3 community Michael Anderson QMW HOA Chairman The year is coming to another close and YOUR HOA management is working hard to make it a smooth transition to another year. By now you have received your end of year disclosures, the locks and handles have all been changed around the clubhouse by Dana Lowe (1 st Chair) and you have received your new key. The Thanksgiving dinner at the clubhouse is coming together with the assistance of Darrell Freeman (secretary) and his band of cheerful helpers. Christmas will follow and decorations will be going up soon. We as a board have worked hundreds of hours this year on your behalf and we truly appreciate your support. As volunteers it takes a concerted effort by all to make this community a wonderful place to live. As I stated last month, I am very thankful for not only the rest of the HOA Board of Directors, committee members, Keith Mougeotte but all homeowners, vendors and service providers who make an effort to sustain this Association. Thank YOU! Every year when homeowners start bringing in the Christmas decorations and setting up the beautiful lights and trees the chance for accidents and fires increase. Please follow these basic preventive measures to ensure you will have a safe and joyful holiday season. Fire Knows No Holiday Important safety tips for a happy and safe holiday season: Use only Underwriters Laboratory (UL) approved lights and cords Use only approved outdoor lights for outdoor use and make sure they are weatherproof Lights should be thoroughly inspected prior to installation Miniature, LED or indoor lights generate less heat and will not dry out the tree as much as larger lights Always unplug all lights and blow out all candles before leaving the house or going to bed Never use candles near trees or windows Never dispose of trees, decorations or wrappings in the fireplace If you choose to use a natural, cut Christmas tree, select only the freshest Needles should bend, not break, when folded Keep the stand full of water and check it daily Keep the tree away from heat sources and heater vents Remove the tree promptly after the holidays or once the needles begin to fall Change your smoke detector batteries If you haven t already done so install a carbon monoxide detector Lastly: Since the time has changed and we will be leaving our lights on longer I wanted to provide this comparison calculator on the cost savings of LED light bulbs. They are more expensive to purchase but the savings are remarkable. I recently replaced my 4 fluorescent bulbs in the kitchen with LEDs from Costco and the quality of light and savings more than paid for them. 8 community Solutions for December Puzzle Kay Wade 855 Whippoorwill Drive (805) Creamy Cauliflower and Gruyere Gratin Makes 6 to 8 servings Ingredients: 1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets 4 tbsp unsalted butter 3 large shallots, trimmed and thinly sliced 3 tbsp flour 1/2 cup chicken broth 1 1/2 cups milk 1/2 cup shredded Gruyere cheese 3/4 cup freshly shredded Parmesan cheese Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3/4 cup fresh bread crumbs Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F. 2. Bring a large saucepan half filled with salted water to a boil over medium-high heat. Blanch the cauliflower until barely tender and still somewhat firm, about 5 minutes. Drain in a colander and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking. 3. In the saucepan over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter. Add the shallots. Fry until tender, stirring, about 5 minutes. Add the remaining 3 tbsp butter and stir until melted. Sprinkle the flour over the butter and cook, stirring with a whisk, until smooth. Slowly add the chicken broth, then the milk, while whisking, until thickened and smooth. Add the Gruyere and 1/2 cup Parmesan and stir until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the cauliflower to the sauce and stir to combine. 4. Grease a 2-qt gratin dish or baking dish. Spread the cauliflower mixture into an even later in the dish. In a bowl, toss the bread crumbs with the remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan. Sprinkle over the top. 5. Bake until bubbly and golden brown, about 30 minutes. (If you like, pop it under the broiler to brown the top a bit more.) Let sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
