1 2009 Collection of Daylilies Dublin Elaine (Joiner, 1987) Arcadian Daylilies 72 Hendrick Ave. Toronto ON M6G 3S $2.00

2 July 2009 Our 2009 Collection of Daylilies Spectacular Bloom & Outstanding Performance! This is turning into what may be described as the best bloom season ever. Our 20 years of selecting cultivars is paying off with the finest collection of Daylilies we know of. Spring development has been excellent with more and better scapes than we have ever seen. Cool nights have caused some of the bloom to be a little slow opening in the morning but the quality, size and colour is the best we have ever produced. Mail-orders are shipped as bare root plants from May until September. If you live close enough to pick up plants, many of our cultivars are available as Container Grown plants that may be planted anytime without losing a beat. Look farther through the catalogue for a list of cultivars that are available in 2 gallon containers. Our divisions are larger than the competition and we find it amusing how often other Daylily sellers buy our plants and openly tell us how they divide them to resell. In our 2 gallon containers, we aim for small clumps guaranteed to bloom this year, some of them have a dozen or more fans. Our one gallon Clearance plants continue to be extremely popular, and we will be adding to this collection through the season. Where else can you get mature double fans or better for $3.50? Pickups may be arranged in our home garden (central Toronto), our Etobicoke garden, or our Hamilton Garden (on the west mountain). Just send an or give us a call to make arrangements. We hope we can be of service. Sandy P.S. Arcadian Daylilies will again be supporting the 4 th annual JDRF Perennial Plant Sale in the spring of Watch our web page in January for our 2010 Daylily catalogue and watch for information about the 2010 JDRF Perennial sale.

Hybridized by the father of the modern Daylily, A. B. Stout, and registered in 1935, Dauntless is the only one of Stouts cultivars to receive the Stout Silver Medal (named after Stout himself). Very wide petaled for a daylily of its era, with a few ruffles and a rudimentary but very round eyezone, Stout insisted that daylilies needed to add beauty to the garden even when they were not in bloom Dominic (Williams J 1984) HM 86 $12.00 Semi Ev EM Tetraploid dark red/black self with light yellow throat Dublin Elaine (Joiner 1987) $12.00 Dormant M Reblooms Diploid Anyone looking for August bloom needs to consider Dublin Elaine. Registered as mid season, we would call it Mid-Late in our gardens, starting the middle of July and blooming through August into the early part of September. A little taller than most, DE will stand out in the Late summer garden. This attention getting, warm pink double is definitely a contender for the most vigorous and most prolific bloomer in a mature clump. DE is both a bud builder and a rebloomer that puts up new scapes before the primary scapes are finished, resulting in 6-8 weeks of bloom. We have long held Enman Joiners doubles in extremely high regard - This is a 1 st choice daylily see photos on cover and Feature Cultivars page. The clear Lavender colour seems to be what sells this beauty. We have grown this for many years, but have never had enough to offer it in our catalogue because garden visitors are always begging to take it home with them. Elizabeth Salter (Salter J. 1990) $17.00 AM 98, HM 95, Stout Silver Medal 2000 Semi Ev 22" 5.5 M Reblooms Tetraploid Super heavy substance, Warm ruffled pink, ES is destined to become one of the all time greatest daylilies. If Jeff named this after his wife he must have thought it truly worthy so do we an excellent performer Emperor s Choice (Benz 1991) $10.00 Dormant 24 5 M Tetraploid We love the show that EC puts on in August. Late blooming, starting the end of July or the beginning of August, EC grows in a gorgeous mound of clear green foliage with clusters of ruffled, brilliant lemon yellow blooms nestled just at the top of the foliage. Can t be beat for August bloom. Emperor s Dragon (Munson 1988) HM 93 $14.00 Evergreen 26" 5" M Reblooms Tetraploid ED is perhaps Bill Munson s most underrated introduction, fabulous performer in our garden. Exquisite bright silvery mauve with plum eyezone. Lush, vigorous and prolific bloom. Evergreen foliage lasts until winter.

Lavender midribs and pale gold throat make this an exquisitely interesting near white spider. Registered with ratio of 5.6:1 consistently very narrow petaled. Choice Wedding Band (Stamile 1987) SSM 1996 $15.00 Semi Ev M Tetraploid cream white edged yellow with green throat. Fragrant White Perfection (Stamile 1995) $25.00 Semi Ev ML Reblooms Tetraploid Near white self with green throat. Fragrant. Absolutely stunning big tet with heavy substance & bold presence. White Temptation (Sellers 1978) HM 82, AM 85 Semi Ev 32 5 M Diploid $10.00 Choice - One of the best Near White s, with a lovely green throat. We have found WT to be one of the really fine daylilies for simple beauty. Nice form, lightly ruffled, clear colour. This is the latest blooming near white in our garden although only a couple weeks after the mid season cultivars. Nocturnal Wineberry Candy (Stamile 1990) AM 97,HM 94 Semi Ev EM Tetraploid $14.00 orchid with purple eyezone and green throat. Fragrant Word of Honor (Joiner 2003) $49.00 Evergreen ML Reblooms Tetraploid From Enman Joiner s line of Tulip Shaped doubles, WOH usually holds the cup shape of the outer petals and sepals until late in the day. Occasionally the sepals will fold down while the petals remain upright enclosing the intensely ruffled center petloids. A dusky wild rose, the colour becomes a little more dusky as the day progresses. Foliage is big and blemish free we actually consider it to be some of the best looking early spring and late season foliage in the garden. Bloom starts in our gardens the last week of July and continues until mid September.

13 Shipping Policy Mailorders are shipped by Canada Post Expedited Parcel on Mondays and Tuesdays so that they will not spend the weekend in the post office. Most orders within Ontario and Quebec are delivered in one or two days and to other provinces usually 3 or 4 days. Shipping and Handling for Ontario and Quebec is a flat rate of $10.00 per mailorder and for the rest of Canada $ Upgrading to Xpresspost delivery is available at additional cost please enquire for details. Size of Divisions Arcadian Daylilies are shipped as minimum double fan divisions. Most are shipped as much larger divisions if we are not in danger of selling out. We find it amusing how often other daylily sellers buy plants from us and openly admit they divide our plants into multiple division before reselling them. We sell larger divisions! If you like the size of our plants, please tell your gardening friends. We try extremely hard to meet your delivery requests and the vast majority of orders are shipped at the time requested. Shipping priority is given on a First-Paid-For- Basis, which simply means that early season orders will be given preferential scheduling over later season orders. Our month of May is very hectic with family and friends working hard to get as many orders out as quickly as possible. If you provide an address with your order we will confirm shipping date, and notify you with a tracking number when your plants have left. If there are dates that we should not ship let us know and we will accommodate them. Planting your Mail-order Daylilies Daylilies recover easily after being bare-rooted and mailed, however there are a few tips that will help. Soaking the roots in a dilute water soluble fertilizer solution overnight, or at least for a few hours will rehydrate the plants and provide a bit of nourishment for a rapid start. Fertilizer solution of about ¼ normal strength is good. Composted organic matter dug into the soil around the new plant will help amend any soil, adding ability to retain water to sandy soils and adding porosity to clay. First watering with a high Phosphorous fertilizer (middle # i.e ) will assist root establishment. And finally, keeping your new plants well watered the first few weeks will help ensure success. Pickups of container grown plants take far less of our time and can often be arranged on short notice. Phone or to arrange to pick up plants. Drought and Stress Resistance At Arcadian Daylilies we use as many innovations as we can, to grow bigger, better and healthier plants for our customers. For several years we have experimented with the use of Mycorrhizal fungi in our potting mix. Now, every plant we grow is grown with Mycorrhizae. Mycorrhizal fungi form a symbiotic relationship with the host plant they live on. They colonize the roots of the plant with the host providing carbohydrates to the fungi. The fungi grow in part into the roots of the plant, but also grow hyphae into the soil surrounding the root. These hyphae allow the Mycorrhizae to draw moisture and nutrients to the roots for easy absorption, resulting in a benefit to the host, particularly in stressful conditions. The result is a plant that will have greater resistance to drought and other stresses including transplant shock. The biggest benefit with Mycorrhizae will be seen when plants are grown with irregular watering cycles, or in poor nutrient depleted soils. These are naturally occurring soil fungi that in some gardens may already be present, however in poor soils or depleted soils, the use of plants grown with Mycorrhizae will ensure faster establishment and better performance. Our results with Mycorrhizal fungi in container grown plants have been so impressive that we now include Mycorrhizae when our plants are lined out in the ground as well. This means not only better growth in our gardens but faster establishment and better performance when the plants arrive in your garden. Trust Arcadian Daylilies to be the leader with innovation.

14 Container Grown Plants Container Grown plants may be planted any time through the season, including in full bloom, without losing a beat. If you live close enough to pick up Container grown plants you should consider the list of cultivars available now, or pay us a visit during Bloom Season to see what tickles your fancy. Container grown plants are too large and heavy to ship by mailorder cost effectively, but our bareroot plants recover quickly and most do bloom the first year. Daylily Selection Over the years we have visited many gardens and evaluated many many plants before bringing a selection home, to trial in our Ontario gardens. We have become very discriminating about the plants we grow and even more so about the cultivars we offer for sale. In the rush to bring new cultivars to market many breeders focus on single elements without providing an entire plant that is noteworthy. Ask about our environmentally friendly methods of growing our containers including Water Management, Nutrient Recovery, Symbiotic Inoculants and Biological Pest Predators. Our 2 Gallon Container Grown plants are the best we have ever grown. With massive root systems, most are small clumps, some with a dozen or more fans. These are spectacular value!!! One Gallon Clearance Plants As we sort through our gardens there are odds and ends, misnamed and overstocked plants that we are putting into 1 gallon containers and clearing at very attractive prices. Perfect for a landscape planting, these plants are rapidly becoming our best sellers. A mix of double fans, triples, quads and better, these will transplant easily and will bloom the first year. Most are named daylilies, although some have lost their names and a few are misnamed. Many have been in containers several years or longer proving how tough these cultivars are. These plants would be perfect for a larger planting where the criteria is good hardy plants in a variety of heights, forms and colours. Guaranteed Healthy Guaranteed Double fans or better Take 1 20 your choice $5.00 ea your choice $4.00 ea Take 51 or over $3.50 ea Daylily Rust Our Gardens remain rust free. Evidence seems to indicate that Puccinia hemerocallidis (Daylily Rust) will not survive Canadian winters. Rust has become largely a non issue for the average Canadian collector. We are often disappointed in new introductions that provide the seller with an incredible catalogue picture (sometimes referred to as a mug shot) but really do not grow well, or impress when in the garden. Our objective is Spectacular Bloom & Outstanding Performance We want every one of our plants to bring butterflies to your stomach when they bloom for you. Our selection criteria is done on many factors including but not limited to Vigor, Hardiness, Exceptional Beauty, Colour Intensity, Exquisite Form, Budcount, Branching, and Uniqueness. We ve selected and culled to the point that every one of our plants is exceptional. We believe our 2009 Collection of Daylilies are the best Daylily cultivars ever offered for Canadian Gardens. Garden Visitors Garden Visits are by appointment only. Please or phone so we can find a mutually convenient time. While we are happy to have visitors to the garden, we are not set up as a retail outlet and do not accommodate unannounced visitors. Plant Pickups can be arranged at our home garden (central Toronto), at our Etobicoke garden (QEW & 427) or in our Hamilton (West Mountain) garden.
