3 Article By: Alisha Rae Vining November is a month of Turkeys crafts; paper turkeys, yarn turkeys, clay pot turkeys; turkeys made out of anything and everything. Best of all are the turkeys you can eat, the one for Thanksgiving Dinner and this one that is full of healthy stuff. Supplies 1 apple 1/4 cup Fruit Loops cereal or raisins (if using Fruit Loops you will need a few raisins for the neck) 6-7 mini marshmallows 7-11 toothpicks 1 green olive 2 cloves Instructions To make the feathers: Take raisins or Fruit Loops and slide onto toothpicks about 3/4 the way down. Place a mini-marshmallow on the end. You will need 6 or 7 "feathers" depending on the size of your apple. Stick the "feathers" into the back of the apple. To make the head: Slide raisins down toothpick and top with a green olive (head). Use cloves for eyes. If your olive has a pimiento you can pull it out the back of the olive and let it hang so that it looks like a turkey wattle. Insert three toothpicks under the turkey so it can stand freely.
4 Ingredients 6 medium-size sweet potatoes (about 4lb) 1/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon orange zest 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup fresh orange juice Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 350. Peel potatoes, and cut into 1-inch-thick slices; arrange in a single layer in 2 lightly greased 13x-9-inch dishes. 2. Stir together brown sugar and next 5 ingredients; pour over potatoes. Cover with aluminum foil. 3. Bake at 325 for 45 minutes or until fork-tender. Uncover and bake 5 more minutes or until glaze become syrupy. Make Ahead: Cover and chill cooked potatoes up to 1 day. To reheat, let stand at room temperature 1 hour. Bake, covered with foil, at 350 for 20 minutes. Brought to the table by cookbook authors Matt Lee and Ted Lee (adapted from the Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern Cookbook.)
5 On this day in 1863, expressing gratitude for a pivotal Union Army victory at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on November 26, The speech, which was actually written by Secretary of State William Seward, declared that the fourth Thursday of every November thereafter would be considered an official U.S. holiday of Maureen s Thanksgiving. This announcement harkened back to when George Washington was in his first term as the first president in 1789 and the young American nation had only a few years earlier emerged from the American Revolution. At that time, George Washington called for an official celebratory "day of public thanksgiving and prayer." While Congress overwhelmingly agreed to Washington's suggestion, the holiday did not yet become an annual event. page Thomas Jefferson, the third president, felt that public demonstrations of piety to a higher power, like that celebrated at Thanksgiving, were inappropriate in a nation based in part on the separation of church and state. Subsequent presidents agreed with him. In fact, no official Thanksgiving proclamation was issued by any president between 1815 and the day Lincoln took the opportunity to thank the Union Army and God for a shift in the country's fortunes on this day in The fourth Thursday of November remained the annual day of Thanksgiving from 1863 until Then, at the tail-end of the Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, hoping to boost the economy by providing shoppers and merchants a few extra days to conduct business between the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, moved Thanksgiving to November's third Thursday. In 1941, however, Roosevelt bowed to Congress' insistence that the fourth Thursday of November be re-set permanently, without alteration, as the official Thanksgiving holiday.
6 10 Weird Sports Facts 1.) The only two days of the year in which there are no professional sports games (MLB, NBA, NHL, or NFL) are the day before and the day after the Major League all-star Game. 2.) It takes 3,000 cows to supply the NFL with enough leather for a year's supply of footballs. 3.) There are 336 dimples on a regulation golf ball. 4.) When the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers play football at home to a sellout crowd, the full stadium becomes the state's third largest city. 5.) "300 million [golf] balls are lost or discarded in the United States alone, every year." 6.) Pittsburgh is the only city where all major sports teams have the same colors: Black and gold. 7.) Americans spend more than $630 million a year on golf balls. 8.) Ten events make up the decathlon. Billiards great, Henry Lewis once sank 46 balls in a row. 9.) Mark McGwire's record-setting 70 home runs in the 1998 season traveled a total of 29,598 feet, enough to fly over Mount Everest. 10.) The home team must provide the referee with 36 footballs for each National Football League game. - Chas Hurn
