4 Jersey Fresh By Produce Pete Hi, I m Produce Pete and I want to tell you about Jersey produce. The Jersey Fresh Program was launched in 1984 to help farmers inform consumers about the availabilities and varieties of fruits and vegetables grown in New Jersey. New Jersey grows more than 100 different varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs and is ranked in the Top 10 nationally in growing blueberries, peaches, bell peppers, squash, tomatoes and cranberries. What makes Jersey produce so special is basic quality and freshness. Most produce shipped from other states to the East Coast must be picked and harvested before its peak flavor and ripeness, this is done so that the produce does not go bad while it is shipped from certain states sometimes taking 3-5 days to reach the East Coast. Because Jersey produce is grown right here, the produce can be picked and harvested at its peak making it taste better and not losing the important vitamins. We are not called the Garden State for nothing with over 10,300 farms and 730,000 acres of prime farmland. Jersey Fresh says it all! Food and agriculture are New Jerseys third largest industry with sales over 1.5 billion dollars. My family has had a relationship with farmers of New Jersey ever since I was a little boy. I started selling produce off the back of my father s truck at the age of 5 and selling fresh produce door to door. After a few years we opened our first store in Bergenfield, New Jersey and old everything in season, in fact, when we opened in the late 50 s, all our produce came from within 15 miles of our store. Those days are gone, but not Jersey produce, it s still the best. Northern Jersey has lost most of its farms but south Jersey still has a great number of family farms that produce great produce, fresh corn picked fresh daily, tomatoes picked ripe from the vine. There is no greater pleasure than eating fresh produce picked that day. From organic farms to conventional farms Jersey has it all! They have a shelf life of 16 days from the date of packing. Keep cool until use. By allowing the beans to warm up they will increase their respiration rate.
