12 Roses (Rosa) - Thorns Generally Discouraged Plants Barberry (Berberis) - Thorns Hollies (Ilex) There are soft hollies which have slow growth. Please do not choose to plant the fast-growing, sharp-leaved varieties. Please refer to the lists above for small, soft textured selections. Loropetalum The larger varieties do not keep their shape and require pruning 3 times per year. There are smaller varieties to more easily fit the landscape. Please refer to the lists above for those selections. Vines These should be planted in containers to keep growth in check. Examples include ivy, creeping fig, winter creeper, or any kind of vigorous trailing plant. Any plants that are too large/too fast-growing Please consider mature size prior to purchasing and plant accordingly. Any plants with sharp leaves and/or thorns Trees that mature over 50 in height are too large. There are smaller selections on the list provided.
13 A few tips for your success Right plant, right place. Consider mature size before purchasing. Note how much direct sunlight is received in the location you want to plant before purchasing. Full Sun = 6+ hours of direct sunlight per day Part Sun = 4 hours of direct sunlight per day Part Shade = 4 hours of direct sunlight per day Shade = early morning sunlight is usually okay but no direct sunlight otherwise. Fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials. Happy Gardening! This information was provided by Wilkerson Garden Design.
