Acknowledgements Entwine Australia was developed by the Winemakers Federation of Australia (WFA) with funds from the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (now Wine Australia) and the Australian government Caring for our Country program. The Australian Wine Research Institute (AWRI) reviewed and developed the Entwine carbon calculator and benchmarking capacity in June 2015 with support from the Australian government. The management of Entwine Australia transferred from the WFA to the AWRI in August The AWRI is the Australian wine industry s own research organisation, supporting grape and wine producers with the development and adoption of innovative tools and practices. 3 1. What is Entwine? Entwine Australia is the Australian wine industry s sustainability program - set up to support growers and winemakers in demonstrating and improving the sustainability of their businesses. Entwine provides credentials which cover the fundamental components of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) and can be applied to both the vineyard and winery. The program provides benchmarking tools and resources to enable planning, evaluation, control and communication. Entwine is a voluntary program designed with flexibility to suit the changing goals and needs of all Australian grape and wine producers. It provides information for wine industry research, development and extension activities and can be used by members for benchmarking. Supporting a sustainable Australian grape and wine community 2. Why should I join Entwine? In Australia, as around the world, retailers, restaurants and consumers are looking to buy or offer wines that meet modern sustainability standards. Australian wine producers are renowned for high standards of environmental care, social and economic impacts. Entwine provides a platform to demonstrate, substantiate and communicate their commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement. 3

4 3. How does Entwine work? Entwine is as an umbrella sustainability program. Under the Entwine umbrella there are two components for members the reporting of sustainability metrics to the AWRI and participation in an approved certification program. Entwine provides credentials which cover the fundamental components of sustainability (environmental, social and economic) and can be applied to both the vineyard and winery. The program provides benchmarking tools and resources to enable planning, evaluation, control and communication. Entwine members can choose which certification program best suits their business from: ISO Freshcare Environmental Viticulture/Winery Sustainable Australia Winegrowing 4. Entwine Australia membership categories Entwine Australia membership is available to all Australian wine-grape growers and wineries. All members are required to renew their membership annually and report business metrics to the AWRI through the Entwine online interface. There are three categories of membership: Membership category Membership requirements Certified member 1. Participation in an Entwineapproved certification program and a triennial third-party audit 2. Reporting of Entwine business metrics Member 1. Fees are for one year s membership (1 July June 2017) and are not refundable. b Non-WFA members are required to pay a higher membership fee in 2016 as a requirement of the Entwine management transfer agreement between WFA and AWRI. 4

5 Certified members Certified members participate in an Entwine-approved certification program such as ISO14001, Freshcare Environmental Viticulture/Winery or Sustainable Australia Winegrowing. They are required to demonstrate their commitment to this program with a triennial third-party audit. Members Ordinary members also participate in an Entwine-approved certification program. Members are required to perform an annual self-assessment but are not required to participate in a third-party audit. Members self-assessments are reported online during the membership renewal period (July-August each year). Associate members Associate membership is a pathway to ordinary and certified membership of Entwine. Associate members are only required to provide annual reporting of Entwine business metrics, but do not require third-party audits or selfassessments. Associate membership may be held for a maximum of two years, after which time it is expected that the Associate member will engage in an approved program and become eligible for ordinary membership. All members of Entwine must report annually against a set of defined business metrics. 6 Section 1 New Entwine members FAQs 5. How do I join Entwine? Go to the AWRI Entwine web page here or enter this address into your web browser: a) Click on the green tab, Join or Login (circled in red below). 6

7 b) Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the link to register as a new Entwine member (red circle). You will be directed to Entwine online. 7

8 c) Your new membership has commenced. Refer to the instructions in the boxes below Choose a password that you will remember and that will not be easily guessed by someone else. Select either vineyard or a winery from the drop down list. Position your mouse over the red? for help and extra information to guide you. 8

9 d) Enter your site details The red? symbols indicate compulsory fields. When you position your mouse over the red? extra information will appear to assist you. Your coordinates will assist us to find you (e.g. in case of a biosecurity incursion) Checking this box will make your location visible online. Enter your website address (if you have one). It is preferable to link directly to sustainability information about your company. 9

10 If you use a grower code when communicating with a purchasing winery (e.g. Treasury Wine Estates or Pernod Ricard Wines), enter it here If the majority of your vineyard or winery is either certified organic or certified biodynamic, please tick the corresponding box. You must click the save button to save your information e) Certification details. Select the most appropriate membership category for your business. Additional information can be accessed by hovering over the red? Certified members are those who have completed an independent audit within the past three years. Checking this box will make your location and Entwine report available online. These reports enable you to share your sustainability story publically. Members are those who have completed training in an approved certification program but have NOT completed an independent audit within the past 3 years. Associate members are new to Entwine. Associate members must submit an annual online Entwine data return. Don t forget to save your information! 10

14 A fertiliser assistant is provided if the nitrogen content of the product is not known. This can be especially helpful if organic fertilisers have been used, where the nitrogen content of the fertiliser is not known. Nitrogen values can be entered directly into the fields shown, or can be generated by clicking on the Assist me helper. Note that any values already entered into the fertiliser fields will be overwritten by the assistant if used. The fertiliser assistant will calculate the nitrogen and urea contents from a range of predefined synthetic and organic fertilisers. The predefined lists are shown below in Tables 1 and 2. Additional fertilisers can be defined in the fields provided. Checksums are provided at the bottom of the page so that the results can be verified before confirming entry. Clicking the Save/Submit button will fill the results into the data entry page. 16 g) Survey All Certified members and Members are required to demonstrate their ongoing involvement in an approved certification program by completing an annual online self-assessment survey. The best management practice survey provides guidance and resources to assist members to achieve sustainable practice. For each question, select the answer which is best aligned with your current practices. If you are unsure about an answer, hover the mouse over the red? for guidance and links to other resources. h) Payment Select the type of payment that best suits your business from the drop down list (credit card, cheque or bank transfer). NB: You must select a payment type for your membership to be processed. i) New member verification New members must be verified by the AWRI. This is to prevent unauthorised access to the program. Verification will occur automatically and usually takes less than 72 hours. If you require urgent verification, please phone the AWRI on

17 Section 2: Returning Entwine members FAQs 6. How do I log in to Entwine? Go to the AWRI Entwine web page here or enter the following address into your web browser: Click on Join or login on the green button shown below. Do not attempt to login to the AWRI web page (indicated by the red cross). 17

18 The Entwine online login page looks like this Your user name is in the sent to you from the AWRI. It will begin with the letters ENT followed by 5 numbers e.g. ENT Your password is a secure code known only to you. If you have forgotten your password or if it doesn t work, it is easy to reset. 18

19 7. How do I reset my password? a) Go to the Entwine web page here or enter this address into your web browser: b) Click on Join or login. 19

20 c) Click on the Forgotten password button. d) Enter your Entwine number (member number), your address and tick the box I m not a robot. A new password will be ed to you. 20

21 8. Security message preventing you from logging on? If you see a security message like the one shown below, click on continue to this website. You may need to accept this once or twice more to access the site depending on your virus protection software. 9. What do I do if the web page is inaccessible? Try accessing Entwine using a different web browser (e.g. Firefox or Google Chrome) or update your existing browser to the latest version. 21

22 Section 3: Results After verification and receipt of payment, you can access your results. You can review your production metrics and emissions any time by logging in to Entwine online. Benchmarking reports are available between October and June. The results are arranged into three sections, each of which can be accessed through the blue buttons at the top of the page. 10. Production metrics and emissions Each input and emission is presented as a total. For vineyards the results are presented as per tonne and per hectare. Winery data is presented as per tonne of grapes crushed or per kl of finished wine. The volume of finished wine used is the sum of the Full winemaking + Final stage winemaking only. The pie chart at the bottom of the report displays the greenhouse gas emissions for the current year and the bar chart shows an annual comparison of performance (if multiple years are available). Note that only data from 2014/15 onwards will be displayed, as the data required for carbon calculation were not collected earlier. All inputs and results can be downloaded in Excel format for further processing or record keeping by clicking the Save Excel data Button. 22

25 11. Summary metrics The summary metrics page displays a number of important environmental performance metrics for the site, based on the input data. 25

26 12. Benchmarking reports The benchmarking page provides comparative data based both on the site s history and other users of the Entwine program. The comparisons are provided as a guide, to give an indication of how the business may best be able to improve. Benchmarking reports are made available after the completion of data entry by ALL members and manual data screening is performed. This is anticipated to occur in October. Use the filters to select a type of comparison. The example benchmarking report above is from an Entwine member winery. Using the filters, the member selected a comparison against other sites based on tonnes of grapes crushed. The member ranking is shown as a percentage of the number of members in that category. 28

29 LPG (L/t) Electricity (CO 2 -e) 13. How do I interpret the benchmarking dials? In the example report above, the ranking for Total electricity (kwh) is shown on the dial as 60%, that is the electricity used per tonne of grapes crushed is in the highest 40% of all users in that size category (categories are shown on the summary metrics page). The ranking is shown in another way in the figure below. The results for electricity used per tonne of grapes crushed are shown for all 61 Entwine members in the size category. The green arrow indicates the position of the member (60% of all members), that is, the member is in the highest 40% of all (61) users in that size category. 60% Member number The ranking for LPG (L) per tonne of grapes crushed is in the lowest 34% of all (61) similar sized wineries. 30 14. Where do I get support? Entwine Australia draws on the knowledge of an AWRI team with more than 100 years of combined wine industry experience.
