This unique tasting brings together 100 Rioja wines 10 wines from 10 different categories, each selected to reflect the best of what Rioja has to offer in that particular category. For the third year running, Wines from Rioja assembled together a panel of expert judges from across the wine trade among them buyers, sommeliers, journalists and merchants to taste, deliberate, and ultimately select the 100 wines to make up this year s 10x10 line up. Under the guidance of co-chairs and Masters of Wine Tim Atkin and Sarah Jane Evans, the judges tasted through nearly 400 wines in order to bring you the selection you will see before you today. From clean, crisp whites, to fruity rosés, mature reds and everything in between, this selection of 10x10 wines brings to life the sheer breadth and depth of Rioja s portfolio of wines. Take the opportunity to explore the ever evolving whites and rosés; discover the variety of styles in the Generic category or reacquaint yourself with some of Rioja s more traditional styles. 3 RIOJA 10 X 10 TASTING BOOKLET MEET THE JUDGES Presenting the chairs of the Rioja 10 x 10. TIM ATKIN MW Tim Atkin MW is an awardwinning journalist, and is a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino and the Cofradía del Vino de Rioja. This year s 10x10 is taking place against a background of great and positive changes in Spain s largest fine wine region. Earlier this summer, the DOCa Rioja voted to create a new category of Single Vineyard wines from parcels that are over 35 years old and harvested manually. It also decided to authorise the production of sparkling wines using the traditional method. In the not too distant future, we could have two new categories in our 10x10 competition. But what we had this year was more than impressive enough. The categories that have shown the biggest improvements since 10 x 10 began are rosés and whites. The former category was particularly good this year, demonstrating that Rioja is capable of rivaling Navarra, traditionally considered the rosado capital of Spain. The whites, too, continue to show greater complexity and a real sense of place, with Tempranillo Blanco in particular adding another dimension to the region s array of grapes. And yet, Rioja s reputation is largely based on its reds, and especially on their ability to age in bottle. There was ample evidence of that this year, with wines going back to The quality of the best vintages, such as 2004 and 2010, also shone through. And 2011 and 2012, both considered hot, so-called Mediterranean vintages, showed that they are much better than some critics believe. As ever, the best producers make great wines in all conditions. The 10 x 10 competition provides a wonderful insight into current and developing styles of in Rioja, confirming that as well as producing some of the best value reds and whites in Spain, the region is also part of the world s elite. CHAIRS CHOICES I chose my chair s choices all reds, but I could just as easily picked at least one white to reflect a spread of vintages and styles, from a pure Maturana Tinta to a mature, traditional style Crianza, an age worthy blend of Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon and Graciano to a delicious Gran Reserva from the remarkable 2010 vintage. LOOK OUT FOR THE CHAIRS CHOICES ICON SARAH JANE EVANS MW Sarah Jane Evans MW is an award winning journalist, co-chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards, and a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino Rioja 10x10 contains many famous names each year. However the point of blind tasting is not to be influenced by the reputation of the brand. With our team of experts sommeliers, wine buyers, wine writers all of them fine tasters, but also people who understand their markets, we had a great day independently selecting the best from the wines submitted by Spain s best known wine region. Rioja may only be 60 miles long by 30 miles wide, dissected by the River Ebro. Yet the range of elevations and aspects, the slopes along the tributaries to the Ebro, the diversity of soils, together mean there is plenty of choice. Among the reds, where until recently Tempranillo has been so dominant, this tasting gives the chance to enjoy single varietal Graciano, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Maturana Tinta. The Reservas were spot-on, while the Crianzas offered so much more than straightforward young everyday drinking. A number of them showing the benefit of Reserva quality fruit in the blend. At the other end of the style spectrum, this year s selection of Gran Reservas are polished, precise wines. A few are from excellent vintages 2004, 2010 but all are wines to enjoy. This year the whites and the rosados were better than ever. A number of the Oaked Whites are modern classics and show the exciting promise for this category. New this year was the Wines in Retail category, sampling the leaders among the bestsellers in the high street. Savour this collection of treats from Rioja - we did! This collection of my favourites on the day included, for the first time, a Garnacha Rosado, one of the new wave; and not one but two whites, showing my enthusiasm for this growing category. Then a Crianza, with a very atypical 18 years of age, a gloriously mature treat. And to finish, the superb Dalmau: modern, confident, polished, lovely now, with years to come. 4 UNOAKED WHITES 6 A lot of has been made of the expansion in the number of permitted white varieties since 2008, when three local and three international grapes were added to the list, but our selection this year put the spotlight back on Viura, Rioja s most traditional and potentially outstanding white grape. Seven of our ten picks were pure Viuras, two were Viura blends (with Chardonnay and Malvasia, respectively) and only one was a new style Tempranillo Blanco. The top wines in this group are exceptional wines, modern classics. Viura had a reputation for dullness, but these whites resoundingly disprove that. The oak is finely handled creating gastronomic wines, a number with real ageing potential. The two exceptions to Viura, the Garnacha Blanca and the Tempranillo Blanco, highlight the promising new directions for whites in Rioja. 7 ROSADO Rosado in Rioja has always been a tiny category, so it is excellent to see them growing in number and character. There s every shade on the colour card from the palest Garnachas or the vivid deep red Tempranillos. While deep colours work on the domestic market, palest pink is King in the international marketplace. Some producers, like those here, are innovating successfully to produce the subtlest colours for export. Rioja Rosado deserves its own place on the wine list. This selection was dominated by half a dozen wines from the under-rated 2014 vintage, but also featured Crianzas from 2009 and 1999 that could qualify as Gran Reservas. Our judges rightly commented on the quality and value for money that were on show here in this enjoyably varied line up. That 1999 is particularly special. 10 RESERVA ( 10-15) The price range is arguably where Rioja delivers the best value for money and so it proved again this year. Covering vintages from 2013 (the lightest of recent years) to 2010 (the best), this was a very impressive line up of six blends and four varietal Tempranillos. It was good to see Garnacha, which has declined in fashion in recent years thanks to the rise and rise of Tempranillo, featuring in a quartet of the wines here. BODEGAS ALTANZA, S.A. 13 GRAN RESERVA As it did last year, the Gran Reserva featured the biggest spread of vintages, ranging from 1994 to This was one of the strongest line-ups, thanks to the presence of excellent vintages such as 2010 and Stylistically, there was a broad range, too, with four wines made entirely from Tempranillo and six blends featuring one or more of the other three traditional Rioja varieties (Mazuelo, Graciano and Garnacha). Sure enough, these were the most modern wines in the tasting, covering a spectrum of vintages from 2015 to 2008, with 2014 supplying the majority of the wines. Our selection was split evenly between Tempranillos and blends with newly rediscovered Maturana featuring in one of them.
