2 Profile Casa Comerci is a winery in Badia of Nicotera (VV), under the hills of Monte Poro, in the heart of wine-growing in Calabria. To understand its genesis and its characteristics, we need to investigate two determining factor: the wine culture and the family s history of its owners. A leap back in time of many years. Back in 1571, Gabriel Barrio, one of the first historians of Calabria, spoke of a famous wine produced around the territory of Filocastro, district which, until 1830, Limbadi, a town near Nicotera, was part of. Jerome Marafioti, a student of the Barrio, in the study that completed the historiographical excursus on Calabria said that Nicotera was an area abound with wine. Evidence of the wine vocation of the territory is also a story that dates back to Indeed, the industrial group Gallinari from Reggio Emilia, one of the leading Italian manufacturers of trains and railways, once arrived in Nicotera decided to build right on the rail a winery in order to facilitate the sale of wine and its introduction into the markets of North Italy and France. If Gallinari, who could boast of a privileged perspective on the best areas of the Peninsula, decided to establish themselves in Nicotera, the reason is to be ascribed in the resources of the territory around Nicotera as a wine-growing and in its distinguishing features which were and still are different from other rural areas. It was all this wealth the engine of everything which developed thanks to the contribution of Francesco Comerci, a clever businessman and politician. Many are the battles that he fought on its own territory. One in particular needs to be told; indeed without it the history of Casa Comerci could not have been written: a law for the protection and development of viticulture that he proposed in the late 1800 s. On one hand Francesco was the person who laid the foundation stone of the company thanks to his perseverance, on the other hand the growth of Casa Comerci is to be ascribed to the passion of two women: Michelina and Rosina. Francesco had in fact two daughters, a disgrace in Calabria at that time, but not for him. Michelina and Rosina were taught by their father since they were children the value of land, the prestige and the quality of its fruits. Each of them grew up with a preference: Michelina fell in love with the power of the olive trees, Rosina, the second - born, with the generosity of the vineyard. In fact, Rosina continued to follow her father s footsteps. Twist of fate, Rosina get married to Domenicoantonio Silipo, the cooper of the town. From their union were born 7 children. Widow, Rosina, determined not to give up, devoted all herself to the project of her father. Rosina was particularly attached to her last son Salvatore, born a few months before her husband's death. Micuccio as her mother called him in honor of his father was appointed the heir of the all possessions including all the wine activities. Salvatore grew up and became a lawyer and with wise foresight made a painful decision: he decided to leave Calabria and to emigrate along with his family to the north of Italy following the fate of other many people from the south. He settled in Emilia which was not so different from Calabria. The connection with the land was as strong as in Calabria.
3 Profile/2 Despite being far from Calabria, Salvatore didn t abandon his family s vineyards. Salvatore left all his properties on loan to some settlers and kept visiting them every year. Returning back to Calabria was a great joy for him, the joy of making wine. As her mother did with him he passed on this inherited passion to his children as life teaching. So, we arrive to Domenicantonio, the son who bears the name of his grandfather cooper. He rebuilt Casa Comerci, something that he felt like doing in order to honor the history of his family, although many are the miles that separate Emilia Romagna where he lives from Nicotera. The connection with the land and with its traditions are the values on which all the decisions from Casa Comerci are based. In fact, the choice of growing two indigenous grape varieties, Magliocco Canino and Greco Bianco, highlights how important is for Casa Comerci the link with the territory. In particular, as for the grape variety Magliocco Canino, which grows just in small areas of Calabria, Casa Comerci is the only winery to work it in purity. The company which has been certified organic since 2009 for the grape production has completed the organic certification process for the bottle of the wine and the bottle labeling in Currently the wines bottled until today since 2013 with the organic certification are: the red wine Libìci 2011, the white wine Réfulu 2013 and the rosè wine Granàtu All of them came out with a new graphic design.
