You can be adventurous or indulgent while you re here, and both approaches will soothe your soul. This is a place with character, history, a relaxed vibe and an open spirit. There s almost too much to do, all of it fun. World-famous geothermal hot springs will melt your tension. Spectacular wines from our newly designated growing region, or AVA, will impress the toughest wine critic. 3 There s a fire down below that s been attracting people for centuries. Geothermal hot springs, dramatically visible at the Old Faithful Geyser north of town, lace the deep rocks underneath. Four thousand years ago, the native Wappo Indians knew the curative powers of the hot water and earth here. The same natural resources made the town a wellness destination in the late 1860s when it was founded by Sam Brannan, California s first millionaire. They were all onto something: the combination of hot rich mineral water, volcanic ash and the justly famous mud baths still bring visitors here from around the world to de-stress in a remarkably effective way, enhanced even more by the skilled, strong, intuitive hands of the town s most revered wellness practitioners (all hail massage therapists!). 4 It was a pretty big deal when an unknown winery upset the French in a 1976 blind tasting, electrifying the world and putting Napa Valley wines on the international map. Winemakers have known since the late 1800s that this part of the valley is a spectacular wine-growing region. It was a really big deal in 2009 when winemaker Bo Barrett from the same winery that beat the French (let s say it again!), Chateau Montelena, won another landmark victory: this time getting the government to officially recognize as its own designated grape-growing region, or AVA (American Viticultural Area). The winemaking community is immensely proud to be the 15th Napa Valley AVA, but they ve known this official measure of respect for their superior product was long overdue. 6 Great food is blessedly abundant in Napa Valley, and certainly holds its own as a culinary destination. Leading the accolades is Solbar at Solage, whose chef Brandon Sharp was awarded his second consecutive Michelin Star in 2010, and three stars from S.F. Chronicle food critic Michael Bauer. JoLe s chef-owner, Matt Spector, was named one of Napa and Sonoma s Rising Stars from StarChefs.com in Restaurant choices here include just about everything in the spectrum from haute cuisine with a relaxed twist, of course to authentic Southern barbecue. 10 was once home to a significant population of indigenous people, the Wappo. In the Spanish colonial era of the late 1700s, Napa Valley was controlled by the Mission San Francisco de Solano, located in what is now Sonoma. After Mexican Independence, mission properties were parceled into ranchos in the 1830s, with the first American settlers arriving in this area a decade later. Town founder Samuel Brannan was the leader of a settlement expedition that landed in San Francisco in Publisher of the city s first English newspaper, The California Star, he became California s first millionaire following the 1849 Gold Rush. Fascinated by s natural hot springs, Brannan purchased 2,000 acres to develop a spa reminiscent of Saratoga in New York. (Great true story: the town s name comes from his tipsy malapropism that he would make this the of Sarafornia, and the name stuck.)
