LUCKEN/MESNER - DETAILED PLANT GUIDE NAME ON MARKER Acorn Squash Alberta Spruce Annabelle Hydrangea Asiatic Lilies Astilbe Asylum Bamboo Black Raspberries Blueberries Boxwood Broccoli Butterfly Bush DESCRIPTION Acorn squash (Cucurbita pepo), so named for its shape, comes in a variety of colors and can be a welcome addition to any gardener s table. Acorn squash belongs to a group of squashes commonly known as winter squash; not because of their growing season, but for their storage qualities. In the days before refrigeration, these thick skinned vegetables could be kept through the winter, unlike their thin skinned and vulnerable cousins, the summer squash. This dwarf version of the white spruce grows to a maximum of about 10 to 12 feet with a spread of 7 to 10 feet but does it very slowly growing just 2 to 4 inches per year. It is generally grown as a large shrub or small specimen tree. Specific epithet comes from arbor meaning tree in reference to the similarity of this shrub to a small tree. 'Annabelle' is a smooth hydrangea cultivar which features much larger flowers than the species. It is a deciduous shrub with a rounded habit which typically grows 3-5' tall Bulbs of the Asiatic lily must have the winter chill to produce big blooms. Plant the bulbs three times as deep as the height of the bulb, with the flat end down, then mulch lightly to retain moisture. In spring, plant short annuals around the lily bulbs to shade them. Astilbe plants have long-blooming, plume-like flowers in soft shades of white, pink and red. The flowers are held on tall, stiff stalks, above the airy foliage. Astilbes are one of the easiest perennial flowers to grow, but they give a high return. The low-growing foliage is covered by flowers for much of the growing season. Sweet Alyssum (Lobularia maritima) is very easy to grow, from plant or seed. It is a cool season flower that can be set out in early spring. In frost-free climates, Sweet Alyssum can also be grown throughout the fall and winter. Bamboos are a group of woody perennial evergreen plants in the true grass family Poaceae. Some of its members are giants, forming by far the largest members of the grass family. There are 91 genera and about 1,000 species of bamboo. They are found in diverse climates, from cold mountains to hot tropical regions. Raspberry is the name given to two plant species in the genus Rubus, Rubus idaeus (red raspberry) and Rubus occidentalis (black raspberry) grown for their edible fruit. Raspberry plants have perennial root systems and biennial stems which are known as canes. Blueberries are perennial floweringplants with indigo-colored berries. They are classified in the section Cyanococcus within the genus Vaccinium. Vaccinium also includes cranberries, bilberries and grouseberries. Boxwood is an evergreen (the species name sempervirens means always green ) shrub or small tree that belongs to the family Buxacece. It usually grows to 12 or 15 feet when it is left undisturbed. Boxwood produces a lot of pollen and blooms early which makes the plant very attractive to bees. Broccoli, Brassica oleracea, variety italica, form of cabbage, of the mustard family (Brassicaceae), grown for its edible flower buds and stalk. Broccoli is a fast-growing annual plant that grows cm (24 35 inches) tall The Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii) is a beautiful, fast-growing, deciduous shrub with masses of blossoms long, seductively spiked trusses that bloom from summer to autumn. The flowers come in many colors, though butterflies prefer the lavenderpink (mauve) of the species to the white and dark purple cultivars.

Cabbage Cantaloupe Cauliflower Celery Chives Clematis Cucumber Daisies Day Lily Dogwood Eggplant The cabbage plant, Brassica oleracea, is an herbaceous annual or biennial vegetable in the family Brassicaceae grown for its edible head. There are many different varieties of cabbage which include the white and red cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) and the savoy cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. sabauda. Cantaloupe (muskmelon, mushmelon, rockmelon, sweet melon) or spanspek (South Africa) is a variety of the Cucumis melo species in the Cucurbitaceae family. Cantaloupes range in weight from 0.5 to 5 kilograms (1 to 11 lb). Originally, cantaloupe referred only to the non-netted, orange-fleshed melons of Europe, but may mean any orange-fleshed melon of C. melo. China is the world's largest producer of cantaloupes, providing half of the global total in Celery (Apium graveolens) is a marshland plant in the family Apiaceae that has been cultivated as a vegetable since antiquity. Celery has a long fibrous stalk tapering into leaves. Depending on location and cultivar, either its stalks, leaves, or hypocotyl are eaten and used in cooking. Chives, scientific name Allium schoenoprasum, is an edible species of the genus Allium. Its close relatives include the garlic, shallot, leek, scallion, and Chinese onion. A perennial plant, it is widespread in nature across much of Europe, Asia, and North America. Clematis is a genus of about 300 species within the buttercup family, Ranunculaceae. Their garden hybrids have been popular among gardeners, beginning with Clematis jackmanii, a garden standby since 1862; more hybrid cultivars are being produced constantly. They are mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin. Most species are known as clematis in English, while some are also known as traveller's joy, a name invented for the sole British native, C. vitalba, by the herbalist John Gerard; virgin's bower for C. viticella and for C. terniflora; old man's beard, applied to several with prominent seedheads; leather flower for those with fleshy petals; or vase vine for the North American Clematis viorna Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a widely cultivated plant in the gourd family, Cucurbitaceae. It is a creeping vine that bears cucumiform fruits that are used as vegetables. There are three main varieties of cucumber: slicing, pickling, and seedless.... Many different types of cucumber are traded on the global market. A Daisy flower is composed of white petals and a yellow center, although the flower can sometimes have a pink or rose color. Daisies are not made of just one flower. A daisy is made up of two types of flowers - disk florets and petal-like white ray florets. The crown is the small white portion between the leaves and the roots. Along the scape of some kinds of daylilies, small leafy "proliferations" form at nodes or in bracts. A proliferation forms roots when planted and is often an exact clone of its parent plant Dogwoods can be planted in full sun or partial shade, though partial shade is best (morning sun in particular). Dogwoods are typically an understory tree in the wild. Because eggplant really needs warm soil to grow well, gardeners in cool climates often do best growing the plants in large, darkcolored containers.... Eggplants grow into tall, angular plants, so they should be spaced 24 to 36 inches apart.

Elephant Ear Caladium English Ivy Espalier Pears Fennel Grape Vines Green Apple Hinoki Cypress Horseradish Hosta Impatiens Colocasia esculenta, commonly called elephant's ear, is a tuberous, stemless, frost-tender perennial of the arum family (see also calla lily and jack-in-the-pulpit) which typically grows 3-6' tall and as wide. For gardeners, it is primarily grown as a foliage plant with huge, heart-shaped to arrowhead-shaped, conspicuously-veined, downward-pointing, peltate leaves (to 2' long) on long, stout, succulent stems. As the common name suggests, each leaf purportedly resembles an elephant's ear. Calla lily-like flowers with yellowish-white spathes and spadixes are infrequently produced and usually hidden by the foliage when they do occur. This species is also commercially grown as a food crop in Hawaii (poi is made from the tubers) where it is commonly called taro. Hedera helix, commonly known as English ivy, is a vigorous, aggressive, fast-growing, woody evergreen perennial that is primarily grown as a climbing vine or trailing ground cover. As a climbing vine, it may over time grow upwards to ' in height. Espalier training trees. Training apples and pears asespaliers is a space-saving way of growing fruit on a wall or fence. They require little pruning once established and are attractive in blossom and fruit and architectural during winter. Ornamentals such as Pyracantha are sometimes trained as espaliers. Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, is an herbaceous perennialplant in the family Apiaceae grown for use as a herb or flavoring. Thefennel plant is an erect herb with 4 5 hollow stems and distinctly divided feathery foliage. The leaves are simple and linear and are 2 15 cm in length. High climbing vine, with stems up to 35m long in the wild but usually cultivated at around 1 3m. Bark flaky. Tendrils growing opposite leaves. Leaves palmately lobed, hairy/bristly on underside. Flowers form in dense panicles that develop into bunches of berries ( grapes ). Pollinated by wind, insects and self-pollination. The apple is a small tree that can reach 25 feet in height with a crown spread of 25 feet. The leaves are simple, oval in shape, have small serrations along the margin, and are arranged alternately along the branches. A typical leaf is 2 5 inches long, inches wide, and has an acuminate tip (Petrides 1972). The twigs, buds, and undersides of the leaves usually have white pubescence. The bark is brown and scaly and mature trees in the park can have a trunk diameter of up to 24 inches. Showy, white, five petaled blossoms, often tinged with pink, are found on the tree in late spring. The flowers are pollinated by bees and other insects. The pomaceous fruits mature through the summer and become ripe and ready to eat in the fall. Ripe apples range in color from green to yellow to red or a mixture of these colors. Hinoki-cypress is a graceful spreading tree with branches that droop at the tips. The small cones and attractive red peeling bark add winter interest. There are a number of dwarf and compact cultivars available and add nice accent in the garden. Horseradish, Armoracia rusticana, is an herbaceous perennial plant in the family Brassicaceae that is cultivated for its large, edible root. The leaves of the plant grow in a distinctive rosette pattern sprouting from single or multiple stems. Hosta plants are a perennial favorite among gardeners. Their lush foliage and easy care make them ideal for a low maintenance garden. Originating in the Orient and brought to the Europe in the 1700s, today there are over 2,500 cultivars with such variety in leaf shape, size and texture, that an entire garden could be devoted to growing hostas alone. While hosta care is considered easy, it helps to know a little bit about how to grow hostas to help the plants reach their full garden potential. Impatiens walleriana, commonly called impatiens or bizzy Lizzy, is the most popular annual bedding plant in the U.S. today. For easy-togrow, non-stop flowering in shady conditions, it has no equal. It is a bushy, succulent-stemmed tender perennial that grows in a spreading mound to 6-24 tall depending on variety.

Iris Japanese Red Maple Kentucky Wonder Bean Kiwi Knockout Roses Lilac Liriope Milkweed Moss Rose Onions Ornamental Grass Peony Pumpkin Pyracanthus Hedge Iris is a genus of species of flowering plants with showy flowers. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. The Japanese red maple lends a sense of grace to any space. The dash of red is a welcome addition in yards and parks across the U.S. The first specimen of the treereached England in 1820 and was named Acer palmatum after the hand-like shape of its leaves. Kentucky Wonder is a brown-seeded bean noted for its exceptional flavor and its heavy crops of 9" green pods, borne in clusters. Pods are oval, thick, gently curved, meaty and tender, and they're stringless when young. Kiwi, Actinidia deliciosa, is a deciduous climbing vine or shrub in the the family Actinidiaceae grown for its edible fruits. The plant is vigorous and woody with nearly circular leaves which have long petioles and are alternately arranged on the stems. The Knock Out rose is a shrub that produces vibrant roses in three primary colors: pink, red and yellow. Due to its low maintenance requirements and overall hardiness, the Knock Out rose allows even the most inexperienced gardener to add roses to their landscape. The genus for Lilacs is Syringa and it is a member of the Olive, or Oleaceae, family which also contains plants such as Jasmine and Privet. There are between 20 and 25 different species of the plant, although various other cultivars and hybrids have been developed over the years Liriope is a genus of low, grass-like, floweringplants from East Asia and Southeast Asia. Some species are often used in landscaping in temperate latitudes. It may be called lilyturf in North America, although it is neither a true grass (family Poaceae) nor a lily (genus Lilium). Milkweed is a medicinal plant. Its milky sap contains cardiac glycosides that may be used to treat a variety of heart diseases. The Monarch butterfly is dependent on Milkweed for nutrition and propagation. Milkweed sap is the sole food source of the Monarch butterfly larvae. Portulaca grandiflora (moss rose) is a succulent flowering plant in the family Portulacaceae, native to Argentina, southern Brazil, and Uruguay and often cultivated in gardens Onion, Allium cepa, is an herbaceous biennial in the family Liliaceae grown for its edible bulb. The stem of the plant is a flattened disc at the base and the tubular leaves form a pseudostem where their sheaths overlap.... The bulbs are formed just above the flattened stem of the plant by overlapping leaves. Along with true grasses (Poaceae), several other families of grass-like plants are typically marketed asornamental grasses. These include the sedges (Cyperaceae), rushes (Juncaceae), restios (Restionaceae), and cat-tails (Typhaceae). All are monocotyledons, typically with narrow leaves and parallel veins. The peony or paeony is a flowering plant in the genus Paeonia, the only genus in the family Paeoniaceae. They are native to Asia, Europe and Western North America.... Herbaceous peonies are also sold as cut flowers on a large scale, although generally only available in late spring and early summer. Pumpkin belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae and is grown primarily as a vegetable or ornamental plant. Pumpkin plants are short lived annual or perennial vines with branching tendrils and broad lobed leaves. The plant produces large yellow or orange flowers and a pepo fruit (berry with a thick rind) known as a pumpkin. Pyracantha (Firethorn) Pyracantha is a fast-growing, evergreen hedging plant with thorns making it an excellent security barrier or screen. It has white flowers in the summer, followed by bright red, yellow or orange berries in the autumn (depending on the variety) making it an attractive ornamental garden hedge.

Red Raspberries Rhubarb Rose of Sharon Sandhill Plum Sea Oats Sedum Shallots Spruce Sweet Cherry Tree Tart Cherry Tree Tomato Weeping Pine Wild Sunflowers Wisteria Yews Raspberry is the name given to two plant species in the genus Rubus, Rubus idaeus (red raspberry) and Rubus occidentalis (black raspberry) grown for their edible fruit. Raspberry plants have perennial root systems and biennial stems which are known as canes. Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum) is a species of plant in the family Polygonaceae. It is a herbaceous perennial growing from short, thick rhizomes.... Although rhubarbis not a true fruit, in the kitchen it is usually prepared as if it were. An erect, deciduous shrub, Rose of Sharon produces colorful, cup-shaped flowers in summer and fall. Other common names include shrub althea and Chinese hibiscus. Prunus angustifolia pronounced (PROO-nus an-gus-tih-fole-ee-uh), known commonly as Chickasaw plum, Cherokeeplum, Florida sand plum, sandhill plum, or sand plum, is a North American species of plum-bearing tree. Sea oats is a long lived, slow growing, warm season, perennial grass commonly associated with the upper dunes along beach fronts. It grows erect to approximately 6 feet in height at maturity, and has leaves that can grow to 24 inches in length....sea oats is also rhizomatous. Sedum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Crassulaceae, members of which are commonly known as stonecrops. Shallot, (Allium cepa, variety aggregatum), mildly aromatic plant of the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae), grown for its edible bulbs.... The small bulbs develop in clusters on a common base, much like the garlic plant. Spruce, any of about 40 species of evergreen ornamental and timber trees constituting the genus Picea of the conifer family Pinaceae, native to the temperate and cold regions of the Northern Hemisphere. They are pyramidal trees with whorled branches and thin, scaly bark. Sweet cherry trees are large and rather upright, attaining heights up to 11 metres (36 feet). The fruit is a fleshy drupe (stone fruit) that is generally heart-shaped to nearly globular, about 2 cm (1 inch) in diameter, and varies in colour from yellow through red to nearly black. The acid content of the sweet cherry is low. The higher acid content of the sour cherry produces its characteristic tart flavour. Sour cherry trees are smaller, rarely over 5 metres (16 feet) in height. The fruit is round to oblate in shape, is generally dark red in colour, and has so much acid that it is not appealing for eating fresh. The tomato is the edible, often red, fruit/berry of theplant Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant. The plant belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The branches grow downward and spread across the soil surface like a ground cover. However, with proper early pruning, weeping white pine can develop into a small tree up to 12 feet (3.7 m.) tall. Its canopy outline is irregular.... The needles of a weeping white pine are evergreen and smell good. Early settlers celebrated this ubiquitous plains flower and in 1903, the Kansas Legislature designated the Sunflower, Helianthus annuus, as the state flower. Like many wide-spread plants, it is known by several other names such as CommonSunflower, Wild Sunflower and Annual Sunflower. Wisteria is a genus of flowering plants in the legume family, Fabaceae (Leguminosae), that includes ten species of woody climbing vines that are native to China, Korea, and Japan and as an introduced species to the Eastern United States. English yew, (Taxus baccata ), also called common yew or European yew, (all three are lumber trade names), an ornamental evergreen tree or shrub of the yew family (Taxaceae), widely distributed throughout Europe and Asia as far east as the Himalayas.
