There it is... the teapot lid I have been searching for to complete my first white ironstone purchase so many years ago and which directed me to WICA. Page 10 of the recent Winter issue shows my beautiful teapot now known (to me) as Venitia Shape for which I paid $11.95 without the lid. (I do think the small thin lid may well have been thrown out with packing material by the seller.) I just know that a replacement lid has to be out there somewhere. Check out the Parts Wanted section for Marcia s needs. ************************************* Do you remember this conversation... or ing... about the Ridgway soup tureen I have? I think Ernie said it's called Gothic Rose or something like that. For the tureen display a few yrs ago, I know they assembled a 3pc from 2 collections. So, anyway, I just bought the matching covered vegetable today. Oh, my, it's really neat!!! I now have a 2pc covered veg and a 50-pc tureen w/ an underplate to match and a ladle I bought. Yup. this is the tureen that leapt to the floor, sadly.. I'm not letting go of it... I'll get it mended up somehow.. Also today I bought a Grand Loop chamber pot and lid. Wow.. heavy stuff! My 2nd JF piece!! Here are some of the 50+ pieces of my Ridgway, Gothic Rose setup...sigh. I can t bear to toss it. It has a lid and I bought a great ladle for it. Well, the pieces closest to the camera are lid pieces. So, here's wishing you a good spring. The seller obviously needed a lid for their lovely Classic Gothic vegetable tureen base but the only 10-sided lid available to them was a Boote s 1851 shape potty lid! ************************************* PRESIDENT S LETTER As I write this from snowy Pennsylvania my first thought is that someone should throttle our famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil. However, my next thought is that the WICA Convention will soon be here. That brightens my day. The Convention is always the highlight of the WICA year and gives us a chance to meet old friends, make new friends, and find some of our precious white stuff. I hope many of

3 you are making plans to be with us in Dover, Delaware. Adele Armbruster, the convention chair, and our Program Committee, have planned a full and exciting itinerary. The Nominations Committee has been working hard to produce a fine slate of officers and board members. Their results are published elsewhere in this issue of WIN. However, I must tell you that it is becoming increasingly difficult to find members who are willing to help in WICA governance. Remember, we only have three board meetings per year and two of them are wrapped around the convention. So, only one of them is at another time. Without belaboring the point, if you are able to serve on the board, please express your interest to any officer or board member. We would dearly love to have a backlog of interested members. It has been suggested that more should be done to keep members informed on what s happening in WICA. Minutes of board and annual meetings are posted on the website, but sometimes there is a time lag. We ll do our best to get minutes posted faster. In addition, I ll use this column to highlight important topics or items of concern. Think Spring and I ll see you in Dover! However, we have been unable to find a candidate for Treasurer. This important position cannot go unfilled. I recently informed the entire Board of the situation and highlighted several areas to pursue. I will be creating a Finance Advisory Committee to provide guidance and expertise to the Board and new Treasurer. Craig Mattice has graciously agreed to serve on this committee and I will ask others. It is clear that we need to examine how the responsibilities for WICA finances are managed and this will be the focus of the Finance Advisory Committee. WICA needs your help. 4 Page 4 Vol FLORA SHAPE aka bordered GOOSEbERRY Wedgwood & CO. (1860 to the present) was previously named Podmore Walker & Co. ( ) Geoffrey Godden writes that the Co. (in Podmore & Walker & Co.) related to their partner Enoch Wedgwood. It was found advantageous in the American market to use the name Wedgwood so from 1860 the firm was restyled Wedgwood & Co. Flora Shape was their first shape potted with the new style. Flora Shape was named Bordered Gooseberry by Jean Wetherbee before a marked piece was found. Collectors have since found a teapot and a soup tureen with an impressed mark. (See mark at right an oval garter with WEDGWOOD & CO. above FLORA SHAPE.) When first discovered Jean thought that they were two different shapes. There are three different variations of the motif on the flat wares. All have five divisions with a wavy edged scallop border aside the floral motif. Some motifs include gooseberries others have what appears to be only buds among the leaves. We suspect that the third version is the bottom one shown on this page. It has the larger more identifiable gooseberry which has been found more often than the others. It takes very close examination to see the differences. There are also variations on the pitchers and cups. (see page 5) The flat ware is bordered by leaves and blossom sprigs with five or six sprigs. The covered tureens have four wide and four narrow panels, with borders of leaves and dangling small sprigs.the handles are of nicely formed stems anchored by pairs of larger leaves. Although no dated patent registry mark has yet been found we surmise that it was first potted when the company changed names in 1860 or shortly thereafter. In spite of its beautifully proportioned form and superbly embossed detailed designs not a lot seems to have been marketed since and it is not easily found. We don t know of any collector that has gathered a representative number of pieces. Above: Typical gooseberries and their foliage.

5 Vol Page 5 FLORA SHAPE aka bordered GOOSEbERRY The above pitcher is possibly a hot water pitcher for the chamber set and has no pedestal foot. Also, it has a sprig with three gooseberries unlike the pitchers at the right. Note the decorative border on the top rim of the far right pitcher has an extra parallel line. 9 toddy bowl which matches the middle plate on page 4. Potty lid which goes with the top plate page 4. 6 Page 6 Vol FLORA SHAPE aka bordered GOOSEbERRY The earlier tea cup without handle, and far left, the handled cup and saucer. Syllabub cup. See the toddy or punch bowl on page 5. Above is an unusual tall cup (like a punch cup) but without the pedestaled foot. This wonderful shape is so gracefully proportioned. It is similar to earlier versions of Chinese Shape and Grenade. Note the three berries at the handles thumbrest. The gooseberry makes a charming finial. A teapot has been found marked FLORA, so there is little doubt about a mixup with Chinese Shape.

7 Vol Page 7 FLORA SHAPE aka bordered GOOSEbERRY The scalloped borders of the rim and foot of the soup tureen are lovely details as are the gooseberry finials and the scalloped handles with leaves. Note how the crossed branches are used with foliage and gooseberries on the tray handles. The three leaves shown on the lid above were once thought to be poison ivy and it was nicknamed so by some collectors. Vegetable tureen at right.

The relish handle uses the branch with leaves and a cluster of three buds along with the gooseberry. A rare find is this gravy boat. We wonder if it originally came with an undertray?

9 FLORA SHAPE SHAPE by JOHN ALCOCK Vol Page 9 We decided to include John Alcock s Flora Shape (reg. Feb. 7,1855) in this issue to help undue the confusion created by the same name chosen by two different potters. We are puzzled at how the Patent Registry Offices could have allowed the same name to be registered. The patent did protect designs for an initial period of three years. We are not sure that the names were included. Wedgwood & Co. (c.1860) didn t produce their version till at least five years later and since no dated registry mark has been found we wonder if Wedgwood even registered their Flora Shape. The two Flora Shapes are completely different in design. Alcock s version has much heavier embossing and is divided by incised lines into four wide and four narrow sections. Some pieces are surrounded with long leaves draped down the sides with beautiful long dangling sprays of flowers not unlike a wisteria. (see pitchers and tea set) Other pieces are bordered with leaves with a small dangling sprig. (see dinner set) There are a variety of finials (Buds, trumpet and open blossoms). The handles are vines.

10 Page 10 Vol FLORA SHAPE by JOHN ALCOCK The left teapot has a pedestal foot. The lid has a budlike finial and is inset. The one at the right has a very slight foot with a lid that rests on top of the rim and has an open blossom finial. These teaset pieces have four panels created by four narrower embossed panels draped with a dangling blossom sprigs with foliage. The sugar bottom left, matches the teapot above right. Its lid rests on the rim and has an open blossom finial that is wide open rather than trumpet-shape as on the teapot. At left is a punch cup and right is a waste bowl.

11 Vol Page 11 FLORA SHAPE by JOHN ALCOCK Below is a soup tureen bowl which is all we have found of the tureen. The embossing of the pattern on the bowl and handles is just beautiful.

12 Page 12 Vol TWISTED RIbbON James Edwards & Son registered this shape on March 21, The name of this attractive design - came from the twisted ribbon border (with a small flower sprig tucked in each swag). Many pieces have a slight but wide scalloped rim surrounding the round or oval body. The finials are lovely rose buds surrounded by appropriate foliage. The handles are twisted vines. The flat ware and covered pieces have eight or ten divisions with a slightly scalloped edge.. We suspect that not much must have been potted and it was not successful in the market unlike the very popular Lily of the Valley that preceded it in Members of WICA have only found the seven pieces on these pages. Four of them are from the chamber set and three from the dinner set. No tea set pieces have been discovered. Please look over your collections very carefully and let us know if you have a piece we have never seen. We are sure that there was a ewer and basin, to complete the chamber pieces (on page 13) and the tray for the sauce tureen (see below).

14 Page 14 Vol NEW & unusual Jim Kerr alerted us to a new (to us) importer s mark on a very plain mug. Very close to our upcoming convention. Another first, a 7 Sydenham plate sported this mark in black, under the glaze, mark. The plate looked pretty well used so it s hard to know if the condition that warranted this mark was because of a too soft impression or crazing. Basket insert for a coffee perculator. Assembled it is 7 high and 4 diameter. This is a 20th Century item but it is interesting that it was constructed in ironstone because it was probably considered antiseptic. We had looked at this mark for years but we really didn t see it. It appears mostly on high relief items like Babes in the Woods pitchers. Cork & Edge were in business in Burslem, Staffordshire from 1846 to They must have potted specificly for the U.S. market to use the American Eagle and the E Pluribus Unum phrase. The opposite tactic of the American potters who made marks that looked like English marks.

15 NEW & unusual Vol Page 15 Carol & Frank Fleischman recently found this great spittoon. The mark is Wm. Young Co., from Trenton New Jersey. Ironstone butter mold 3 1/2 high by 3 3/4 diameter. These molds are usually made of wood. Seen on ebay, a small Fig Cousin compote at 7 1/2 diameter and 3 1/2 high. Probably the smallest in a set of three.

It has a pair of covered Vegtable tureens, a pair of bakers, and a stack of four graduated platters. Standing in the back is the largest piece, a 6 ½ X 5 ¼ well and tree platter. There are pairs of gravy boats and 4-piece sauce tureens, a grand 4-piece soup tureen and large stacks of soup bowls and plates. As if that s not enough, see the very rare wine cooler. We are told by the collectors, Bonnie & Bob Hohl, that they also have this set in flow blue which includes a compote plus two small relishes! Perhaps this white set is missing those pieces.
