1 The Barth-Haas Group and Germain Hansmaennel present Beer Production Market Leaders and their Challengers in the Top 40 Countries in 2011
2 The Hops Academy THE BARTH-HAAS HOPS ACADEMY It is well known that hops are a prime flavour component in beer, but their remarkably high impact on the final product is often overlooked. The closer one looks at hops, the more revealing their importance to beer becomes. Hops have seemingly inexhaustible potential not only in terms of aroma and bitterness, but also in the other attributes they provide in the brewing process and finished beer. Understanding the complexities of hops and tapping into their full potential is why we brought the BARTH-HAAS HOPS ACADEMY into being. Having an acute knowledge of the usage, effects and impact of this special brewing ingredient will help the brewer optimize process efficiencies and develop distinctive high-quality beers. EDITION NOTICE Publisher: Project responsibility: Editor: Layout: Printer: Joh. Barth & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG Freiligrathstraße 7/9, Nuremberg Stephan Barth, Managing Partner, Nuremberg Heinrich Meier, Georgensgmuend Buero Alexander Froede, Cologne COS Druck & Verlag GmbH, Hersbruck ABOUT THE FRONT COVER New hop varieties for greater diversity in beer as proved by Barth. The beers pictured on the cover were brewed exclusively for a tasting session at the Brau Beviale 2011 fair in Nuremberg. The hops used were varieties with special flavour characteristics, known as flavour hops. Find out more about them in the Barth Report Hops 2011/2012 on page 32. Everything you ever wanted to know about hops is waiting to be discovered at the Barth-Haas Hops Academy. The more you find out about hops, the more there is to learn. The Barth-Haas Hops Academy offers a diverse range of hop-related courses and programmes of study, tailored to suit your own individual focus. 3 Explanation RANKING The ranking of the countries is based on production volume. The number on the left of the country indicates its world beer production ranking. POPULATION (POP): Million inhabitants. GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT (GNP): in billion US-dollars. PRODUCTION (PROD): Production of beer in million hectolitres. PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION (PCC): Beer in litres. MARKET SHARE (MS): Market share based on the breweries domestic sales. The breweries are mentioned in the national ranking either if their market share is higher than 10 % with a minimum volume of 1 million hl or if they appear in the top 40 brewery list having more than 5 % market share in the respective country. As the trade of beer across national borders is insignificant in most countries, the market share in the domestic market is synonomous with the total market share with the exception of the following countries: Countries with more export than import: Production EXP - IMP Saldo MS basis PROD+IMP-EXP Germany Netherlands Belgium Countries with more import than export: Production EXP - IMP Saldo MS basis PROD+IMP-EXP USA UK Spain France Italy FINANCIAL PARTICIPATION If the group behind the domestic brewery is written in capital letters it means the group has a participation over 50 %. If it is written in lower case it means the group has a participation below 50 %. 12 More about hops THE BARTH-HAAS GRANTS YOUR HOPS RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY Since 2007 the Barth-Haas Group has awarded five grants of 2,000 EUR each year to support research ideas that focus on hops and hop products in brewing. Our grants have become so successful that hop research is now experiencing a revival. The ideas funded so far reveal just the tip of the iceberg concerning the unknown properties of hops. The previously funded research projects looked into hop derived anti-foams dry hopping techniques hop aroma utilisation during brewing the role of hops in flavour stability instrumental bitterness detection hops and gushing hop derived flavour active compounds THE HOP AROMA COMPENDIUM A WHOLE NEW EXPERIENCE OF HOPS! Just discover the Hop Aroma Compendium, a unique description of the aromas of 48 hop varieties, constituting a further element in Barth-Haas s projects designed to increase hop expertise in the brewing industry and in other sectors. A purely technical analysis does not do justice to the hops and is of only little help to the brewer when it comes to developing new recipes. Find out more about the Hop Aroma Compendium on While these research projects have answered many questions, as is often the case in the world of science, they have also generated many more interesting questions at the same time. To meet with the increasing number of applications we have decided this year to support six research ideas with our grants. The 2012 winners are listed below. 14 Merger and acquisition highlights MERGER AND ACQUISITION HIGHLIGHTS AMONG THE 40 LARGEST BREWING GROUPS WORLDWIDE 2011 saw quite an increase in M&A activity. The biggest deal was SABMiller s acquisition of Foster s beer business in Australia. Kirin snatched up Schincariol giving it an entry into the very lucrative Brazilian beer market. Another area of activity was Africa where Diageo and Heineken made acquisitions in Ethopia in the privatization of the stateowned breweries Bedele, Harar and Meta Abo. Heineken also expanded its footprint in Nigeria acquiring SONA Group at the beginning of the year. Further consolidation was on the way in Eastern Europe where SABMiller and EFES decided to join forces with SABMiller merging its Russian and Ukrainian breweries into EFES in exchange for a 24 % equity stake in the Anadolu EFES Group. With global beer output growing moderately (approx. 3.3 % vs. 2010) and most of this growth stemming from China organic growth is incapable of changing the ranking. Growth through acquisition remains the only means to really move up the table. For our 2011 league table we decided to no longer include Asia Pacific Breweries with the Heineken Group but to give them a separate slot on the list as the company seems to be run quite independently of Heineken. Heineken does not own a majority share in the business. The share of the 40 largest brewery groups now amounts to 81 % of the world s total beer production in Don t Gamble with Product Quality...
