Expect white flowers in spring, with many cultivars varying in color available. It is an excellent habitat plant providing winter shelter for birds while it's flowers attract butterflies and bees. Howard cinn has some of the showiest flowers of the anzanitas, blooming in large clusters of light pink or white during late winter into early spring. ature plants can be pruned to reveal their elegant branching structure. L A large fast growing variety with large ovate light green leaves and clusters of small white Arctostaphylos edmununsii 'Winterglow' Arctostaphylos manzanita x densiflora Austin Griffith Arctostaphylos pajaroensis 'Warren Roberts' Winterglow anzanita edium Evergreen Austin Griffith s anzanita Large Evergreen x Warren Roberts anzanita edium Evergreen 2' x 6' L A smaller low mounding variety with bronze new growth. 6' x This larger cross of anzanita is one of the best wildlife plants out there. It's flowers in January and February attract not only Butterflys, bees and hummingbirds but Chipmunks and other birds as well. In the fall It produces edible berries which are a favorite for all sorts of little critters. Warren Roberts gets slate blue leaves in summer with coppery new foliage in spring and pink tinged flowers in the winter. Aristida purpurea Purple Three-awn Grass Grass 2'- x 1'-2' L A fine textured native grass, it is quite showy when the sunn illuminates its flowers in the summer and fall. Artemisia californica Canyon Grey Canyon Grey Coastal Sage Low ounding 1'-2' x 8'- L This small quick growing plant provides a wonderfull color and texture to a garden, filling in spaces and making an excellent spill-over border. While it does flower, it's flowers are inconspicuous. Artemisia californica ontara' ontara Coastal Sage Low ounding 1' x 2'- L One of the smaller Artemisias available. Artemisia Powis Castle Powis Castle Wormwood Low ounding 2'- x 4'-6' Powis Castle grows a little taller and not quite as wide as it's californica cousins. Baccharis pilularis 'Pigeon Point' Pigeon Point Coyote Bush Evergreen Calamagrostis foliosa Leafy Reedgrass Cool season bunchgrass 18"-24" x 6'- 9' A low undulating spreading plant, coyote brush grows quickly and provides excellent wildlife habitat. Some birds such as wrentits and white-crowned sparrows will spend there entire lives in stands of coyote brush. 1'-2' x 1'-2' /Shade This Reedgrass has wonderfull arching blue-green foliage, often with purple highlights. Ceanothus Frosty Blue' Frosty Blue Ceanothus edium to Large ounding 8'- x - This larger lilac produces wonder blue and white frosted flowers in early spring, giving it it's name. It has smaller slightly rectangular leaves and small clusters of light to medium blue This cultivar's handsom foliage character and wonderful flowers makes it an excellent larger groundcover. Younger Specimens make for an excellent larger shrub while older specimens can grow into amazing multi-trunked canopy trees. A bulbous plant that forms clumps of 1-2 foot long strap like leaves in winter through mid summer. It gets its name from the juices of its bulb which was used by early european settlers as soap. This vine provides a wonderfull spring a fall show. In the spring it blooms with small white flowers with yellow stamens. In the fall seed heads with long feathery tails look fantastic when backlit by the sun. This low growing subshrub has small aromatic dark-green oval leaves, and produces bright tubular orange flowers from summer into fall. Corethrogyne filaginifolia 'Silver Carpet' Silver Carpet Sandaster Low growing perennial 1' x 6'-8' L Silver carpet stays less than a foot tall but can spread up to 8 feet. Once it is established however it will reward you with brilliant uniform yellow flowers year round. Dudleya is a solitary or slowly clumping succulent with a beautiful inch wide rosette of chalky white leaves. In late spring to early summer 1-2 foot long spikes blush red and open with yellow Erect flower stalks rise 1-2 feet above the foliage in late summer and are topped with tightly congested clusters of spikes of wheat-colored Spreading through rhizomes, new plants emerge bright green but quickly turn blue as they grow. This tough and fine textured species of wild rye is an excellent plant for habitat as well as bioswales and restorations. It spreads through rhizomes and can easily form large mass plantings. California Fuschia flowers from mid to late summer through fall, providing nectar for birds at a very important time. It's flowers are an orangish red. A widely distributed fairly common cool season grass, Idahoe Fescue flowers in the spring on 1-2 foot tall stems that are occasionally a blushed pink or rose. It flowers in late spring and summer with creamy white clusters of Heuchera 'Canyon Belle' Canyon Belle Coral Bells Small 5" x 10" Heuchera 'Genevieve Genevieve Coral Bells Small 2'- x 2'- Iris douglasiana Bert s Blue, Canyon Snow, Pt. Reyes Douglas iris Small Clumping 12"-18" x 1'- 2' Iris PCH Pacific Coast Hybrid Iris 1'-2' x 2'- L Isocoma menziesii var. sedoides Prostrate Golden Bush Small 1' x 2'- VL This small perrenial has a mounding from of glossy dark green leaves. It flowers in mid spring with with red tinged stems of rich red flowers growing to 18" tall. Larger and more sun loving than Canyon Belle, Genevieve's leaves are marbled with grey and it's flowers are deep pink with white centers. The Douglas Iris is a vigerous plant naturally occuring in in moist and shaded grassland slopes. It flowers most commonly in the spring with showy blue-purple flowers though there are many cultivars with a variety of colors available. The pacific coast iris is often considered one of the most beautiful to be found with wonderfull large elegant any different cultivars can be found in a variety of colors. This common seaside bush makes a wonderfull evergreen ground cover and an excellent butterfly plant. It throws up yellow flowers in summer through fall. Lavandula stoechas Otto Quast * Otto Quast Spanish Lavender Rounded 18"-24" x 2'- Otto Quast' has the showiest flowers of all the lavenders, developing large purple brachts that grow out of the top of the flower heads. Lavatera assurgentiflora alva Rose Evergreen 8'- x 8'- alva Rose is quite a rare shrub with showy blossoms and a bold texture. In early spring to fall it blooms in rose to light magenta. Lupinus albifrons Silver Bush Lupine Evergreen -5' x -5' VL Silver Bush Lupine is another great Butterfly plant with showy blue spikes of flowers appearing in spring. arislea vestita Water Fern Fern 1' x spreading imulus aurantiacus (Diplacus) Sticky onkey Flower Small Evergreen 2'- x 2'- imulus bifidus 'Junipero Sera' Junipero Sera onkey Flower Small Evergreen 12"-18" x 12"-18" This aquatic fern can be planted in water up to 9" deep or in moist soil. The onkey Flower is known as one of California's most deer proof shrubs. Though the species is rather loosely defined, it generally produces light orange flowers in spring, through the color can range from yellow to red depending as they hybridize incredibly easily. L This monkeyflower is silimar to it's cousin aurantiacus but smaller in size. imulus guttatus 'Dwarf' Dwarf onkey Flower Herbacious 8"-12" x 8"- 12" H This dwarf monkeyflower is the smallest of the genus. It is normally founder in higher water environments such as seeps and by shallow streams. It has lighter yellow onardella villosa Coyote int 1'-2' x 2'- VL Coyote mint gets light purple clusters of flowers in summer. It is a an excellent butterfly bush and can be deer proof as well. uhlenbergia rigens Deer Grass Evergreen Warm Season Grass 4'-5' x -6' Excellent as both a specimen and in larger groups, Deer Grass' tightly packed shoots often can resemble a fountain of leaves, with tall flowering stems held stiffly verticle. 3
4 Penstemon grinnellii scrophularioides Grinell s Northern Penstemon 2'- x 2'- A great bird and butterly plant, the penstemon puts on quite a show in spring with it's orange Penstemon heterophyllus Foothill Penstemon 1'-2' x 1'-2' Similar to Grinell's but with deep purple Penstemon heterophyllus 'Catherine de la er' Catherine de la er Penstemon 1'-2' x 1'-2' This cultivar has slightly blue flowers compared to the native foothill penstemon. Penstemon spectabilis Gorgeous Penstemon -5' x -5' L Spectabilis has lavender flowers and is one of the larger penstemon's available. Phormium aori Queen * New Zealand Flax Evergreen 4'-6' x -4' Pityrogramma triangularis Goldback Fern Fern 1' x Polypodium californica California Polypody Fern Fern 1'-2' x 1'-2' VL Pt. Sh./Shade Pt. Sh./Shade A lovely upright example of New Zealand Flax with wonderful purplish bronze and green streaked leaves. This fern has dark green fronds and it's underside is coated with a yellowish powder giving it its name. While it will go dormant without summer water be careful how much you give it. It needs good drainage. Polypopdium is a creeping fern that grows naturally in moist rock crevices. It likes wet feet in late winter and early spring. They go dormant as the ground dries out. Rhamnus californica Coffeeberry Large Evergreen -18' x -18' Showy red berries in the fall give this bush it's name. In addition to providing a fall show, these berries also attract many birds and small mammals. Rhamnus californica Eve Case Eve Case Coffeeberry Large Evergreen 8'- x 8'- /Pt.Sh. Slightly smaller than the regular coffee berry with slightly darker and rounder leaves. Rhus ovata sugar bush Large Evergreen or Low Branching Tree Up to 35' x 20'-25' A workhorse of the garden, the sugar bush can be clipped as a small bush or hedge or it can be let to grow into a taller screen or dense shade tree. It produces pink flowers in the spring. Ribes aureum gracillimum Golden Penny Golden Penny Currant Deciduous 6'- x 5'- 7' This shrub provides great early season color. Flowers in mid-winter occur in bright golden yellow, maturing into yeloow to orange and black berries which attract birds in the spring. Ribes malvaceum 'Christy Ridge' Christy Ridge Chapparal Currant Deciduous 5'-6' x 5'-6' VL Smaller than it's cousins, this currant has fuzzy light green aromatic foliage and dense arching 3 inch clusters of bright pink and white blossoms. Ribes sanguineum glutinosum Gooseberry Deciduous 5'- x 5'- /Shade Gooseberry is an amazing bird bush. It flowers in the spring with flowers held in pendulous clusters. It produces edible berries in the fall, though the seeds can be bitter. Romneya coulteri atilija poppy Semi-Evergreen Herbacious 6'- Tall This poppy produces 5-10 inch wide white flowers with yellow centers, the largest of any california native plant. Although they can be finicky when younger, they become quite vigerous with age. Rosa californica California wild rose Deciduous x -9' L /Shade Salvia apiana White Sage Evergreen 2'-6' x -6' Salvia 'Celestial Blue' Celestial Blue Sage Evergreen -6' x -6' L The Wild Rose of most of california as the name suggests. It flowers with pink 1"-2" flowers which turn into rose hips which make quite a lovely tea. The white sage produces wonderful white and slightly lavender flowers in summer. It is an excellent bumblebee and hummingbird plant, though it seems to give other bees fits as they cant quite fight their way in and out very well. This sage has some of the largest flowers of the genus. The blue purple flowers can stay for over a year on a happy plant. Salvia clevelandii 'Allen Chickering' Allen Chickering Cleveland Sage Evergreen 4'-5' x 4'-5' L This sage gets 2' long flower spikes of deep lavender flowers in late spring and summer. Salvia leucophylla 'Amethyst Bluff' Amethyst Bluff Sage Evergreen 6'- x - 15' L This large native sage gets 12 inch vivid purple-pink flower spikes in spring. It attracts birds, bees and butterflies. Salvia 'Shirley's Creeper' Shirley's Creeper Sage Evergreen x 6' L ounding with age, this sage is an apperent hybrid of the native black sage. It flowers in spring with cream-white colored 4

Sh./Shade Hedge Nettle blooms from april to august with 1/2" pink It is favored by butterflies and hummingbirds if they can reach it, providing nectar through spring and summer. Stipa lepida (Nassella lepida) Foothill Needlegrass Bunch Grass 1'-2' x 1'-2' VL Stipa pulchra (Nassella pulchra) Purple Needlegrass Bunch Grass 2'-4' x 1'-2' VL Styrax officinalis Snowdrop Bush Deciduous -9' x 2'-6' L Native to the foothills of california, this grass is likened as the redwood of the grass world. In ideal conditions it can live for more than 100 years. This grass is similar to the foothill needlegrass, growing slightly taller and with a greyer cast to it's foliage. A good bird garden plant, this shrub is similar to the mock orange. It has one inch white flowers that can be quite showy.
