, referencing San Mateo County s polystyrene food container ban, on May 17, HAYWARD: Expanded polystyrene ban for restaurant vendors, requirement that takeout food packaging be recyclable or compostable. 14 RESIN CODES POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE Most commonly found in beverage bottles, which are widely recyclable and accepted in curbside programs. HIGH DENSITY POLYETHYLENE Some beverage containers, such as milk jugs, which are widely recyclable and accepted in curbside programs. Other uses, such as for shopping bags, are recycled less and are not accepted in curbside programs. VINYL/POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC) Used in some food packaging and in personal care products. Not accepted in most curbside programs. PVC can be toxic. LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE Used as clear wrap in food packaging and in garbage bags. Not accepted in most curbside programs. POLYPROPYLENE Used in some rigid plastic food containers such as ketchup bottles and in medicine bottles. Not accepted in most curbside programs. POLYSTYRENE Foamed form used in takeout food packaging and is not accepted in curbside programs as it is uneconomical to recycle. Its solid form, used to make hard casings such as CD jewel cases, is not accepted in curbside programs either. PS is a principle component of marine debris and litter. OTHER/COMPOSITE/PLA Other plastics, including composites, which are not accepted in curbside programs. Currently the category includes compostable bioplastics such as PLA, which are accepted in some curbside food composting programs. PLA HANDLING AVOID HIGH TEMPERATURES Label boxes as temperature sensitive Specify routes, shipment times and delivery dates to transport during the coolest part of the day Choose protective blankets or refrigerated trucks during shipping Store under 105ºF/40ºC KEEP OUT OF DIRECT SUNLIGHT Label boxes as sun sensitive Schedule just-in-time delivery for in-field packing of fruits and vegetables KEEP IT COOL. STORE ON A LOWER RACK Store in cooler parts of your warehouse Open shipping container as soon as possible upon arrival Do not store near skylights or heaters Avoid storage under metal roofs with limited air flow HANDLE WITH CARE Don t leave shipments loaded for extended periods of time Choose the right truck or shipping accessory such as insulated shipping blankets Load and ship during cooler times of the day Move shipment indoors upon receipt Ship and store in white corrugated shipping boxes 14 GREEN GUIDE

15 GLOSSARY OF TERMS BIODEGRADABLE: A biodegradable product has the ability to break down, safely and relatively quickly, by biological means,into the raw materials of nature and disappear into the environment. These products can be solids biod grading into the soil (also referred to as compostable, or liquids biodegrading into water. BIOPLASTICS: Disposable food service products made from vegetable or sugarcane fibers. They are designed to mimicplastic disposables but break down in commercial composting facilities or in nature without leaving any toxic chemicals. COMPOSTABLE: All natural and organic products or materials that are biodegradable with the help of air, moisture and natural organisms. ENVIRONMENTALLY PREFERABLE: Another way of saying environmentally friendly, sustainable or ecologically responsible. Some environmental certification programs use this terminology to describe green products or appliances. GREEN: Refers to products, equipment, practices and concepts that promote environmental sustainability. PLA: Processed corn starch called poly-lactic acid, used to form biodegradable cups and carry-out containers. POLYSTYRENE: Pure solid polystyrene is a colorless, hard plastic with limited flexibility. It can be cast into molds wiith fine detail. Polystyrene can be transparent or can be made to take on colors. Expanded polystyrene (EPS), is commonly known by the trade name styrofoam. POST CONSUMER RECYCLED CONTENT: Waste content that has been used in the consumer market and then recycled into new products. RECYCLABLE: Recyclable materials, also called recyclables, may originate from a wide range of sources including the home and industry. They include glass, paper, aluminum, asphalt, iron, textiles, and plastics. Biodegradable waste, such as food waste or garden waste, is also recyclable with the assistance of micro-organisms through composting. RENEWABLE RESOURCES: A resource regenerated by the earth year after year. Renewable products are constructed from sources the planet can regenerate quickly like sugarcane plants, or products that never expire, such as sun or wind.
