We are so looking forward to WICA s 19th Annual Convention. There are two wonderful speakers who know a lot about white ironstone. See the biographies that follow on these pages. LETTERS A wonderful letter from Paul Millette and Russ Symons really made our day. ********************************** On Tuesday we picked up at our general store post office, a box containing our copy of your new publication, The Illustrated Guide of White Ironstone China from A to Z. Everyone is familiar with the expression, The book was so good that I couldn t put it down. I read the whole thing in one sitting. We couldn t put it down. A glass of wine, page after page, many excited exclamations. We ate dinner at a late hour on Tuesday, with Wednesday evening being a repeat of the previous. And this doesn t even begin to touch upon morning coffee spent with the book which now sports many yellow and blue stick-it notes. We surely cannot be the first to tell you what great pleasure your book gives us. There are such interesting discoveries, such as Lantern. On page 139 is our Framed Panels sugar bowl, it was called Arcaded Trumpet when John Yunginger consigned it at the 2011 WICA auction. Congratulations on the publication of this your new book. We especially like the manner in which you ve used Kew Archives illustrations throughout. Paul & Russ ********************************* PRESIDENT S LETTER As I write this our WICA Convention in Timonium, Maryland, is rapidly approaching and I look forward to seeing you there. If you haven t yet made plans to attend, please do so! I know you will enjoy the trip and fine programs which are planned. After 12 years in WICA governance, with the last 4 as President, it is time for me to step back and take a break. Thanks to all those who have helped and supported me during this time. On reflection, I think WICA can be very proud of the fine educational materials produced in recent years. A special thanks to all involved. A lingering concern is one I have called to your attention previously, we need more members willing to help on committees and governance. I cannot stress this strongly enough! See you soon! Harry M. ********************************* INTERESTED IN BECOMING A FUTURE BOARD MEMBER? According to the Association s By- Laws, a member can submit themself for nomination by sending a written notice to the Chairman of the Nominations Committee at least 10 days before the convention. 3 We warmly welcome these fine guest scholars to the May, 2013 WICA convention. Miranda Goodby has been the Curator of Ceramics at The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery at Stoke-on-Trent since 1995, having previously worked in museums diverse as the British Museum in London and the Spode Museum, Stoke-on-Trent. She has taught at several British polytechnics and universities and lectured widely in the United Kingdom and in North America recently at Winterthur Museum in Wilmington, Delaware. Miranda has published papers on various aspects of late 18th and early 19th century ceramics, including the molding technology used by 18th century potters, the potters Enoch Wood and William Littler and on the emigration of Staffordshire workers to the United States in the 1840 s. ( From the internet.) ********************************* Frank Davenport was recruited directly from college by the BBC and started his career as a video recording engineer at BBC TV Centre London. Following the BBC Frank spent a number of years in charge of a development lab at Yorkshire TV Leeds, the UK s first purpose built color TV studios. Frank moved from broadcast TV into broadcast TV equipment design and development with RCA in Jersey Channel Islands. In 1984 Frank and his family relocated to New Jersey to join RCA Broadcast Systems in Camden, New Jersey. The GE acquisition of RCA resulted in the closure of RCA Broadcast Systems and the relocation of Frank s work assignment to NBC TV Network at Rockefeller Center Manhattan. Later and armed with a knowledge of broadcast TV equipment and operations, Frank moved to GE/RCA Licensing to become a patent agent responsible for broadcast and consumer TV products. Now semi-retired Frank offers IP consultancy. Frank is a Chartered Engineer and Registered Patent Agent. 4 Page 4 Vol BUTTER DISHES In mid-victorian cities and towns butter was sold in chunks cut out of large tubs. Eighty percent of the population lived on farms and churned their own. They sometimes stored butter in spring water to keep it cool and fresh. (It melts at degrees.) I ve been told a small hand churn would produce a chunk that would have fit nicely in a standard size butter dish. Mid-Victorian butter servers for the table were made in silver, blown and pressed glass and ceramic. Ironstone potters made shallow bowls that averaged from 4.50 inches to almost 8 inches in diameter. There are early paneled deep tub shape ones that were made to also hold ice or cold water. (See Figs.1&2) Some of the bowls had a foot under them similar to a small vegetable tureen, but others made the bowl like a low soup dish whose brim was often curved (inverted) to stop the lid from sliding off. Their lids were domed, high enough to not touch the chunk of butter. The lid would help delay rancidity, which is hastened by exposure to light or air, and also helps prevent it from picking up other odors. Bowls were made with a drainer that was perforated with a large center hole to possibly facilitate its removal, and often surrounded by designs of tiny holes. An inner rim was often made for the drainer to rest on (See Fig. 8). A second rim was sometimes made for the domed lid (See Fig. 5). The drainer would also have allowed the butter to sweat. Our modern commercial butters have all of the liquid matter that could ferment the butter removed by centrifugal force. These butter dishes have been found in two sizees. Janet Allers told us that she has had two sizes of Boote s 1851 shape. Also the Moreland collection has two sizes of Pankhurst s Full Rib shape. Full Rib shape is noted for its most unusual form. It is a ribbed melon shape mounted on three raised pad feet and has a liner with a finger hole and an incised floral motif. (See Fig. 11) A few rare larger versions (identical to butter dishes) that are 9 1/4 to 11 inches in diameter, have been described by Jean Wetherbee as hot cake dishes. However in the Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ceramics they are described as a muffin dish or a muffineer (not to be confused with the sugar castor of the same name). They all have rounded domed lids and some collectors believe because some have drainers they are just a larger butter dish. Ellen Hill reports that in transfer decorated ironstone muffin dishes are never found with a drainer or rim and that the domed lids have an air hole. A vent hole has never been found on a white one, but an inner rim and liner have. The vent hole would be an asset to a muffin dish in keeping the muffins or hot cakes from getting soggy. Until a bill of sale is found we will never know if the larger white ones were sold as a butter, pancake, hot cake or muffin dishes. We were surprised when looking in our archives of high domed covered soap or vegetable dishes how many of them looked like a butter or muffin dish. Also, we noticed that the large ones with a liner would make a nice sponge bowl. While researching butter dishes in ironstone we found butter molds for individual servings (See Fig. 10) and that in England butter was clarified into a liquid and was served from a butter boat. It was regularly poured on meats, fish and vegetables. (See Fig. 3) Fig. 3, Right: Kew registry #17566 marked Butter Boat. Above: Fig. 1, Rare Cameo Octagon Gothic covered butter tub by James Edwards, registered July 16, Ice or cold water was put in the base to keep butter chilled. Fig. 2. 12 Page 12 Vol COCKSCOMB HANDLED TEAWARE ELLEN HILL These six-sided pieces with a pedestal were made early in the period of our ironstone. The handle is a very elaborate ring or loop handle which has been nicknamed cockscomb as it is like a rooster or cocks comb. The tea set breaks several of the so-called rules of tea ware: first, the teapot lid sits directly on the teapot base, not on a little shoulder recessed in the pot, second, there are variations in the shape of the teapot lid and the type of opening on the teapot base see, and third, the sugar handles match the teapot and creamer handle style (usually the sugar handles are quite different.) As far as I know, this style was limited to tea ware no dinner ware, toilet ware or children s pieces were made. The cockscomb handle style was made in white ironstone, (WI), tea leaf, Staffordshire transfer ware, flow blue and mulberry ironstone. The mulberry ironstone was by far the most commonly made. What are the differences between makers of the cockscomb handled pieces? The only real difference is in the size of the ring/loop (kidney shape) opening on the handle: the pieces made by Podmore Walker have a larger opening and are more delicately potted. You can only see the difference if you have two pots to compare before you can compare pieces you need a critical mass of examples (at least 2-3). There are so few WI examples, it was necessary to use transfer pieces I have eleven cockscomb handled teapots, which is why I m writing this article. The finials by all the makers look alike an open flower with a high center bud on a little pedestal very prone to damage or often missing. According to Dale Abrams, the two teapots shown in his TEAPOT book were probably made by Jacob Furnival. Here is a little date chart showing the various makers of cockscomb handled teaware: Maker #patts-fb/mul factory dates Podmore Walker Thomas Furnival Jacob Furnival Thomas Walker Brougham & Mayer Elsmore & Foster The last three potters listed Thomas Walker, Brougham & Mayer and Elsmore & Foster were credited with making a pattern called SIMLA which indeed was made in the cockscomb handle style. I have never seen a signed example in the cockscomb style, but would be willing to wager that any SIMLA pieces were made by Thomas Walker. I believe that the cockscomb handle body style was made early around , so were too early for B&M or E&F. They were probably designed by an unknown modeler and the design was sold to the various potters. Why are the cockscomb handled pieces so rare in white ironstone? 1) Podmore Walker made only two shapes in WI, both were registered in 1856 or 1857 and produced very little plain white. 2) Thomas Furnival was not known to have made any WI. 3) Jacob Furnival made lots of WI in many different shapes, mostly 1850s onward. 4) Thomas Walker did make some WI but only two body styles are documented: Grape Octagon and Classic Gothic and his pieces are usually impressed T WALKER. 5) Again, early potting dates ( ), make any large amount of White Ironstone very unlikely. I believe that Jacob Furnival made the rare pieces with cockscomb handles in both Tea Leaf and White Ironstone. Jacob Furnival was in business in , although the bulk of his designs were rounder, smoother and made later in the potting period. There is one more piece of evidence that points to Jacob Furnival most his pieces, both flat and hollow, have a small impressed letter P on the bottom of the piece. So if you are the lucky owner of a cockscomb handled piece in Tea Leaf or White Ironstone I believe it was made by Jacob Furnival enjoy it!

14 Page 14 Vol SHOW & TELL Attached is the Frog I wrote to you about. Is it usual or unusual? You probably see these all the time in the East I just thought it was pretty cool. Kris Wagner We have not seen that many frogs either. This one IS pretty cool. It has a nice big interior to hold enough water for the flowers. Carol Fleischman received this woven pattern syrup pitcher for Valentine s Day. Although we have seen many woven shapes this one is a different variation. We took this picture when we had to move our collection to our basement when our living room and dining room were being painted. This represents about 2/3 of our collection. It took several hours to relocate it all to the basement. (Note the path to the electric box.) It took us over a day to wash and return everything to its place. I hope everyone enjoys the photo. Mary Ann Ulmann

15 Vol Page 15 SHOW & TELL Bev & Ernie while at Replacements Limited in Greensboro over Christmas I noticed a coffee pot by Liddle, Elliott & Sons. I am unable to identify the pattern. I am attaching two pictures but you may go to Replacements.com and type in Liddle, Elliott & Sons and it will show the coffee pot. Based on the water pitcher book it appears that the coffee pot is Plain Berlin? Boyd Payne We don t have many examples of Plain Berlin, but this relish/pickle dish on the right showed up and it indeed has the same characteristics as the teapot. The relish is incised with the name Plain Berlin. This oval Sydenham Shape sauce tureen which was listed on ebay piqued Carol Fleischman s interest. The acorn finial and C handles are not common to this Shape. The oval tureens do all have these features but they are reasonably rare. Someone pointed out to us this beaver plate on ebay. First thought was Dominion Shape but that was made by Baker & Co. and especially for the Canadian market. Cochran & Co, Glasgow, probably saw the great success in sales that Baker was having and designed a shape that would sell equally as well. We wonder if they succeeded

THINGS TO DO IN BALTIMORE You may wish to get to the Crowne Plaza early and/or stay after the convention to broaden your horizons by visiting some of the many wonderful landmarks of the City of Baltimore, among them the Walters Art Museum, Oriole Park at Camden Yards (baseball), Fort Mc Henry National Monument (save for our annual WICA trip!), Baltimore Museum of Art, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Sherwood Gardens, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum, the Inner Harbor (save for trip too!), and others. Various Baltimore websites offer you other specialties and restaurants worthy of visits. BALTIMORE BUS TRIP AND DINING Friday, May 3, 2013 All WICA attendees are warmly invited to join my husband Wes and me on Friday, May 3, 2013 for an exciting trip which involves a bus, Dodie (an 80 year old comedic tour guide), and cookies and candy, and an afternoon chance to be personally creative. I have just got to quote my new friend, Karen Salamon, owner of Greenspring Tours, Inc. Painted screens, marble steps, steamed crabs, the Star Spangled Banner... The inside scoop on what makes Bawlimer tick. Discover charming maritime neighborhoods in Fells Point and Canton... Baltimore is the birthplace of American railroading and Babe Ruth, Senator Barbara Mikulski and former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi and the final resting place of Edgar Allan Poe. Baltimore has a water front that spans 7.5 walkable miles. We leave the Crowne Plaza at 9AM on Friday, May 3, 2013 and via bus take in the Inner Harbor, Little Italy, Harbor East, Fells Point, Canton, Mount Vernon with historical and anecdotal highlights. We will visit the new Fort McHenry Visitors Center for a film and exhibits. That is the morning. There are several choices for your lunch time and afternoon arrangements. For me the afternoon must is the National Aquarium at the Inner Harbor. Wes and I plan to purchase tickets on line for the Aquarium in order to avoid waiting in a line for fifteen to thirty minutes. At this printing prices are Adult (ages 12-59) $29.95; Senior (60+) $26.95;Child (ages 3-11) $ There are many luncheon opportunities at the Inner Harbor. Wes and I will probably go to Lenny s Deli or Subway so that we can hurry to the Aquarium. Others may prefer a relaxing seafood luncheon at the Rusty Scupper, a great Inner Harbor restaurant with fabulous water views; the restaurant has an elevator. Afternoon choices are the Maryland Science Center, walking, a water excursion, shopping or people-watching your preference. If one wishes to visit the National Aquarium one will not be able to find time for the Rusty Scupper restaurant. Our bus picks us up at 2:30 at the Visitors Center for a return trip to the Crowne Plaza and a weekend of white ironstone, renewing precious friendships, fabulous speakers, an exhibit of Mason, Morley, Ashworth ironstone and abundant opportunities for ironstone viewing and buying. Bus tour is $35 per person, and lunch and any afternoon activity are additional. YOUR WEEKEND ACTIVITIES First Timers Dorothy Riley Chair Greenspring 3 May 3, :30-5:00PM. Dorothy will welcome, as do we all, WICA members who are attending their first convention. Social Hour/Cash Bar; Welcome Dinner; Program Greenspring 1&2 4:30-8:00PM. Meet friends, bend an elbow if you wish, dine, and hear historian and Davenport ceramics collector Frank Davenport, with the aid of slides, discuss the Confederate commerce raider the CSS Alabama and her large cargo of Davenport and other white ironstone. Wes and I highly recommend Frank, a charming and knowledgeable gentleman who recently visited us in our Delaware home. He likes English Breakfast tea and spice cookies! Frank is a native of London, England, now residing in Haddonfield, New Jersey. We learned a lot from him on patents, ceramics history, other ceramics clubs and the National Archives in Kew, London, England. You have to know what you re looking for! he advised. Show, Tell and Ask Patty Hurt and Rick Nielsen, Chairs Greenspring 1&2 8-9PM. This perennially popular duo presides at the entertaining Show, Tell and Ask. A collector gets to present a rare and sometimes gorgeous (sometimes not so!) iron-

22 stone item, or several. Perhaps the form or mark needs clarification, and many previous ironstone commentaries by presenters have created waves of laughter and teasing. It is always been a favorite of mine! Please Patty at ajhurtjr@sbcglobal.net to tell her what items you will present to the group. Please be prepared to send jpg formatted pictures to her address. Rick does a great job in projecting these jpg s onto a large screen for audience viewing pleasure. Speaking of rare, anyone have a miniature set of Elsmore and Forster s Morning Glory for me? Flea Market & Tops and Bottoms Greenspring PM. Boyd Payne chairs this event, the best chance in the world of finding a lid or other missing part for that lonely, unfulfilled ironstone item in your collection. If collection downsizing has been on your mind, the Flea Market is a timely opportunity for one to rent a table for a mere $18, which is payable via the convention registration form. Questions? Reach Boyd at bpaynejr@triad.rr.com or Raffle; Silent Auction -- To donate white ironstone to the raffle, which helps supports the Education Fund of WICA, Ernie Dieringer at dieringer1@aol.com or call To donate white ironstone for the Silent Auction, please Jim Miller at annemiller010@comcast.net or call him at PROGRAMS Greenspring 1&2. Saturday May 4, :30AM and 1:00PM. Our second esteemed speaker is Ms. Miranda Goodby, Keeper of Ceramics at the Potteries Museum at Stoke-on-Trent, England. On Saturday morning Miranda s topic is Beer Shops and Bread Riots. Changes in technology including limited introduction of steam power and increasing mechanization made a huge impact on the lives of potters men, women and children. Her lecture looks at changes in working and home conditions which included child labor, rising of unions and food riots. Slides will show how potters progressed in their production of beautiful ceramics items, despite privation and extremely limited opportunity for education and personal advancement. Saturday afternoon Miranda will speak on Mason, Etc., a discussion on the C.J. Mason factory. Quoting from the Mason Patent #3724 dated July 31, 1813 (200 years and 2 1/2 months from this weekend!): And be it remembered, that on the Thirty-first day of July, in the year of our Lord 1813, the aforesaid Charles James Mason came before our said Lord the King in His Chancery...whereas His most Excellent Majesty King George the Third did, by His Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, bearing date the Twenty-third day of July in the fifty-third year of his reign, give and grant unto me, the said Charles James Mason, His especial license, full power, sole privilege and authority... to make, use, exercise and vend my Invention of A Process for the Improvement of the Manufacture of English Porcelain. A copy of the Mason patent, graciously supplied by a librarian at Delaware s famous Winterthur Museum is in each registration packet for your enjoyment. Carol Fleischman s customary fine display, this year of Mason, Morley and Ashworth ironstone will amplify Miranda s presentation. Please be in touch with Carol at candf13@juno.com or if you can lend any white Masons, which is particularly desired. Saturday Night Social Hour/Cash Bar; Auction Preview; Banquet; Auction Greenspring :30-10:30PM. This year we welcome two new auctioneers from Cordier Auctions and Appraisals of Harrisburg, Pa. Member Ellen Bergner Miller (daughter of members Sue and Roland Bergner) and Dave Cordier are experienced in calling auctions of many kinds of antiques with much time spent with antique ceramics, and we welcome them to this perennial auction favorite. We do know that Ellen is a collector of ironstone; we do not know about Dave. A potential convert to ironstone perhaps? Sunday Sale; May 5, 2013 Greenspring :30AM. Rick Nielsen, chair of the Sunday morning sale, invites you to treat your eyes and brains to an astounding, magical assemblage of white ironstone every piece with a price tag, just longing to travel home with you. Dealer set-up is 7-9AM, and buyers are respectfully asked to wait until the door opens before they plunge into the ballroom. Dealers are asked to pay $25 for each table they rent and may pay via the convention registration form. New this year is a common table, hopefully several of them, available for you who are not typical dealers, but who have one or several white ironstone items for sale. Dealer for a Morning is your new title; take your item or items to the common table or tables, with large labels, clearly marked as to condition, final price, along with your name. Please supply your own wrapping materials. You do not have to linger at the table, which will be supervised by Jane and Wes Diemer; you will, however, have to return to the table at 10:30AM to claim unsold items and your checks. The Diemers are not responsible for misinformation as to condition, accident or any unforeseen problem. Payment to seller must be by check, since the Diemers will be unable to make change. Dealers for a Morning will be charged $5 per item, sold or unsold, which pays for table rentals. You will not find Dealer for a Morning info on the convention registration form. To register or ask questions please contact Jane at or pahbubba@comcast.net. Selling for a morning could be a lot of fun, so please give it a thought. I have a few things on my downsizing list too. A check to cover your Dealer for a Morning item or items ($5 each) may be made out to WICA, Inc. and sent to Jane M. Diemer; 2601 Cayuga Road; Wilmington, Delaware PLEASE SEE AND USE APPROPRIATE FORMS FOR REGISTRATION; SHOW, TELL AND ASK; AUCTION CONSIGNMENT AND SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE IN THIS ISSUE OF WIN. Many thanks to you all. Jane M. Diemer Our new auctioneers, David Cordier and Ellen Bergner-Miller.
