3 Welcome Winter is in full swing, and we ve launched a fabulous package which gives couples the opportunity to enjoy a mid-week winter break at the Winelands in Gauteng at a discounted price. Last week I was honoured to meet two inspirational South Africans Francois Pienaar and Dr Mamphela Ramphele - thanks to the MAD Leadership Foundation, which chose Kievits Kroon as the venue for their week-long annual Leadership Summit. 4 10 Reasons to book a romantic Winter getaway at Kievits Kroon There are so many reasons why Kievits Kroon is a great destination for a romantic getaway, but in Winter we can add a few more! 1. Our 41 Library Bar and Granita Restaurant have cosy fireplaces which are lit all day and during dinner Library Bar stocks a wonderful collection of books, daily newspapers and the latest lifestyle magazines. Cosy up with a good read, and coffee or hot chocolate in front of the fire. 3. All our rooms are heated and have individual climate control panels. 4. Our beds have quality duvets and 100% cotton linen for guaranteed cuddles and late lie-ins. 5. Our luxury rooms have showers as well as baths there s nothing that will warm you up quite like a long soak. 6. When you step out of the bathroom, you can wrap yourselves in the soft, warm fleece robes and slippers provided for guests. 7. Rooms have tea and coffee making facilities and you ll find delicious hot chocolate powder on the tray! 8. There are blankets in the rooms which you can take out onto your private terrace to wrap up while you watch the sunset. 9. Our Winelands Spa has superb thermae facilities which are guaranteed to warm you up, including saunas, Swiss showers, Jacuzzis, steam rooms and a heated indoor pool. 10. In Winter we serve delicious, wholesome comfort food in Kingsley s buffet restaurant including soups, carveries and casseroles. 2

5 Wine tasting etiquette the Dos and Don ts Don t wear perfume or heavily scented cologne to tasting rooms; the scents can overwhelm the subtle aromas in wine and interfere with your own and others experience. Wineries are not bars. Although alcohol is being served, it s a relaxed and conversational environment not conducive to loud banter and raucous activities. To glean the most from the wines on pour, swirling is a great way to stoke (read: aerate) a wine s myriad aromas. For maximum control, place your glass on a flat surface and swirl while grasping the stem. When tasting, hold glasses by the stem rather than the bowl; holding them by the bowl coats glasses in greasy fingerprints and can disturb the temperature of the wine. 3

6 Inhale deeply before taking a sip to savour the wine s aromas. Swirl the wine around in your mouth to ensure it coats all the surfaces; we pick up different textures and flavour sensations in different parts of our mouths. Taste white and lighter wines before heavier wines, such as bold reds, and save the sweetest wines for last. This ensures the boldest and sweetest wines don t overwhelm the more delicate ones you sip first. Pace yourself! Make use of spittoons or tasting buckets on offer. Spitting all or a portion of the wine you taste will help you to remain alert and get the most out of your experience. Keep tabs on how much you re consuming. Drink plenty of water to stave off dehydration. Finally, always have a designated driver! Source 4

Entries close on 31 July REVIEW: A beautiful escape Kievits Kroon Country Estate Crossing a tollgate anywhere always makes the destination feel further than it actually is. Despite that, getting to Kievits Kroon was quick and easy from Johannesburg along the N1 north towards Polokwane. Taking into account the Friday afternoon traffic, we arrived within 45 minutes. A dusty red dirt road led to the estate s dramatic entrance. With the thatched Cape Dutch-style architecture of the manor house and outbuildings of this 16-hectare estate, I immediately understood why they call it the winelands of Gauteng. 9 Kievits Kroon hosts MAD Leadership Foundation s Annual Leadership Summit Make A Difference (MAD) Leadership Foundation was formed in 2003 by Francois Pienaar and a group of like-minded individuals who shared a vision to develop academically talented scholars with leadership potential into future leaders for South Africa. Francois Pienaar was appointed as the Founding Chairman. This year Kievits Kroon hosted the 5-day MAD Annual Leadership Summit and during the week we welcomed a number of VIPs and dignatories to the estate, including Francois Pienaar and Dr Mamphela Ramphele who was a keynote speaker.
