6 Crowley, La The Rice Capital of America Built on the prairies of Southwest Louisiana, Crowley is the Rice Capital of America, a reputation gained when Crowley milled more than all other American cities combined. This prairie land attracted a different kind of settler, from those who settled the bayous and marshes of our state farmers. From the Midwest and other parts of the United States, France, Germany and other countries they came, all hoping to carve farms from the vast prairies. Their knowledge and ingenuity transformed providence rice grown in shallow ponds on the prairies for home use into a major agricultural industry. Through the development of irrigation and placing of levees around the fields, commercial harvest became possible. One early settler, S. L. Wright, soon developed a superior variety of rice which he named Blue Rose with this and succeeding varieties, S. L. Wright brought international fame to the rice industry of Crowley and Acadia Parish, helping to transform rice into the world s number one food crop. The beautiful fields which spread across these prairies not only provide the economic base of this region they produce the golden grain which is at the heart of the finest culinary dishes found anywhere in the world. The rich blend of cultural dishes created by the French, German, Italian, Lebanese, and Creole settlers attracted to this area rival those of any culinary capital of the world.
