REVIEW, REVIEW, REVIEW. Use the first few minutes of class to look at your notes from yesterday. Highlight, circle, underline the important terms and definitions. Create questions on the left for the notes you wrote down yesterday.

REMINDER: Please be Safe, Respectful and Productive. Please put your cell phones and electronic devices away and do not use them during class time.

TODAY S ATTENDANCE QUESTION: What is your favorite holiday/christmas/hanukkah/other winter festival/winter food?

THE PLAN FOR TODAY: Today s Learning Targets: I can describe the distinctive styles of folk housing contributed by the major and minor folk regions of America.

THE DAILY THINK: A status symbol is something that shows that you made it to somewhere (middle class, upper class, college, adulthood, etc.) What is a status symbol that shows you have made it to the middle class? What would show that you are rich?

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The third region, the Upland South, refers to the northern part of the American South.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. In this region, the soils were poor and the towns isolated, so there was widespread poverty.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The most basic, frontier house in this region would the simple cabin and porch house.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. If things went well, another cabin could be attached to create a dogtrot house.

THE DAILY THINK AND DISCUSS: Think about it, then share with your neighbor, then be prepared to share with the class: What are the basic necessities that you need in a house? (In other words, just what can t you live without when you buy your first house)

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The final major folk region is the Lowland South, the region of the US South where slavery was prevalent.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. Folk housing in the lowland south used pier and beam construction to raise the floor several feet above the ground.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. This strategy kept flooring and framing from touching soil, where the wood would quickly be destroyed by termites and moisture.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The most common lowland South house type was the Shotgun house.

THE DAILY THINK AND DISCUSS: Think about it, then share with your neighbor, then be prepared to share with the class: Look at the image in the next slide and think about why would this type of house be called a shotgun house?

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. Shotgun houses are long narrow houses with 3 to 5 additional rooms located without a hallway behind the main room.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The design of the shotgun house was introduced to the US by African-Haitians.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. Although the contributions seen so far came from the major folk regions in the US, the minor regions produced distinctive housing styles too!

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The Acadians were French settlers who refused to accept British control of Canada.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. They were expelled from Canada and came to live in Southern US where they became known as the Cajuns.

THE DAILY THINK AND DISCUSS: Think about it, then share with your neighbor, then be prepared to share with the class: Let s look at the Acadian flag again. What do you think the symbols and colors on it stand for?

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The most common Franco-American house was the Creole Cottage.

PART 4: FOLK HOUSES. The most distinctive feature of the Creole Cottage was its built-in or ensconced porch.
