4 *Kampong Spirit by Hans Art Sunday, 14 August, am pm, Jurong Regional Library Saturday, 20 August, pm, Bukit Merah Public Library Have you lived in a kampong before, or heard stories about life then? Today, most of us live in HDB flats. The only time we have to chat with neighbours is probably when we meet them in the lifts or corridors. However, if you ve lived in the kampong, you will likely see them a great deal more! Back in those days, there was no Facebook, Foursquare or Twitter to let the whole world know what you were doing, but children still had loads of fun playing together! Go back in time to the days of the kampong spirit! Try your hand at drawing some kampong houses. This programme is open to children aged Registration is required. 3
5 * Happy Teachers Day by Buggy Bees Kids Tuesday, 23 August, 4.00pm 5.00 pm, Sembawang Public Library Wednesday, 24 August, 4.00pm 5.00 pm, Yishun Public Library Saturday, 27 August, 12.00pm 1.00 pm, Sengkang Public Library * Do you think teaching is an easy job? This is a stories-and-craft special to celebrate Teachers Day (2 September). This programme is open to children aged Registration is required. Behind the Scenes: Flying Aeroplanes Monday, 15 August, 4.00pm 5.00 pm, Sembawang Public Library by Flight Science Aeroplanes are heavier than air yet they can fly and stay in the sky. They can also fly straight or turn. How? You probably guess it to be due to the engine and design, but do you know how it works? Find out at this workshop that will take you behind the scenes of a pilot s life. Discover the science and art of flying. You will also make different kinds of paper aeroplanes (called aero-gami) and aero-gliders that float and glide through the air. Courseware and materials will be provided. This programme is open to children aged Registration is required. 4
6 RESOURCES Who Stole Mona Lisa? Author: By Ruthie Knapp Publisher: New York: Bloomsbury Children s Books, 2010 Call No.: JP KNA Uncover the mystery of how Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre Museum, in this true story narrated by the portrait itself! You will also get a chance to get first-hand information about how she came about, the life she had lived and how the traumatic incident has changed her life. Read the tale to discover the tricks employed by the thief to steal her from the museum and to what extent he went to keep her from the world. By Kavita Ilangovan Teacher Screecher Author: Peter Bently Publisher: London: Boxer, Call No.: J S BEN In St Orlok s Primary, a school for vampires, strange things tend to happen around Lee, Bella and Billy. When their teacher is down with bat flu, Miss Fitt, a monster with steel bolts and the meanest temper, replaces her. One night, as the curious young vampires trail the mysterious teacher to the hidden attic of the school s caretaker, Old Gore, they discover he is up to something sinister! Will the vampires foil Old Gore s evil plot and save the day? Read this humorous book to find out! By Lynn Ang The day Tiger Rose said goodbye Author: Jane Yolen Publisher: New York : Random House Children s Books, Call No.: J YOL Tiger Rose s time is near and she knows it. Having lived a cat s life, she gracefully accepts old age and bids farewell to her beloved friends. After, she cleans herself from head to tail, savours her last moments in life as well as takes a last look at her endearing home and surroundings before she gets ready for her departure. A good read written by renowned author Jane Yolen, which views death from the perspective of one who is dying. This story has a sentimental touch to it and young children can learn to address death as a natural course of life. By Kheak Hui Hiang 5 For more recommendations of good reads, please our children s librarians at ask@nlb.gov.sg or telephone: Our Advisory counters are also available at Jurong Regional Library, Tampines Regional Library and Woodlands Regional Library from 1 pm 9 pm daily. You can check the availability of these titles via our online catalogue at

The renowned primatologist was in Singapore and she visited the library to tell stories about her work. Dr Goodall also greeted everyone in Chimpanzee (go to to listen if you re curious how it sounds).
