Food (Sweeteners) Reguations These Regulations may be cited as the Food (Sweeteners) Regulations 2003 and shall come into operation with effect from 01 April No person shall use any sweetener, other than a permitted sweetener, in or on any food. 3. No personshall import, store, distribute, transport,sell, exposeor advertisefor sale any sweetenerother than a permittedsweetener for use in or on any food. 4. No person shall use any sweetener in or on any food specially prepared for infants or young children. 5. Subject to Regulation 4, (a) (b) (c) no person shall use any permitted sweetener in or on any food specified in Column 3 of the Schedule other than a permitted sweetener specified in the corresponding entry in Column 2 exceeding the maximum specified in corresponding entry in Column 4 of the Schedule 1. a combination of permitted sweeteners maybe used subject to the requirements in clause 5 (c). anyspecifiedfoodin relationto whichcombinationof any twopermittedsweetenersare specifiedin theschedule 1hereto, may have in or upon it an admixture of such sweeteners only ifthe sum total of these percentages do not exceed 100 when the quantity of each such sweetener present in such food is expressed as a percentage of the maximum quanity of that sweetener appropriateto that food.

()-GAZET'EEXTRAORDNARY OF THE DEMOCRATC SOCALST REPUBLC OF SR LANKA Where a permitted sweetener or a combination of permittedsweeteners is used in or on any food, there shall be written on the label of the package containing such food- (a) (b) (c) a description" contains permittedsweetener(s) "X" and "Y" and substitutingfor the letter(s) "X" and 'T' the namets) ofany permitted sweetener (s) used in or on such food. the warning "Excessive consumption may induce laxative effects "where it contains polyols (Sorbitol, Xylitol, Lactitol Mannitol) or somalt. (i) When phenyl alanine is present, the warning "Shall not be used by phenyl ketonurics" (ii) When aspartame is present, the warning" Not recommendedfor children" 7. Every warning or description referred to in Regulation 6 shall be written in a clear and legible mannerand shall not behidden, obscuredor interruptedby any other written or pictorial matter. 8. n these Regulations, unless the context otherwise requires " Act" means Food Act, No. 26 of " Food" has the same meaning as in the Act. " nfants" means childrenunder the age of twelve months. "Permitted sweetener" means any sweetener permitted to be used or intended to be used in or on food under the Act or any regulation made thereunder "Sweetener" means any food additive that is used or intended to beused. (a) to impart a sweet taste to food (b) as a table top sweetener. n these regulations the term "Sweetener" does not include carbohydrate sugars. "Tabl~ top sweetener" means Saccharin and sodium or calcium salts of saccharin, Aspartame, Acesulfame K and Sucralose "Young children" means children aged between one and three years 9. Food (Sweeteners) Regulations published in the Government Gazette Extraordinary No. 1065/9of 2 February 1999are hereby repealed.
