They were great teas (Black Currant, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, Gunpowder, Jasmine, and Orange Pekoe) and very different from what was then generally available. Over the next decades the company expanded with more Harneys coming on board. We grew in size and tasted more teas and grew excited about bringing them to our customers. As we became more adventurous, we traveled the tea lands around the world and discovered new flavors, new sensations, new teas to love. Now more than 30 years later, travel is an integral part of our work. Harney family members make many journeys each year to be sure that the teas we offer are consistently of the highest quality and to bring to your attention unique tea experiences. A rating of 0 means that the tea has none of that characteristic and a rating of 5 indicates that it is a primary characteristic. Briskness refers to the tea s ability to make your mouth pucker, also known as astringency. Body refers to whether or not a tea feels thick in the mouth, such as Assam, or light such as a white tea. 3 Explore THE TEA ROADS B R IG IT T E H A R NEY From the early years in John's basement, our teabags steep in nearly 50 countries and all 7 continents! Last year, Brigitte visited the tea gardens of India. This spring, she traveled to VENICE to check in on our Italian distribution before returning to France, where our tea is widely enjoyed, especially in her hometown of PARIS. Just as we go to print, Brigitte and Michael are hosting a tea tour with customers in LONDON. EMERIC HARNEY LONDON In searching for new and unique teas, Emeric traveled first to KOLKATA to meet with some of the largest tea makers in the world (Williamson Magers.) They hosted him on one of their north bank estates in ASSAM, near the Chinese border. NEPAL was the true gem of this year's trip, where he began what we hope to be a long lasting relationship with a fantastic source for quality tea. Every year he leads our sales teams to trade shows from NEW YORK to CALIFORNIA. This year, he traveled with tea luminary and long time family friend, James Norwood Pratt, to Catspring, TEXAS, where we source Yaupon, which is part of our new caffeinated blend: American Buzz. 4 ALEX HARNEY Just before the birth of his first child, Korabelle, Alex traveled to KORAKUNDAH (see any resemblance?) for his third trip to this estate. Alex has been traveling to India for nearly six years and has developed a strong relationship with the Korakundah estate. MIKE HARNEY Each year, Mike travels with long time family friend and tea broker, Marcus Wulf, along with our purchaser, Elvira Cardenas. Starting in SHANGHAI, they made their way to ZHEJIANG, where we buy nearly all of our Chinese green teas, then to HUNAN, a province with a treasure trove of great black teas. On the way back, the crew toured some of the high mountains in TAIWAN, tasting some prized oolongs to bring back. 5

4 Tea Types WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Part of what makes tea so interesting is its extraordinary variety, offering seven distinctly different types of tea. You ll find them all throughout this catalog and we urge you to try a variety of tea that s new to you. Flavored Tea Exclusive blends use tea with added flavors, dried fruit and flowers. Black Tea Mellow Chinese, to full-bodied Indian. Sometimes served with milk and sugar. White Tea Barely processed, air-dried, silver or white tea buds. A light, sweet brew. Herbal Tea Soothing or stimulating infusions from flowers, seeds and spices. Green Tea Tea leaves fixed green that highlight the vegetal essence of tea. Matcha Tea Vital, powdered green tea, energizing with high antioxidants. How to Make GREAT TEA! Quality of the tea Harney & Sons offers the highest quality tea leaves you can steep, We select only hand-picked, full leaf teas from the finest tea gardens and estates. Like fine wines, styles of tea also vary by each tea estate and garden, depending on geography, climate and farming practices. A good pot of tea cannot be made from inferior tea. You need great tea! Fresh, pure water If need be, water should be filtered. Hard water, sulphurous water or chlorinated water will affect the taste of your tea. Condition and freshness Harney Tea should be stored in sealed containers away from light in a cool place. Because tea picks up flavors and odors from foods around it, keep coffee and spices away from your tea. It s important to properly rotate your teas on your shelf or in your drawer. Put the oldest at the front (marking it with the date in ) and use it first. When you buy the best tea, you should enjoy it at its best. THE ART OF THE PERFECT BREW HOW TO MAKE A TEA LATTÉ Enjoy a tea latté at home with steamed milk, or heat your milk and whisk to achieve a delicious foamy top. Brewing the perfect cup Heat your pot by filling it with boiling water to raise the temperature of the pot. Recycle the water. Use one teaspoon, teabag or tea sachet for each cup of tea desired. Follow the steeping instructions for each tea, as each has their own required time and temperature. Once the steeping time is reached, remove tea, teabag or sachet to achieve the perfect strength. A timer will help you make it spot on. Enjoy.
