2 SOPRON Hungary s Capital of Kékfrankos is living up to its name with the best of its classy, cooler climate Kékfrankos wines now worthy of comparison to the brilliant Blaufränkish made just across the Austrian border in the Burgenland. Sopron has an exciting cocktail of soils including limestone, gneiss and mica schist. pannonhalma An excellent balance between freshness, tension and precision on one side, and ripe fullness on the other is evident in the white and red wines of Pannonhalmi Apátság, the 1,000 plus year old monastery that re-established its wine making tradition over a decade ago after a long hiatus. ETYEK Sauvignon Blanc shines bright in the region s limestone soils where it captures the full spectrum of aromas while keeping vibrant freshness on the palate. Pinot Noir is also at home in Etyek while Zöldveltelini (Austria s Grüner Veltliner) is showing great promise. Very good sparkling wines also come from here. TOKAJ Unesco listed Tokaj is Hungary s best-known wine region, where the conditions are ripe for noble rot to occur and create the sumptuously sweet Tokaji Aszú, one of the world s great wines. Tokaj s dry wine, from the Furmint and Hárslevelű, grapes is also increasingly impressing international wine critics. Somló Hungary s smallest wine region produces some of the country s biggest whites: complex, mineral-infused Furmint, Hárslevelű and Olaszrizling, which originate from a single volcanic hill of basalt rock. Kreinbacher is brilliantly pioneering traditional method sparkling wines in the region. szekszárd Ripe Kékrankos with a juicy sour cherry note is coming into its own as a single varietal wine, as well as bringing its structure and energy to the region s Bikavér (Bull s Blood), and other red blends. Szekszárd s Bikavér is also spiced up with a few percent of the Kadarka grape, which by itself makes a light coloured but spicy and distinctive red. BALATON Many microclimates and varying soils make for a wide variety of wine styles around Central Europe s largest lake, which also exerts a moderating influence. A rough distinction can be drawn between the mineral wines from the predominantly volcanic and limestone soils of the northern shore and the fruitier, rounder wines from the loess of the southern shore.
