Rainy Lake makes up a unique portion of the Canadian Shield. At least four times in the past billion years, glaciers two miles thick carved the lake. Scrape marks in the rock are common on our shoreline. The shoreline is made up of some of the oldest exposed rock found anywhere on earth, 2.7 billion years old. Our view is facing straight east overlooking both American and Canadian waters. The far eastern shore is Canada. Voyageurs National Park is straight ahead and to the right as you look through our windows. Also to the right was Rainy Lake City, home of a turn-of-the-century gold rush. After the gold rush failed, Rainy Lake City was moved across the ice in the winter and became International Falls.
