4 Page 40 Lincoln County STROUD The City of Stroud is rich in history. Buildings constructed prior to statehood are still occupied. The Stroud Public Library is in an Art Deco structure built in 1929 by what is now known as Southwestern Bell. It has been renovated to house the library collection as well as other historic documents, photographs, and quilts. The heart of Oklahoma s burgeoning wine industry is Lincoln County. There are more than 30 vineyards within 30 miles of Stroud. Stableridge Winery is located on Route 66 in an old Catholic church at the western edge of town. The Grape Junction, located at the junction of 66 and Oklahoma 99, and Territory Cellars Winery and Vineyard, located on Oklahoma 99 north of Route 66, opened in Opportunities for recreation abound in the area. Stroud Lake is just a few minutes from town and offers fishing and boating on over 621 surface acres as well as camping and swimming from a white sand beach. Stroud has a nine-hole public golf course just two miles north of town. On Route 66 in the heart of Stroud is the historic Rock Café, built in 1939 and owned by Dawn Welch, who served as the inspiration for the character Sally Carrera in the 2006 Pixar film Cars. Stroud hosts several festivals and events during the year, including a wine festival on the second Saturday in June; a fireworks display for the Fourth of July; a brick and rolling pin throw on the second Saturday in July; a chili cookoff on the last Saturday in October; and a Christmas parade on the first Saturday in December. * Stroud Chamber, 216 W. (918) DAVENPORT Located midway between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Davenport is a bustling little town where travelers can still drive on original Portland cement pavement. From the Y at Seventh and Broadway, travelers can take a short side trip onto Davenport s brick-paved Broadway, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Don t miss the historic marker in front of the post office or the 32-foot-high mural on the south side of the 1905 Farmers Bank Building. Four miles northeast of town, on the original dirt alignment of 66, is a concrete obelisk marking the old Ozark Trail. 5 CHANDLER Chandler is one of two Oklahoma cities settled by its own land run. The community was only 6 years old when a tornado ripped through it in Twelve of the surviving buildings are now on the National Register of Historic Places. A large mural depicting Chandler s history decorates a wall near the southwest end of town, and authentic ghost signs are visible on the sides of brick buildings. Local volunteers led a successful effort to raise money to restore the huge WPA-era native stone National Guard Armory, which has been converted to a museum and visitors center that houses the Oklahoma Route 66 Association headquarters and the Route 66 Interpretive Center. Warwick is home to the Seaba Engine Rebuilding garage, which opened in The building was adapted for use as an antique store for several years. New owners have converted it to a motorcycle museum, which opened in Children will enjoy seeing the museum s collection, which includes a coin-operated ride-on motorcycle toy and several unusual motorcycles. 9 WELLSTON Highway 66B, which takes travelers through downtown Wellston, was the original alignment of Route 66 in this area until 1933, when it was bypassed by the current alignment. At the time, the citizens of Wellston sued the highway department to keep Route 66 and its traffic in their downtown. Arcadia Police officers take speeding very seriously, so pay attention to the signs as you come into town.

10 Page 46 Oklahoma County Signage General Information State Highway 66 signs are used east of Edmond and from the I-44 interchange to Bethany. Follow street names everywhere else. Most of the Historic 66 markers in Oklahoma County are now missing. Key places that are NOT marked are the westbound jog from Broadway to Memorial, then under Highway 77 over to Kelley; 23 rd and Lincoln; westbound 23 rd and May; and the May/SH 66/39 th Expressway/I-44 interchange. Street names of Route 66 in towns (east to west) Road Facts In 1954, 66 was shunted over to what is now the I-35 corridor, bypassing Edmond. Although there are several alternate alignments through Oklahoma City, we have shown only two. Please consult Jim Ross Oklahoma Route 66 for the other alignments. If you are westbound, as you leave Bethany, consider taking the older route around Lake Overholser. And no matter which direction you are traveling, try to take the older alignment loop just east of Arcadia. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
