Our fruit nursery lies at an altitude of above 1000 feet, amongst the Radnorshire hills of east Wales. It has unsurpassed isolation from other fruit growing areas and the very healthy conditions allow us to grow many of our stocks organically. In the past this has been a traditional livestock rearing farm and so is in excellent heart. We still have sheep and cattle and this allows us to naturally maintain fertility, to use long rotations and to utilise our permanent pastures and hill grazing. Our family started growing nursery fruit bushes in the 1960s and when we found that other types of soft fruit grew so well here, we increased our range to include all the major types. We have a wide range of strawberry plants and fruit bushes (now all organically grown), and raspberry canes, many of which are also organic. We buy in the parent stocks at the highest health status available, to ensure that our plants are the healthiest possible. We multiply our own parent stock wherever possible to give us control from the earliest stage. The raspberry canes, strawberry plants and parent bushes are entered into the Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS) and are health inspected at intervals throughout the growing season. They have passed their first inspection at the time of printing. We take great care of our plants throughout the seasons. We believe that by reducing any stresses on the plants (and animals) a lot of the common problems can be reduced. The stocks are grown at altitude and our customers tell us that the plants respond rapidly to softer environments and establish quickly. Our customers too have been impressed by the vigour of the plants and the quality of their root systems. Our organic plants are grown on our registered land and certified by Organic Farmers and Growers. We are pleased that we can produce the quality plants in such a sustainable way. Strawberry Plants Being members of several fruit breeding programmes we have access to many of the new improved varieties, but we also continue to grow some of the old favourites that rightly maintain their popularity. We hold one of the largest ranges of blackcurrant varieties including many of the new, much improved, more disease resistant Ben varieties. Grug Farm Being on the edge of several different habitats (heather moorland, ancient woodland, traditional grassland and small areas of wetland), the biodiversity is unique. It is good to be able to encourage the wildlife on the farm. We have recorded over 50 species of birds seen here, from redstarts to red kites and we have a very diverse flora too. We are fortunate to have a local, skilled team of people who work with the plants all year round. It is their dedication, in all weathers, together with careful day-to-day management, that ensures the high quality of our plants. Throughout the growing season we rely on hand hoeing, weeding and cultivation to keep the crops clean and to reduce the stress on the plants. Through the autumn, winter and spring, the plants are lifted, hand-selected and carefully packed ready for despatch. We use a 24-hour delivery service or Royal Mail First Class post to ensure the plants reach you in prime condition. Welsh Fruit Stocks is a small family business and our customers can be assured of a caring, personal service. We have been supplying gardeners with top quality plants since 1991 and have many very satisfied customers all over the country. There is a strong demand for our plants so to avoid disappointment please order early. Hoeing Blackcurrant Bushes

STRAWBERRY PLANTS (PHPS Elite or A certificate) ORGANIC *VIBRANT very early season NEW! Vibrant has an upright habit and produces attractive, glossy berries. The sweet and juicy fruit is dark, regular in shape and a good size. It is moderately resistant to Powdery Mildew but susceptible to Verticilium Wilt. It is well suited for 60-day cropping and may need fleecing to protect early flowers. CHRISTINE very early season An early variety that produces a firm, large, bright orange-red berry with excellent flavour. The only early variety to have resistance to Verticillium Wilt; it also has good Mildew resistance. It can be susceptible to Crown Rot and Red Core and may need fleecing to protect early flowers. HONEOYE early season This is still the main early variety which has a good upright growing habit. It seems to perform particularly well in the north and the west. Lovely flavoured fruit, great for freezing, but best picked regularly. It can be susceptible to Mildew when under stress. Suitable for protected cropping. HAPIL mid season Hapil produces heavy yields of very large, glossy, sweet fruit and has a vigorous and upright growing habit. It crops especially well on lighter soils and in drier conditions. It can occasionally be susceptible to Mildew and Verticillium Wilt. Suitable for protected cropping. STRAWBERRY PLANTS (PHPS Elite or A certificate) ORGANIC *ALICE - mid season Bred at EMR, it has a very long picking season, and an upright growing habit. The fruit is large, sweet, juicy and evenly sized. It has excellent disease resistance, particularly to Verticillium Wilt and Crown Rot, and has good Mildew resistance too. Great for organic growing. One of our favourites! CAMBRIDGE FAVOURITE mid season One of the well-known older varieties, still earning its place because of its reliability and tolerance. It makes a good beginner variety. The fruit is paler than the modern varieties but the juiciness and sweet flavour makes it a favourite for many and it s great for jam making. Its dense growing habit makes it more susceptible to Botrytis in wet seasons. PEGASUS mid season Probably one of the best disease-resistant mid-season varieties, preferring slightly heavier soils. The fruit is of a high quality, juicy and with excellent flavour. It has strong resistance to Verticillium Wilt, Crown Rot and Red Core but some susceptibility to Mildew when under stress. *ELEGANCE - late mid season Elegance produces consistently high yields of attractive, sweet, firm, bright and juicy berries with good shape. It has some resistance to Crown Rot and Verticillium Wilt, but can be susceptible to Mildew and Red Core. The flavour is best when the fruit is fully ripe. It is suitable for 60-day cropping.

STRAWBERRY PLANTS (PHPS Elite or A certificate) ORGANIC *FENELLA - late mid season A vigorous, compact, upright plant, which produces large bright berries with uniform shape; it has an excellent sweet flavour and is juicy too. The fruit has very good weather resistance - it is known to survive in a wet summer! The plant has very good resistance to Verticillium Wilt and Crown Rot, but it can be susceptible to Mildew when under stress. *SYMPHONY late season A high-yielding, Scottish variety producing bright red fruit with good flavour. Very good disease resistance, especially against Red Core and Vine Weevil, but can be susceptible to Mildew. It seems to excel in damper conditions. Good for organic growers and suitable for field and protected cropping. *CUPID - NEW! late season An exciting new EMR variety that produces attractive, glossy, bright orange-red fruit with a uniformly conic shape and excellent flavour. Resistant to multiple diseases, including Verticillium Wilt, Crown Rot, Powdery Mildew and Black Spot. Some degree of fruit rain tolerance has also been noted, which is an advantage for a late season variety. STRAWBERRY PLANTS (PHPS Elite or A certificate) ORGANIC *FLORENCE - late season A popular EMR variety producing outstanding, vigorous plants with large, bright, juicy red berries with a lovely sweet flavour. Excellent disease resistance, especially against Powdery Mildew, with some resistance to Verticilium Wilt, Vine Weevil and rabbits too! It does well in drier and hotter areas and/or seasons. A must for the organic grower. *JUDIBELL exceptionally late season Judibell has a unique cropping slot which extends the picking season well into August, and produces sweet, juicy berries of uniform shape. It has good disease resistance to Verticillium Wilt and Crown Rot, but some susceptibility to Powdery Mildew when under stress. Because of its late season, it remains dormant until May. It can tolerate wetter conditions and is great for organic growing. ORGANIC STRAWBERRY SELECTION Save 10% off normal list price A selection of early, mid and late season plants for a full season of fruiting

RASPBERRY CANES (PHPS A' certificate) ORGANIC MALLING JEWEL early mid season This wellestablished, traditional variety has stood the test of time and is known for its old-fashioned, juicy fruit that hangs well and has a lovely flavour. The canes have good disease resistance and are tolerant of most growing conditions. We highly recommend it as a garden and as an organic variety, or for first-time raspberry growers. *GLEN AMPLE mid season A popular variety with spine-free canes. It produces conical, bright red fleshy fruit of excellent flavour which hangs well. It is a heavy cropper, and can produce a large number of spawn, so a good feeding regime is recommended. It has some tolerance to Root Rot, but can be susceptible to other diseases. Good for protected growing. *GLEN DOLL late season A new selection from JHI in Scotland. Spine-free canes with high yields of large, sweet, very conical and well-presented fruit which also freezes well. It has a long cropping period, continuing until early mid August. Its excellent disease resistance makes it good for organic growing. *OCTAVIA very late season This EMR variety extends the cropping period well into August; a useful extension to the season before the autumn fruiting begins. Very high quality fruit with large, firm berries and great flavour. The spiney canes are moderately vigorous with good disease resistance and exceptional winter hardiness, but they can be susceptible to Root Rot. AUTUMN BLISS autumn season An easy-to-manage primocane with wonderfully flavoured fruit of medium size, usually cropping from August until the first hard frosts. A firm favourite for many gardeners. The short canes can be grown in a bed system on a sheltered site with minimal supports. It excels in damper conditions and is resistant to Root Rot. Highly recommended for organic growing. *AUTUMN TREASURE autumn season A primocane that crops from August until the first hard frosts. Its bright fruit is long and conical in shape with good flavour. Resistant to Verticillium Wilt, Powdery Mildew and Root Rot. The weathertolerant upright and spine-free canes can be grown in a bed system with minimal supports. Recommended for organic growing. CONVENTIONAL *GLEN FYNE - early mid season This promising Scottish variety has a long picking season and high yields. It has firm, bright berries with the best sweet and aromatic flavour. It is moderately vigorous, with tall, spine-free and easily managed canes. It has good disease resistance, but avoid planting into soil where Root Rot has been a problem. TULAMEEN late season The variety with the highest quality fruit and a long picking season. Easily managed tall canes with few spines produce very large conical, aromatic and juicy fruit. It can be susceptible to cane diseases, but has some resistance to Botrytis. Bred in Canada it has good weather and winter hardiness, but, due to its height, it benefits from a sheltered site. *JOAN IRENE autumn season A vigorous, spine-free primocane that crops from late August or early September and continues until the first hard frosts. The fruits have a bright, medium colour and good flavour. The canes are taller than other varieties so may need support at a greater height. Based on trials experience in the UK, Joan Irene does not appear to have any particular susceptibility to pests and diseases.

New! *CHUCKLEBERRY BUSHES ORGANIC Two-year-old bushes late mid season The Chuckleberry is a new and very exciting addition to our fruit family, bred by Chas Welch in Norfolk who crossed a redcurrant with a gooseberry and Jostaberry (itself a hybrid of a gooseberry and blackcurrant). The result is a blackcurrant-like bush that produces high yields of dark, superbly flavoured, attractive, versatile berries in mid-july. The berries make fantastic red jams and jellies, with flavours of all three fruits in their parentage. It has great potential for gardeners and food producers alike. We are selling the Chuckleberry in memory of Sian, who passed away in September 2011 after more than 20 years running Welsh Fruit Stocks with husband Nigel. We will make an annual donation of 10% of your purchase price to Macmillan Cancer Support and cancer charities. We hope you will have a smile, or maybe even a chuckle, whatever the outcome

Discounts will be given on larger orders. Please enquire. All prices quoted are ex nursery and delivery charges must be added (unless plants are collected directly). Please see Delivery Charges below. THE PLANTS All the plants we sell are grown here on our nursery. All of our plants are all supplied as bare root plants and they will need immediate attention on receipt. Bare root plants have many advantages over potted plants and provided that they receive careful attention over the first few weeks they should establish quickly. We believe the health and character of our plants to be good. The raspberry canes and strawberry plants have all been entered into the Ministry Plant Health Propagation Scheme (PHPS) and have been inspected for trueness to type and health on at least two occasions through the growing season, and have passed all the inspections. The bush fruits have been grown from our PHPS certified parent stocks and we have carefully managed and inspected them on a very regular basis throughout the growing season. We ensure that all the plants leave us in perfect condition and they are packed to withstand three-four days in transit, but please examine them on receipt, and inform us if you are at all concerned. We do our very best to send you healthy plants, and you should expect healthy growth. However, as in nature, very occasionally some can fail. If this does occur, and you have followed all the instructions in our planting guide, you may contact us to discuss possible causes and replacements (as the season allows). The acceptance of an order does not constitute a contract to supply. Orders are accepted conditionally upon plants being available, subject to crop and certification. We endeavour to constantly assess the availability of plants, but in the event that we are unable to complete an order then we have the right to cancel the order without incurring any further liability to you. In this case a full refund of the plants and postage will be given. Very occasionally, for example, at the end of the season, we may need to substitute a variety of plant for one which we consider to be similar. If you do not want us to do this please notify us when ordering.

Some Fruit Facts Strawberry Plants are of the genus Fragaria, grow close to the ground and produce trifoliate leaves from a central crown. They produce runners (new plants) which can be removed to encourage fruiting or grown on to create a strawberry bed. Remove flowers/fruit in year 1 to help new plants establish. A good crop of fruit is expected for two-three years, although with a good home, they can last five or even six years. Planting Distance: 40-45cm (16-18 ) apart on a 1m (3 ) row Raspberry Canes are of the genus Rubus. Their multifoliate leaves grow on a single cane. The canes can grow fairly tall and can be spiny or spine-free, depending on the variety. Each year the raspberry roots send up new shoots (or suckers) from the ground. For summer fruiting varieties, this will be the fruiting cane for the following year. For autumn fruiting varieties (primocanes) this cane will produce fruit the same year. Grow best in well-drained soil, they do not like clay or waterlogged sites. Planting Distance: 45-55cm (18-22 ) apart on a 1.5m (5 ) row Gooseberry Bushes (Ribes). They produce large round berries that are green on culinary varieties, or red on dessert varieties. The older branches on the bush are tough and woody, whereas younger growth is tender and green. They can be spiny or almost spine free. Gooseberry bushes will grow sporadically if left alone, so pruning back to required size during the winter months is highly recommended. Blackcurrant & Chuckleberry Bushes (Ribes). They are a woody bush, with fairly straight shoots, growing on the growth from the previous year and also sending up new shoots from the base of the bush (the stool). The fruit is produced on the wood from the previous year, so the bush does not want to be cut down each year, but pruned to remove older growth and to maintain fruit production. They will fruit second summer after planting, but an autumn planted Chuckleberry may fruit in year one. Red and White Currants (Ribes). They grow in a similar way to a gooseberry bush, although they are not spiny, and produce very small berries on long strings. Fruit is produced on both the young and the old wood. The fruit is great for making jelly, juice and wine. Planting Distance: plant gooseberry and currant bushes 1.2m apart, and Chuckleberry bushes at 1m apart. Rhubarb is a rhizomatous perennial whose stems ( sticks ) are grown as a vegetable but they are used mainly as a dessert. It crops over a long period, is completely hardy and grows in any fertile garden soil as long as it is well drained and in full sun. Crowns ( sets ) can be cropped for ten or more years, though division may be necessary after about five years. Plant crowns in November or December although planting can continue up to the beginning of March. Plant the crown with the growing point at, or just below, the soil surface. On wetter soils planting with the buds just raised out of the soil may help prevent rotting. Planting Distance - If planting more than one crown, space plants 1m (3ft) apart, with 1-2m (3-6ft) between rows Great British Bred Unless mentioned in their descriptions, our varieties are bred in the UK by specialist breeders who carefully select desirable characteristics and cross them to create new cultivars. We are proud to be able to display these Great British Bred trademarks. find out more on our website.
