2 Working on the Hill is an amazing opportunity, but it certainly has its challenges. For example, how do you maintain a healthy lifestyle in the busy, stressful environment of the United States Congress? The Physicians Committee wants to help. We have compiled a list of restaurants within walking distance of the House and Senate that have multiple healthy, inexpensive options for lunch or dinner. Whether you are in the mood for a veggie burrito, an Asian stir-fry, or even vegan macaroni and cheese, there is something for everyone here. Washington may still be known as a meat-and-potatoes town, but these restaurants show that vegetarians and other health-conscious individuals can feel right at home just steps away from the Hill.

3 A Guide to Veg-Friendly Fare on Capitol Hill House-Side Restaurants HUNAN DYNASTY 215 Pennsylvania Ave SE Numerous options, including a General Tso s Bean Curd, Eggplant in Hot Garlic Sauce, or Vegetable Spring Rolls. Go lighter with a Combination Vegetable Dish with Bean Curd with no added MSG, salt, or oil. SONOMA 223 Pennsylvania Ave SE The menu changes regularly, so ask about the day s offerings. Options include an Endive Salad (radicchio, endive, and arugula with a black pepper citrus vinaigrette) or an Arugula Salad (arugula, red grapes, pine nuts, and a vincotto vinaigrette). For heartier appetites, try the Mushroom Burger with grilled onion and arugula (hold the pesto, which is cheese based). YOUNG CHOW 312 Pennsylvania Ave SE Start with edamame or a seaweed salad, then check out the extensive vegetarian meat section with 13 different options including Mock Beef with Cashews, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and Kung Pao Beef. Or you can always try the simple and delicious Steamed Veggies and Tofu with different sauce options. 4 Senate-Side Restaurants SUNRISE CAFÉ Union Station Their menu changes weekly but always includes several vegan options. And your order includes an entrée with two sides. Entrée options may include curry tofu chicken, vegan beef and broccoli, or soy fish in their signature tomato and coconut gravy. Side options include sweet fried plantains, vegan mac and cheese, collard greens, and stewed okra. KYOTO 201 Massachusetts Ave NW Start with Tofu Gyoza, a dumpling served with sesame sauce or fried purple potatoes. Specials include Yakisoba (soft noodles stir fried with vegetables and tofu) served with a salad and miso soup or Kawarti Tofu (3 pieces of tofu encrusted with sesame seeds, almonds, and panko). There are also maki rolls with avocado, pickled radish, or #veggiecaucus DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS PIES Union Station There is a rotating mix of savory pies, sweet pies, and quiches, with usually one vegan option for each. Options include vegan chili and tofu curry (both savory pies) and a roasted veggie quiche. Eggplant in hot garlic sauce at Hunan Dynasty

5 UNION PUB 201 Massachusetts Ave NE Fried Zucchini Sandwich (zucchini, tomato, onions, and jalapeno chimichurri) or a Black Bean Veggie Burger with avocado and smoked tomato relish. There is also a salad aptly named The Herbivore (spring mix, cucumbers, tomatoes, apples, tomatillos, pecans, and vinaigrette ask for no cheese). Seaweed salad at Young Chow TOSCANA 601 2nd St NE Toscana has a handful of salads on their menu, including their House Salad with balsamic vinaigrette, Grilled Corn and Orzo Salad with cucumbers, peppers, and coriander in a passionfruit dressing, or a Sweet Potato Salad with scallions, celery, and fi gs in a balsamic vinaigrette. You can also add grilled veggies to any of the above. For dinner, try the Maltagliati whole wheat pasta, roasted tomato, olives, and capers. Toscana serves orzo salad with grilled corn in a passionfruit dressing.
