12 Lambley Meadow Garden Mix This is how we plant out our annual meadow. A key reason for this approachl is to reduce the presence of weeds among the flowers we prefer to grow. Dig the garden bed. Rake it level. Lay a 5cm deep mulch of composted pine bark, clean weed-free soil or compost over the bed. Mix the seed with fine dry sand as poppy seed is very light and will not spread well. Sow a meadow seed mix onto the surface of the mulch. Don t cover the seed at all as poppies will not germinate if not exposed to light. Keep the surface of the mulch moist at all times until germination takes place. Stand back and wait for a brilliant late spring early summer display. 16 Pollen Free Sunflowers Patio Sunflowers are the result of many years of hard work from an Australian flower breeder and represent the latest innovation in sunflower breeding. Average height in a pot is 25-40cm; in a garden 30-45cm. They like space in a garden, to allow side branches to develop fully similar to taller branched hybrids. Growers can also nip out primary bud or flowering head to allow side buds to come on. They are easy to grow in a pot but planting out in garden beds is effective too. Each flower also lasts much longer in the garden than older varieties. I generally plant sunflower seed 1cm deep from November until January but October wouldn't be too early and in warmer gardens seed can be planted in September. They don't need a lot of extra irrigation and are happiest in full sun.

I worked for him on weekends and during school holidays from the age of 12 until I was 15 when my parents moved away from the village. Seeds would be sown in drills in seed beds during late spring and early summer and would be planted out into the nursery field during late summer. My job was to keep my cousin Eric supplied with the seedlings which he manually planted at an astonishing speed. The seedlings were dipped in sooty water first and then I would lay out the plants, evenly spaced, next to a taut string line. We worked from early morning through to the evening taking our tea breaks squatting in the paddock. My great aunt Lizzie would bring a thick jam sandwich wrapped in newspaper and an enamel mug of hot, strong, sweet milky tea out to the field where we were working. We didn t wash, this would have meant wasting time on a long walk back to the sheds, but the newspaper protected the sandwich from the mud and soot which caked our hands. After planting out, the wallflowers would make a spurt of growth before winter set in. During a mild spell in early spring they would be dug, have the soil shaken from them and tied into bundles of a dozen, dipped into a trough of water, wrapped in newspaper and taken to market. Once planted in gardens they would burst into flower and fill the air with their sweet fragrance during spring and early summer. These field grown wallflowers would make huge plants in their final home, much too big to inter plant with tulips the way we do it here at Lambley. The award winning Sunset strains of wallflowers are more and more taking over from older varieties in Europe and North America. Compact, sturdy and vigorous and consistently flowering true to type they are now available in a great range of colours.

From seeds which were direct sown on the 24th of August we started pulling golf ball size baby beets in early November. These roots were round and smooth with a fine tap root and excellent colour throughout. From the same sowing we pulled and cooked Zeppo every week from November until the 25th January. The last roots were huge, weighing in at 700grams each, but still, when cooked, had good colour throughout with no zoning and were tender with no hard core. Zeppo has fewer embryos per seed than other beetroot varieties and doesn t need thinning. It is also exceptionally slow to bolt. To be honest it has never bolted here at Lambley no matter when we sow the seed. Rijk Zwaan is a Dutch family and employee owned seed company which has its Australian headquarters in the Victorian Central Highlands hamlet of Musk where extensive research is carried out. Extensive seed production activities in Musk and surrounds support the local and overseas markets. Cooking Beetroot In a saucepan cover the beetroots with cold water and bring to a boil. Turn heat to simmer. Don t add salt at this point. Simmer until the roots are tender with no crunch but not flabby. This can take from 20 minutes for small beets and up to 90 minutes for very large ones. When cooked take off the heat and whilst running each one under cold water slip the skin off and cut off tail and the rough top. Small beets can be just cut in half or quarters but large beets are cut into 2cm or so dice. Whilst hot add salt to taste and then just enough balsamic vinegar to coat the beets. Toss until coated. Add extra virgin olive oil and toss again. Let the flavours amalgamate for an hour or two before serving. The last roots were huge, weighing in at 700grams each, but still, when cooked, had good colour throughout with no zoning and were tender with no hard core.

36 Hybrid versus Heirloom Tomatoes Most if not all heirloom tomatoes have very little disease resistance. I ve written before about the many diseases that afflict tomatoes and the need to grow varieties which have high resistance to the major tomato diseases. Most if not all heirloom tomatoes have very little disease resistance and it must also be said most if not all seedlings sold by the big box stores and garden centres also have very poor disease resistance. Seedling growers who supply the big box stores and the garden centres are under enormous pressure to sell their plants at the cheapest possible prices so they can t afford to buy top quality seed. Let s take Roma tomatoes as an example. You can buy 1000 open pollinated generic Roma tomato seeds for $3. The best, most productive, disease resistant and flavoursome varieties, Katya F1 and Sheena F1 for example, grown by commercial tomato growers cost 35 times more. Why would hard-nosed commercial growers, who have to work incredibly hard to survive in the cut-throat world of vegetable production, pay a premium for Katya and Sheena seed when they could buy generic Roma seed for a fraction of the price? It s not always the seed quality which causes problems for the home vegetable grower. Planting into the same part of the garden two years in a row is not a good policy. Saving tomato seed will be a problem unless the tomato pulp and seed is fermented. Merely drying the seed on paper is asking for trouble as the seed itself can carry several diseases. Since I stopped growing heirloom tomato varieties in the garden and planted modern F1 hybrids instead I ve had bumper crops every year. Tomato Cherry Bite F1 Good flavour Cherry Bite has really good flavour combined with good disease resistance. It has larger size fruit to 20g each. A top quality commercial tomato. This was because this melon takes up to 125 days to ripen which is problematic in our area where there are spring frosts as late as the third week in November and autumn frost as early as the end of April. Watermelons need to grow, flower, set and ripen fruit within 90 days to be of any use here in the Central Highlands of Victoria. Most commercial crops of watermelon grown nowadays are seedless and whilst these don t have the flavour of seeded watermelons they are the types that the supermarkets insist on getting. To set seedless watermelon fruit a pollinating variety is needed. These pollinators are distinctly different in size and looks from the seedless ones so as not to get them mixed up at harvest time. In the past pollinators were not harvested so they didn t have to be good eating but recently seed breeders have developed varieties that have great flavour. We sow the seed of melons individually in 7.5 cm pots in early October in one of our poly-tunnels and plant them into the open garden after the danger of frosts is over in late November.

40 In my own garden I rarely harvest the whole heads but pick individual leaves as required.
