11 Artworks by - Sophia Louise Conley Sophia Conley is an Interior Designer and Conceptual artist. Her work covers various mediums such as painting, computer generated art, installation and sculpture. Each piece within Wasabi represents one of the five Japanese elements: Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Void. Through her most recent addition to the Tatami dining room, Sophia, inspired by the 16th Century Japanese Kano School of painting, represents each of the Japanese elements using monochrome inks, gold leaf and acrylic. Below is a description of the work. Definitions; Fractal: // a term coined by famous mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot in the mid 19 th century to describe an object or geometry that displays self-similarity on all scales whether microscopic or as a whole it looks the same. ie a tree/branch/leaf Japanese 5 Elements: // Chi EARTH = solid objects of the world, Ka FIRE = energetic forces moving things in this world, Fu WIND = represents things that grow, expand and enjoy freedom of movement, Sui WATER = fluid flowing formless, Ku VOID = sky or heaven, the unknown. These paintings aim to illustrate the similarities of nature s geometry on many levels. For example, how the view of a coastline or river system from space shares a striking likeness to a leaf structure, or the similarity of fan coral to a towering tree. Most of our natural world is made of fractals whether it be cloud forms, plants, trees, ocean waves, rivers, even the way our cities organically grow and spread. Just as nature is made up of fractals, so to are our bodies. Our lungs are like branches, the unique patterns of our fingerprints resemble a contour map of mountain ranges. Even our optic nerves and nervous system share the same geometry to that of a plant root or river system. Contemplating the beautiful similarities in nature is a humbling way to remind ourselves that we are all intrinsically connected. Nothing in Nature is random. A thing appears random only through the incompleteness of our knowledge. (Benedict Spinoza 17 th Century Dutch Philosopher).
