2 PEOPLE Family life Being a good family member gets you far in Japan. A person s actions reflect on the family, so it s very important to behave well. It used to be improper for women to have a job, but now more than 50% do. Divorce and single parenthood are rare, and you generally have less than 3 kids. Affection and spending time together is less important than it is in America.! Education Children in Japan go to school 6 days a week to learn history, math and science. Students must wear uniforms to school, and learn how to write in kanji. There are thousands of different kanji that students learn to read and write. But students still learn fast, because Japan boasts the world s highest literacy rate. Maybe because its mandatory for students to learn Juku after school, to strengthen math and writing. Children going to school Entertainment Sports Baseball is very popular in Japan. It has become so popular that people play major league in the United States. Japan s national sport is Sumo Wrestling. This is when men of great skill and an enormous body try to knock each other out of the ring. Other sports Japanese like to do are martial arts, soccer, volleyball, tennis, skiing and jogging. The Cast of Kabuki In Japan, people enjoy listening to symphonic music and watching ballet. Older people like to watch puppet theater and stylized drama, while younger kids like the popular pop music. Kabuki, which blends dance, music, and acting, is known for its spectacular set and costumes. Gaguku is famous too, for being one of the oldest types of music. [1]

3 CULTURE Traditions New Years Day is one of the most important holidays. It starts on New Years Eve and goes through January 3. Japanese eat mochi and clean their houses to prepare for this holiday. Obon is celebrated too. From August 13-16, people gather at temples, dress up, sing, dance, pay respects to dead ancestors and eat special food. This is a buddhist holiday, but everyone can enjoy it. Clothing In Japan, people act similar to the crowd, so people tend to wear what the crowd wears. Styles change a lot, especially with the younger generations. Businessmen wear suits and ties, while women wear dresses and slacks. Traditional clothing might include the kimono, a long robe with long sleeves wrapped with a special sash. This is worn by men and women, but common by women. Since this is a really warm garment, a Yukata has lighter fabric, and worn in the summer. A woman in a Yukata Japanese New Year Food In Japan, it s normal to have rice at every meal...even breakfast! Because Japan is an island, they catch a lot of fish. This makes eating fish a part of your daily routine too. In an average household, miso soup, pickled vegetables, rice, seaweed and noodles would be stocked in your kitchen. Religion 84% of the people in Japan practice Shinto and Buddhism. Shinto is the most important and ancient, while Buddhism began in India and came to Japan in the 6th century a.d.. Buddhism is split into Zen and True Pure Land. Zen teaches the use of meditation, while True Pure Land teaches you that you can be saved by prayers. [2]

4 ECONOMY Industry! Japan has one of the biggest economies in the world which would include electronics we haven t even heard about yet. Have you ever seen a Toyota or Nissan van or Suzuki jeep? Well, Japan s where it probably came from. Japan has many high tech industries. Scientists are often experimenting with new technologies. Japan s Money System As you might know Japan s money is called yen. The coin is based on the name yu ge. 100 yen isn t even a U.S. dollar. So if you go to Japan bring over $1200 with you, because that will get you over 100,000 yen. And you can almost buy a house with that much yen. 5 History Type to enter text Above are some pictures from some wars. The war of WWII began on September 1, 1939, with the invasion of Poland by Germany and Slovakia, and the declaration of war on Germany by France and most of the countries of the British Empire and Commonwealth. Germany set out to organize a big empire in Europe. Late 1939 to early 1941, a series of treaties, Germany overcame much of continental Europe, Nazi- Soviet agreements, the Soviet Union occupied territories its six European neighbors. After the bombing of pearl harbor ( by Japan ), the U.S.A dropped a nucleure bomb on Hiroshima Japan. The battle was on, starting with a victory for the U.S.A on Iwo Jima, ( off the coast of Japan ) whitch started when the U.S.A compleatly bombed the island for a compleat three days. The war ended when the U.S.A Planted the flag on the highest mountain on the island of Iwo Jima. Below is a picture of a Japan fighter pilot flying over the seas. Landforms and water forms include: Mount Fuji: A dormant volcano that is the highest point in Japan at 12, 388 ft.

It is more tropical near the southern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan also usually has warm, humid summers.

It is more tropical near the southern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. Japan also usually has warm, humid summers. And whatever season it is in Japan, the west side is colder than the east side of Japan. Natural Resources Japan has one of the biggest economies in the world, but has very few natural resources. Fish is considered one because they are plentiful. Wood and lumber are resources because there is demand for wood and lumber products. Did you know Japan has 28, 720 species of insects? Wildlife There are 188 types of wild mammals. Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu feature: Japanese serow, giant flying squirrel, Japanese bear, wild boar, and the Japanese macaque. Hokkaido: Ezo brown bear, sable, striped squirrel, and Sakhalian red fox Japan has 665 species of birds.

Japan GOVERNMENT Japan is run on a constitutional monarchy. The people make the laws. There is a government system known as the Diet. The Diet makes up Japan s legislative branch.

The Diet is made out of the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors. 480 people go to the House of Representatives and 242 go to the House of Councilors. More than one hundred members of the Diet are second or third generation. You must be 20 years old to vote for someone in Japan. Japan has an emperor and a prime minister. Japan s current emperor, Emperor Akihito, is head of state. However, he has no governing power. Prime Minister Naoto Kan, is the head of government and has some governing power. The prime minister and his cabinet are part of the executive branch. Japan has a couple of government buildings. On the picture below in the left is the Imperial Palace, where the emperor lives while he has a term. On the right, is the Diet of Japan, where the Diet meets up and discusses different laws.
