1 A.P. MOLLER REPORTE Moller-Maersk DE COMERCIO DE MEXICO PRIMER TRIMESTRE 2017 Trade Report 3Q 2017 BRAZIL Brazil Delivers Best Quarterly Trade Performance Since 2014 Nation Recovering Faster Than Expected As Trade Expands 10.2% In Best Christmas Expected Since 2014
2 2 The pace of Brazil s economic recovery is moving faster than expected as retailers prepare for what is likely to be the strongest Christmas sales performance for the country since the economic crisis began in 2015 after the nation delivered its best quarterly trade performance since Indeed, retailers are optimistic amid improving consumption following four quarters of consistent double-digit imports growth with third-quarter imports rising a healthy 14.3% versus 16.8% in the second quarter. Expectations are building up after finished manufacturing goods, which are largely consumer products, soared 44% in the third quarter year on year and significantly outperformed every other segment on the imports side. On top of this, imports into Manaus, which primarily assembles electronic products for consumers predominantly in the wealthiest regions of the southeast and south, saw third-quarter imports jump 35% year on year. In September alone, imports into Manaus were up 25% on the same period a year earlier following a gain of 40% in August. The strong third-quarter imports result combined with exports growth of 6.9% contributed to the best quarterly performance for Brazilian trade in the last three years with total imports and exports growing a very healthy 10.2% in the third quarter. These levels are akin to the type of results seen from a handful of countries around the world like Mexico, however, this robust Brazilian result is still on top of a low base of comparison when trade declined 2.3% in the third quarter of Second-Quarter Market Growth Total Imports and Exports These double-digit performances for consumers goods and imports into Manaus are exactly the levels of growth you would expect for a strong Christmas in Brazil but we have to remember that this is seasonal and total import and export volumes for the third quarter are still 9% below the same level in 2014, the year before the economic crisis began, so we still have some way to go before maritime trade truly recovers, says Antonio Dominguez, Managing Director for the East Coast South America cluster covering Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. That said, what is very encouraging is that retailers are for the first time doing much more than just restocking their shelves, they are increasing their stocks ahead of Christmas, this represents a stark difference to what happened last year when restocking was the order of the day, he adds. Traditionally, retailers order goods at the end of the second quarter or early third so that products are ready on the shelves by October ahead of Black Friday and Christmas. * Datamar supplies all data exclusively to Maersk Line
3 3 Total Exports Reefer Exports SEGMENT Var. % T2 T3 T4 T1 T2 T3 Drinks Meat Poulty Fruit, vegetables, plants Other meat Pork FORECAST Maersk Line sees imports and exports rising respectively 14% and 1.5% in 2017, totalling 7% for the year. Exports Dry and refrigerated (reefer) exports picked up thanks to strong market growth in the third quarter with total exports increasing 6.9% in the third quarter versus a decline of 2.2% in the second quarter. Dry exports increased 6.6% and reefer exports grew 7.4% - reverting declines for both segments in the second quarter. The strong market growth in exports is putting a lot of pressure on shipping lines and this has prompted Maersk Line to change the way it serves clients in the reefer market in the Northeast of Brazil, for example, whilst making available more reefer containers to customers across the country and rolling out Remote Container Management to all clients in Brazil allowing them to track, maintain fresh and know what is happening to their goods during the whole journey, says Nestor Amador, Commercial Director for Maersk Line East Coast South America. REEFER EXPORTS: Beef Surges, Pecem Service Launch In the same way consumer goods drove imports higher, a surge in demand for beef led to strong performances to Asia and Europe. Beef reefer exports jumped 37% in the third-quarter, marking a rebound following a slowdown in the second. However, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay are increasing beef exports too, putting pressure on space available for Brazilian producers too. Exports are starting to do better but there is more demand than the whole shipping industry is able to accommodate at this point. For beef, there is going to be more pressure as other southern cone nations are competing to increase their market share too, says Joao Momesso, Trade and Marketing Director for Maersk Line East Coast South America. For refrigerated goods, Europe and Asia are improving again as demand for beef grows with volumes increasing to the Netherlands and Malaysia.
4 4 Pecem is growing rapidly after APM Terminals invested USD22 million in two new ship-toshore cranes. We are heading for a historical record at Pecem with 16% growth in the first nine months of the year. September was the best month ever after handling 24,260 TEUs, says Ricardo Arten, Managing Director of APM Terminals Brazil. DRY EXPORTS In terms of dry exports, Africa stood out thanks to high demand for sugar, significantly offsetting declines for the commodity into other regions around the world. Brazilian producers are primarily serving the biggest and the relatively more stable economies in Africa from Nigeria to South Africa. Meanwhile, other regions benefitted as the soy and corn harvests got under way, leading to increases of 94% and 81% in the third quarter respectively and contributing to the much-better-than-expected overall third-quarter exports result. NEW SERVICE TO EUROPE For fruit producers, Maersk Line changed its trade configuration between producers in the Northeast of Brazil and Europe during the harvest. For the first time, Maersk Line established a direct service between APM Terminals Pecem in Northeastern state Ceara and key European ports in Spain, Netherlands and UK to meet growing demand from local fruit producers. The world s largest shipping line is bringing four smaller 1,800 TEU ships. The four ships, which can carry up to 400 refrigerated containers each and will stop at Algeciras, Rotterdam and Tilbury near London, will replace a much larger 8,800 TEU SAMMAX (South American Max) ship currently servicing the East Coast South America route. In short, we have substituted one SAMMAX ship with four smaller ships. This way, we up the frequency of ships servicing clients but the capacity in terms of volumes remains the same. This required an investment on our side to make this happen but we think the producers in the Northeast are much better served for it, says Momesso. The service is to meet demand between November and February when the harvest ends. The European markets account for 65% of fruits exports from Pecém, so this dedicated service enables a faster connection and more availability to producers, ensuring cargo remains fresh for final consumers, says Daniel Rose, Managing Director of APM Terminals Pecem. Key fruits for export in the region include melons, mangoes, grapes, limes and watermelons. 5 5 REGIONAL BREAKDOWN Total Imports The Northeast has had a less consistent performance that the rest of the country, lagging other regions. The region is yet to recover economically in the same way as the South, Southeast and North. The harvest should help inject some momentum back into the region in the coming quarters.
