2 1989. Belgium. Boy on bike. (Ok, make that a young man of 32). As our aspiring young home brewer rides his mountain bike with "fat tires" through European villages famous for beer, New Belgium Brewing Company was but a glimmer in his eye. Or basement. For Jeff Lebesch would return to Fort Collins with a handful of ingredients and an imagination full of recipes. And then there was beer. Jeff's first two basement-brewed creations? A brown dubbel with earthy undertones named Abbey and a remarkably well-balanced amber he named Fat Tire. To say the rest was history would be to overlook his wife's involvement. Kim Jordan was New Belgium's first bottler, sales rep, distributor, marketer and financial planner. A Leader in Sustainable Practices New Belgium Brewing Company, makers of Fat Tire Amber Ale and a host of Belgian inspired beers, began operations in a tiny Fort Collins basement in Today, the third largest craft brewer in the U.S., New Belgium produces several beers, including; Fat Tire Amber Ale, Sunshine Wheat, Blue Paddle Pilsner, 1554 Black Ale, Abbey, and Trippel, as well as a host of seasonal releases. In addition to producing world-class beers, New Belgium takes pride in being a responsible corporate role model with progressive programs such as employee ownership, open book management and a commitment to environmental stewardship. New Belgium has a 99% diversion rate meaning that 99% of all materials we handle are recycled, recovered or reused (see the figure below). 4 Beer Servers This is where it gets fast and furious. We need a strong volunteer base here in the form of pourers and servers, and folks that can keep a line moving! Volunteers will be responsible for learning to pour beer well to minimize waste and money. Not all Beer Service volunteers need to be TIPS trained. However, some will be and will need to check for wristbands, and scan the crowd for intoxicated guests. Volunteers will not be changing any kegs, but will be responsible for informing NBB staff when that needs to be done. Beer Gypsies The Beer gypsies will be given trays that have a shoulder strap (think 40 s cigar girls) around their shoulders and hold approximately a dozen 3 oz samples of beer. They will roam the event with a specific flavor of beer checking for wristbands and taking tokens. Due to the autonomy of this position, ALL beer gypsies will be TIPS trained. The position will be very busy for the first hour and a half, and again during the beermission when we stop the film and encourage people to continue sampling. ID Check: Wristbands & Beer Tokens These folks are responsible for making sure every single person served at the event is of legal drinking age. ID checkers approve the guest s valid Identification card (Drivers license, State ID, Passport, Military ID, or Green Card), and assuming that ID is valid, current, and the holder is in fact 21 years of age, they give the guest a wristband to mark their ability to drink, and send them to the beer token booth. The volunteers selling tokens and handling main cash flow, as well as distributing passports and giving a quick explanation about the flow of the event.

5 Fun and Games We ll have a couple different games at the event all of which will need 1-2 people explaining and playing these games with people attending the event. These folks should be outgoing and ready to reel people in and show them some fun! These games revolve around sensory, learning and taking about raw materials, and romancing a specific beers! These positions will include serving beer separate from the beer area so they must be TIPS trained. Mystery Beer Taste Test This is the place that people can show just how much they know about our beer! Lips of Faith beers were born from a New Belgium coworker contest like our taste test. It starts with a New Belgium employee mixing 3 different beers, and ends when someone can guess which 3 beers were mixed and what percentage of each beer is in the concoction. Guests will do just that at this tent. This volunteer s job is there to pour samples (for a token, of course) of the pre-made mystery beer, and show folks where to drop their ballot. The winner of this contest gets a big high five and some serious bragging rights. Merchandise / Volunteer Gift Tent It s at this tent that folks can purchase different types of merchandise and pick up a few freebies.
