POPULATION (POP): Million inhabitants. GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT (GNP): In billion US-dollars. PRODUCTION (PROD): Production of beer in million of hectolitres. PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION (PCC): Beer in litres. MARKET SHARE (MS): Market share based on the mentioned breweries domestic sales. The breweries are mentioned in the national ranking either if their market share is superior to 10 % with a minimum volume of 1 million hl or if they appear in the top 40 brewery list having more than 5 % market share in the respective country. FINANCIAL PARTICIPATION If the group behind the domestic brewery is written in capital letters it means it has a participation over 50 %. If it is written in small characters it means it has a participation below 50 %. 12 Barth-Haas grants The Barth-Haas grants your hops research opportunity Since 2007 the Barth-Haas Group confers five grants of 2000 each year to support research ideas that focus on hops and hop products in brewing. Our grants have become so successful that Hop research is now experiencing renewed interest. The hitherto 15 funded ideas revealed just the tip of the iceberg on unknown properties of hops. The previously funded research projects looked into e.g. hop derived antifoams the methodology of olfactory and gustatory perceptions in beer hop aroma utilisation during brewing flavour stability by using advanced hop products instrumental bitterness detection degradation products of iso-alpha acids anti-radical behaviour of hop compounds More about hops Our Hop Science Newsletter informs about the newest research activities and new findings to provide the readers with all kind of hop related information. If you would like to receive the Hop Science Newsletter once a month free of charge please write to christina.schoenberger@johbarth.de All these research projects answered a lot of questions but as it is natural in science in the same time produced a lot more questions. To meet with the increasing number of applications each year we decided this year to support eight research ideas with our grants. The 2010 winners are listed on page 14. The most recent M&A activity involved the take-over of FEMSA s beer division by Heineken. Further deals are expected by industry pundits. And some deals didn t happen: the Kirin-Suntory merger was called off after many months of negotiations. The spinoff of ABI s Eastern European breweries, which resulted in the formation of Starbev, brings a new player to the league table with approx. 15 million hl of annual beer production.
