2 Evergreens / Conifer #401 - Arborvitae Thuga Green Giant (standishii x plicata) A vigorous growing, pyramidal evergreen with rich green color that remains outstanding throughout hardiness range. It has no serious pest or disease problems. Height and width: To 60 feet tall with a foot spread at maturity; 30 feet at 30 years seedlings - $7.00 per pack of 5 #402 Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) A deciduous conifer. Foliage is spirally arranged along the stems. Fall color is a rich brown. Tolerant of most soils, but prefers moist soil. Fast growth rate at maturity. #404 - Jack Pine (Pinus banksiana Jack pines range from 9 22 m (30 72 ft) in height. Some jack pines are shrub-sized, due to poor growing conditions. They do not usually grow perfectly straight, resulting in an irregular shape similar to pitch pine (Pinus rigida). This pine often forms pure stands on sandy or rocky soil seedlings - $7.00 per pack of 10 #405 - Norway Spruce (Picea abies) Planted for windbreaks, landscape and Christmas trees. Reddish-brown bark, dark green foliage and heavy spreading branches that droop and almost touch the ground. It thrives in average soil conditions but prefers moisture. Of the spruce, needle retention is the best in the Blue Spruce. Does well in most soil conditions except real wet. We reserve the right to make minor changes in stock if some species of trees become unavailable. We will accept orders through March 19, 2012 or until our supply is exhausted. The seedlings are bare root stock. Each packet is dipped into a preservative gel to keep the roots moist and then placed into a plastic bag. The seedlings should be planted as quickly as possible after pick up to assure their vitality. Seedlings are 2 to 4 years old. Each packet can easily be carried in one hand. Several packets will fit into an ordinary paper grocery bag. If you are unable to pick up your seedlings, please send someone or phone the office at to make special pick up arrangements. Orders not picked up within one week after the original pick up dates will be considered abandoned. A phone call to our office will usually result in a satisfactory alternate pick up plan. *The District is unable to guarantee or refund money for plants which do not survive under any circumstances. 3 #441- Marking Flags HELPFUL PLANTING SUPPLIES Fluorescent lime green colored marking flags help you keep track of your seedlings. (Individual flags may be purchased on tree pick up dates for $.25 each.) $10.00 per bundle of 50 Care of Seedlings on Arrival Tree seedlings require water and cool temperatures to survive until planted. If you intend to plant the trees within 2 days, keep them in the package in a cool or shaded location. If planting will be delayed longer than 2 days, open the package and make sure the roots and packing material are damp. Reseal and store the package in a cool place, periodically checking the condition of the trees roots. Do not allow the roots to dry out. The longer you wait to plant the trees, the fewer the number that will survive, regardless of the care given in storage. Large Shade / Ornamental #406 Beech American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) The American beech is a tall and wide tree. The mature tree size is anywhere from 90 to 100 feet tall, and spreads 50 to 70 feet. The bark that grows on the tree is very smooth, pale and gray. And is conspicuous in the woods for holding it s leaves through winter. 18 seedlings $8.00 per pack of 3 #407 Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) Valuable timber tree that prefers deep moist soil. Nut producer, straight trunk with round top crown, bright yellow fall color. (allelopathic). Height at maturity. 2 seedling $9.00 pack of 5 #408- Buckeye The Ohio (Aesculus glabra) State tree of Ohio may grow to 70 feet and a diameter of 18 to 24 inches but is usually smaller. Yellow flower clusters in the spring, nuts in the fall. The wood is light and soft. 4 Large Shade / Ornamental #411 Thornless Honeylocust (Gleditsia triacanthos) A fast growing ( tree when young ) growing 2 or more a year over a 10-year period. This deciduous tree is tolerant of drought conditions, high ph, and is salt tolerant. They are an excellent lawn tree for filtered shade. The fine small textured leaves casts a light shade and usually do not need raking in the fall. Height foot seedlings $8.00 per pack of 5 #412- Oak Swamp White (Quercus bicolor) This tree is much like that of the white oak in appearance but naturally grows in wet, heavy, clay soils. The leaves are wavy, dark green, shiny above with grayish fuzz beneath. The acorn occurs in pairs requiring only one season to mature. The wood is hard, strong, tough and used for similar purposes as the true white oak ft. at maturity. A great wetland species. 18 seedlings- $9.00 per pack of 5 #413 Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) In the sun Pawpaw trees develop a narrow pyramidal shape with dense, drooping foliage down to the ground level. In the shade it grows tall, with a more open branching habit, horizontally held leaves, and few lower limbs. Plant at least two trees for cross pollination. Height at maturity. 12 seedlings $9.00 per pack of 5 # 415- Northern Red Oak #414 American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana ) grows up to thirty feet tall. It can have one or more trunks, each a foot wide. The leaves of this tree grow to four inches long and two inches wide. They are simple leaves with a pointed tip and teeth on the edges. These leaves turn orangish-red in the Fall. and are usually an understory tree, meaning they grow beneath larger trees, such as oaks and maples. They also grow alongside streams. 18 seedlings $9.00 per pack of 5 (Quercus rubra), also known as common red oak, eastern red oak, mountain red oak, and gray oak, is widespread in the East and grows on a variety of soils and topography, often forming pure stands. 5 Flowering Shrubs / Hedge Plants #430 Common Witchhazel (hamamelis Virginia) is a small, native tree featuring fragrant yellow flowers appearing late in the season, from October to December depending on the weather and it grows nearly anywhere from open areas to groupings. This tree will tolerate full sun or shade, is tolerant of urban conditions, and prefers a moist soil- it is best to avoid extremely dry situations.. 12 seedlings - $8.00 per pack of 5 Large Shade / Ornamental #416- Shagbark Hickory, (carya ovata) a slow-growing but potentially massive tree located in all of Ohio, prefers deep, moist, rich, well-drained soils under sunny conditions, but is often found in the dry upland soils of woods or fields because of its superior drought tolerance. It tolerates the shade of nearby trees when young, when its branching is upright and spindly and it first develops its deep taproot system. 12 seedlings- $7.00 per packet of 3 #431 Weigela florida (Pink) Is a bushy fully hardy perennial deciduous shrub with pink flowers in late Spring and early Summer. It grows well in semi-shade and direct sun, and prefers medium levels of moisture. 18 seedlings - $8.00 per pack of 5 #432 - Spice Bush (Lindera benzoin) A fairly common large shrub (sometimes a small tree) of streamsides and bottomlands. The simple, entire, alternate, deciduous leaves are extremely aromatic. The small yellowish flowers are one of the first flowers to appear in the spring, before leaf-out.. 12 seedlings - $9.00 per pack of 5 #417 - Chinkapin Oak (Quereus muehlenbergii) also known as Yellow Oak or Yellow Chestnut Oak. It grows to 60 feet tall by 80 feet wide when found in the open, often with wide-spreading lower branches of great diameter, It frequents dry, upland sites, but makes its best growth on rich, deep bottomlands. 12 seedlings- $8.00 per packet of 5 #418 - Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua) Native tree with leaves 3 to 5 inches long, star shaped and six-pointed. Turns a pale orange to deep red in the fall and when crushed gives off a fragrant odor. 6 Large Shade / Ornamental Flowering Shrubs / Hedge Plants #421 - Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) Large, showy white,very fragrant trumpet-shaped flowers grace the Catalpa in late spring. Its narrow crown is oval-shaped or uneven, upright with distinctively large, heart-shaped, bright green leaves and long, bean -like pods. Grows to 40'-60' with a 20'-40' spread. 12 seedlings - $8.00 per pack of 5 #426 Dwarf Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) Red buckeye s lavish carmine flowers come early and are an important source of food for hummingbirds in the months before most other plants are in flower. Leaves are dark green on short crooked branches. Height 18 at maturity. 12 seedlings $8.00 per packet of 3 #422 - Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) grows between 40 and 50 feet tall. They have pyramidal-shaped crowns when they are young, but they develop a rounded or asymmetrical shape as they mature. Sassafras trees have deeply ridged reddish-brown bark and alternating mitten-shaped leaves that change to yellow, red or orange in the fall. They produce small yellowish flowers in early summer 12 seedlings - $8.00 per pack of 5 #423 - American Chestnut Hybrid (Castanea dentata x) A fast growing hybrid reaching a height of 80 to 100 feet. Best planted in full sun in well drained soil. Although both male and female flowers can be produced on the same tree, they need another American Chestnut for good pollination and nut production. Therefore, you should plant a minimum of two trees. This hybrid should start producing rich, flavorful, edible nuts in about 13 to 15 years 1-2 seedlings - $7.00 per pack of 3 Flowering Shrubs / Hedge Plants #424- (Hazelnut) American Filbert (Corylus americana) Known for its tasty nuts the Hazelnut tree will reach 15 feet tall and 15 feet wide. Grows well in most soils and in full or partial sun. The best nut production occurs in full sun. 18 seedlings- $8.00 per pack of 5 #427 Hydrangea PeeGee (Hydrangea paniculata) is a common American garden plant and highly valued for its vigor and bloom dependability. Sterile flowers appear in August and remain on the plant until the first hard frost. The large conical shaped white flower heads turn to pink in the fall with gray-green leaves. 18 seedlings $8.00 for pack of 5 #428 Redbud Eastern (Cercis canadensis) Native to the eastern part of the United States, the Eastern Redbud is a small tree with multiple trunks at the ground or a short single trunk that branches out close to the ground.redbuds are a handsome tree that produces ascending branches from the top of the canopy. The leaves are large, heart-shaped.
